To not really get why people don’t like clothes?

keeponwishing · 21/11/2025 18:04

I’m not talking about specifically liking fashion or following certain trends.

I mean in general, clothes are a personal choice. They can express who you are, there’s do much choice out there. Why people say they don’t care what they wear?

I love clothes and accessories and shopping, but I suppose it's an interest, same as anything else. People enjoy different things.

keeponwishing · 21/11/2025 18:44

Gosh everyone is different? Never heard that before.

Of course there’s different ways to express your personality. You’re clearly not understanding that if I walked by you and the street I’d know nothing about you apart from a judgment based ln how you decide to present yourself?

No one who doesn’t know me would walk by me and think … wow she’s got a great heart and good sense of humour and the way she expresses her art in her home is something to be admired.

You keep accusing other posters of not "getting it". They do get it. You're coming over as shallow as a puddle and probably (hopefully) very young.

You’re clearly not understanding that if I walked by you and the street I’d know nothing about you apart from a judgment based ln how you decide to present yourself?

Why would anyone give a Castlemaine 4X what some rando walking past them on the street thinks of how they look, far less dress to try to impress them? Not everyone treats every minute of the day like they're in a job interview.

keeponwishing · 21/11/2025 19:01

It’s not about their assumptions. It’s you saying here I am and this is my statement.

It absolutely is about assumptions. If I dress in a designer suit or a flowing skirt or a body con dress certain people will make assumptions into what my personality is. I don't need to make any statements, I need to be able to move freely to persuade stubborn animals into a nice heated barn.

Oh, we understand, we just don't give a shit.

Perfectly put.

As good a reason to go out dressed in bin liner as I've ever heard.

I'd be totally into that too 😀

QueenClinomania · 21/11/2025 19:12

Why does it matter what people who walk past you in the street think about you? Or if they even think about you at all?
Im not being snarky. Its a genuine question.

My taste in clothes is 'fit me'. I don't dress to give a message about me to strangers. Even if I gave a shit what they think (i dont), I'm fairly sure people who pass me don't give a shit about me or what I may or may not be like. Their minds will be full of their own stuff, I just dont think im going to find a space in there to plonk myself down and convey my essence through fabric. People are just not important to the strangers around them.

CornedBeef451 · 21/11/2025 19:14

I don’t feel the need to express myself in that way. Shopping is so boring and busy and brightly lit, I hate it.

Redwaterr · 21/11/2025 19:17

I would say that dressing practically with little concern for style is expressing yourself if that's what you value.

We are all different.

Midgetgemsplease · 21/11/2025 19:21

I would love nice clothes but just can't afford them. I don't buy things often and if I do I only generally buy one thing so nothing looks like a nicely put together outfit

It’s not about strangers in the street though. I couldn’t give a fuck what someone I’m never going to see again might think of me.

The way you dress can totally give off assumptions about who you are, what your job is, your social status etc. Generally everyone has an idea of who they are in their head and like to mirror that in how they outwardly present. Someone might want to dress in a conservative manner to look respectable for example if they were going to a job interview. Dressing smartly is therefore a way of “giving a message”.

amber763 · 21/11/2025 19:22

I don't want to express myself through clothes and i don't care one bit what people think about me or what im wearing.

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 21/11/2025 19:24

InterestedDad37 · 21/11/2025 18:12

I've always been totally into clothes! What I wear is really important to me, and I absolutely judge pretty much everyone on what they choose to put on 😂
If you don't care, or are unimaginative in your choice of clothes, or dull or scruffy, we probably won't get on 😂

Works for me.

i don't get on with people that are even more shallow than a puddle.

Echobelly · 21/11/2025 19:25

Because some people just aren't that bothered. Clothes are just something that keep them warm or cool and they don't devote any time to think about it.

I'm not one of those people, but I imagine it's like me and cars - a lot of people feel their choice of car says a lot about them and always want to drive something new-ish that looks good and has cachet. I just want a car that gets me from A to B so I don't care.

HeddaGarbled · 21/11/2025 19:26

Someone dressing as a goth may be viewed as sometimes unconventional but it’s that person expressing themselves

That’s exactly what I mean: all those well-behaved, privileged, sixth form girls thinking other people will think they’re edgy because they wear black. It’s a costume, designed to hide their true selves.

Except the op is clearly talking about strangers on the street.

Bananaandmangosmoothie · 21/11/2025 19:27

I just don’t find them interesting at all. I would happily wear the same jeans and jumper every day if I could!

I don't care what a stranger walking past me thinks about me though. I only care about what people close to me think, and they know who I am through spending time with me and getting to know me.

When I'm out and about I only care about being comfortable, the correct temperature, and not being arrested for indecency. I pick my clothes to satisfy those requirements only.

A random strangers idle thoughts about me have no tangible effect on my life and I refuse to waste money and comfort on something so worthless.

NovemberRedHolly · 21/11/2025 19:28

They’ve probably got more important things to think about.

Konstantine8364 · 21/11/2025 19:28

Please go shopping as me and still say you love clothes 🤣 I'm 5'2 with 32FF boobs and hold weight on my middle. Im probably a size 11 rather than a 10 or 12 which doesnt help! Some tops/dresses look really slutty, others make me look the size of a house. Maybe 1 in 20 or 30 I look reasonable in. Im not overweight, just top end of normal BMI. I have to chose the clothes I look ok, rather than what I really like. If you're 5'6 and a size 10 and in proportion, shopping and clothes are probably wonderful. But I have always hated shopping and usually have a cry in the car afterwards when I have to go and buy something. As it's so demoralising trying on outfit after outfit to just look shit.

BootMaker · 21/11/2025 19:30

I love clothes, adore them, I have a mother who also loves and adores clothes, I started reading Vogue as a child and have made many pilgrimages in my life that are clothes-related.

Think about them all the time, spend many a happy hour planning outfits and searching for the perfect 'thing'.

I love seeing similarly interested people out and about, few things make me happier than seeing someone with a very definite style who's killing it.

But, do you know what? I understand very well that the vast majority of people don't share my interest and see clothes as a utilitarian object.

I don't judge them. Why would I? I'm far too busy thinking about my own wardrobe.

arcticpandas · 21/11/2025 19:31

keeponwishing · 21/11/2025 19:01

It’s not about their assumptions. It’s you saying here I am and this is my statement.

"Here I am and this is my statement". That sounds like middle school to me. I would never think of clothing as a statement. But I don't like clothes. Have always found them boring whereas my DH loves shopping. Then he's in sales so has to look smart whereas I'm a sahm so luckily I don't have to try for anything else than clean and proper.

Yeah. You’re not getting my point so

We get your point, we just don’t agree with you. It happens.

Huntrix · 21/11/2025 19:31

I did the "expressing myself" thing in my teens and twenties as an "alternative" person, but I stopped caring decades ago. I live in skinny jeans and big hoodies like the millennial that I am and it's great. I don't feel the need to make anyone think anything of me. I also don't care what others wear because it's just not that interesting to me. I have friends who are very into their clothes and I do compliment them on their accessories etc. occasionally if I notice them because I like the people and I know they will be pleased with someone noticing, but I'm generally just not that fussed about appearances.

It's great if people have found stuff that they enjoy and their clothes bring them pleasure, though. 🙂

Personally I don't pay attention to what someone is wearing. What an odd thing to notice enough to judge.

Nobody is looking at you dude.
