Should people who voted for Brexit be allowed to apply for an Irish Passport?

I have two cousins who were born and raised in England who have an Irish father and an English mother. Both my cousins voted for Brexit and are now applying for Irish passports. I’m Irish and living in Ireland and this makes me absolutely furious. They are both women in their 50s who never wanted an Irish passport until now. They have no interest whatsoever in Irish history and anything related to Ireland. They’re not even embarrassed that they voted for Brexit and see an Irish passport as a way of skipping queues at the airport. It seems so unfair on those who voted to remain but don’t have an Irish parent/grandparent so can’t apply for an Irish passport.

Just like Farage, they make travel and living abroad hard for everyone else while enjoying dual nationality. Personally, I think everyone who voted for Brexit should have their heads paraded on sticks. Small-minded, deluded sheep have ruined our country for generations.

Abhannmor · 18/11/2025 19:53

Alternatively , they could be issued a special new Brexit Irish passport. Only valid for travel to places that voted Leave. Like Lincolnshire or Benidorm. I will shortly be producing them with my aptly named John Bull Printing Set.

Does it actually make travelling any easier though?

I have both Irish and UK passports and have travelled to various countries since Brexit. I can’t think of an airport that actually had separate queues - most were “EU and UK” or something to that effect.

If we talk purely about travel Uk citizens have limited amount fo travel days. So for a holiday few weeks a year, no difference. But if you're a pensioner that wants to stay in eu longer, then with Irish passport you don't have to worry about overstaying.

My Mum voted for Brexit and then moved abroad to an EU country later the same year! She voted based on immigration and 'not wanting to bow down to the EU'.
So she became an immigrant herself, in an EU country.

DH and I were already living in an EU country and were allowed to vote, remain of course.
As soon as the results were out, DH applied for his Irish passport and I applied for, and later received citizenship in our adopted country.

I will take that as you know very little about world politics then

I know a lot about world politics.

I'd settle for a klaxon going off as they go through passport control.

Really but you don’t think it’s a price worth paying to live in a democracy

the public have the freedom to choose

not sure what non democratic countries would be better to live in and I doubt you know of any either

It can make travel much easier . One of my sons was stuck in a corridor in Frankfurt Airport for ages and was close to missing his connecting flight. At length an announcement - ' EU passport holders come forward' . Cue groans from British and American travellers.

But it's biggest impact is on people who want to work , study or retire in the EU of course

Suednymph · 18/11/2025 20:07

I have cousins born in Ireland, moved to England as kids, tell everyone they are Irish and still voted for Brexit. I do not have any relationship with them anymore. Morons.

CraftyGin · 18/11/2025 18:51

If they are eligible, it's none of your business. Simmer down.

It’s a bit rich though isn’t it. Voting for something that imposes restrictions on people knowing that they won’t be affected

tootiredtobeinspired · 18/11/2025 20:18

I know someone that did this. Voted for Brexit then applied for her Irish passport. Brags about it shamelessly. Makes me furious. The hypocrisy is staggering. To be expected from a Brexit voter though. Completely self serving.

Greggsit · 18/11/2025 20:20

Entitlement to a passport should not be dependent on political views! That's dictatorship talk.

landlordhell · 18/11/2025 20:21

I agree. My DSis is applying but was a proud Brexit voter.

I have Irish cousins in the UK who voted for Brexit to ‘fuck the Brits’ and because they don’t like the immigrants in the UK - unbelievable…..
My sibling also voted for Brexit and then boasted about his Irish passport on FB (omitting to mention his Brexit vote).
Some people (especially in my family) are just shitty.

Farage made sure all his family have EU passports.

Referendums are a tool of dictators. Mrs Thatcher.

She wasn't wrong about everything.....

You'll notice I said 'at times'.

Im musing

This is a theoretical discussion, thats what happens when people put ideas and views out. You dont have to jump censoriously onto someone mulling over the impact of voter stupidity.

Politicians love the sale of 'democracy' because it is so easily manipulated, makes you feel empowered and in control yes?

Wrong. Because your fellow public are being manipulated and will out vote you and cause carnage. Which is exactly what has happened

Theres worse to come of course. Because the public have the right to make poor decisions. So there we are.

This.

Do you really want to live in a state where the government t keeps records of how citizen’s voted, and uses that to restrict legal rights?

I fail to see how this makes you the morally superior one.

I think you’ll find most people’s firm moral and ‘principled’ opinions are on issues that they believe will never affect them negatively.

AngelinaFibres · 18/11/2025 20:56

Berlinlover · 18/11/2025 18:59

I realise that but they’re happy to tell anyone who’ll listen that they voted for Brexit which makes it all the more infuriating!

I bet they are really enjoying pressing all your buttons.

Well if you had read my original post you would have noticed that I said the public sometimes make the wrong decisions …

we are all manipulated at some point by politicians no one is immune to it

it’s interesting how many are so angry at voters yet never towards the mp’s that actually voted to have the referendum with so little thought so little debate (basically not bothering doing their job representing their constituents best interests) had they and even with the voting being the same result it could have been very different to what it is now

people will always believe what they want to believe it’s how politics has always and will always play out

Especially political views in a different country.
