Should people who voted for Brexit be allowed to apply for an Irish Passport?

I have two cousins who were born and raised in England who have an Irish father and an English mother. Both my cousins voted for Brexit and are now applying for Irish passports. I’m Irish and living in Ireland and this makes me absolutely furious. They are both women in their 50s who never wanted an Irish passport until now. They have no interest whatsoever in Irish history and anything related to Ireland. They’re not even embarrassed that they voted for Brexit and see an Irish passport as a way of skipping queues at the airport. It seems so unfair on those who voted to remain but don’t have an Irish parent/grandparent so can’t apply for an Irish passport.

Voting against the Tories takes Tory rights away from Tory voters who disagree entirely with Labour policies.

So you then deserve to have your democratic rights stripped from you.

This is exactly and precisely the analogy you tried to make.

And it's bollocks, obviously.

You are indeed talking bollocks. There is no such thing as "Tory rights" or "Labour rights". However, there is such a thing as EU citizenship rights. I had them, I made use of them by living and working in the Netherlands, and I lost them without my consent through no fault of my own.

My mother in law has done the same. Boils my blood. The absolute gall of cutting off her grandchildren from free movement around Europe but keeping it for herself. I struggle to look at her.

Surely if she's now an Irish passport holder, then the grandchildren will now be eligible for one too now?

ScreamingBeans · 18/11/2025 23:31

This is bloody ridiculous.

If someone is entitled to citizenship, they are entitled to citizenship.

Their politics are irrelevant.

You are indeed talking bollocks, there is no such thing as EU citizenship rights when a country democratically votes to leave the EU as they are no longer in the EU. Hope this helps.

Again, spectacularly missing the point.

Before Brexshit, all UK citizens were entitled to EU passports and all the freedoms they brought. Because they were UK citizens and part of the EU.

Brexshitters voted to remove that right. And yet those getting the Irish passport after having voted Brexshit get to retain the very freedoms they sought to deny others.

How many would have applied for the Irish passport if Brexshit hadn’t happened?

Crispynoodle · 18/11/2025 23:36

I live on the island of Ireland married an Irish man have Irish children but I was born in England. I’ve been married 25 years and lived here 33 years. I really want an Irish passport more because I’ve lived here longer than there! Deffo not for the airport queues as I’m disabled and get through anyway. Voted remain I have a very curious mind and have studied Irish history. My DH still says they’ll make me drink a pint of Guinness and dance a jig before they’ll let me in!!

Have you heard of radical acceptance therapy? Screaming, shrieking and wailing about something that happened years and years ago and which you have no control over at all is not good for you.

I'm not screaming, shrieking or wailing about anything. Just swearing at the sheer idocacy and gaul of fools.

Travelfairy · 18/11/2025 23:37

No!

Rage? 😂

Dearie me.

Posting truisms on MN is now being “obsessed with shit” and having rage issues.

What cobblers.

I guess some people just don’t like the truth being pointed out to them. 😁

Well of course it's not enforceable but god it is annoying, definitely call them out on it.
I know several people who have applied for Irish passports since brexit. Think Id read there's been a huge uptake in people applying ,statistically im sure many of them also voted for brexit, infuriating!

There are currently 20,000 IE passport applications from GB every month.

You talk utter fantasist hogwash.

Nobody is shrieking.

Nobody is having having tantrums.

Posters are just pointing out facts.

Which you don’t like.

It’s really funny.

Livelovebehappy · 18/11/2025 23:51

None of your business. They voted Brexit, as did many others. You need to try and get over it. Still being this furious 5 years later must be bloody exhausting. Will it negatively affect your life by them doing this? If not, then just leave them be. 🙄

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 18/11/2025 23:51

And what are “Tory rights”?

I have never read such nonsense from one sole poster on MN!

Do continue amusing us all.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 18/11/2025 19:09

It’s annoying but if they have an Irish parent born on the island of Ireland they’re already Irish citizens and entitled to an Irish passport. Feel free to point out their hypocrisy though.

That's me, three quarters Irish but I've no interest in getting an Irish passport. Other family members are doing so though. It doesn't bother me.

Northbynorthbest · 19/11/2025 00:00

@Berlinlover You said "I’m Irish and living in Ireland and this makes me absolutely furious."
You do realise that under Irish law, your cousins are considered as Irish as you are? There's no difference. They were Irish citizens when they were born because they have an Irish parent.
And you want to deny them their Irish passport...?

ToWhitToWhoo · 19/11/2025 00:03

How would anyone know for sure whether someone voted for Brexit? The ballot is secret. I am an ardent Remainer but an even more ardent supporter of the principle of a free and secret vote, with no reward or punishment for voting one way or another.

Exactly, what are EU rights? They don't exist when your country has democratically decided to leave the EU.

Never heard such nonsense from enraged tantrum throwers 😃

I see the brexshitters are covering themselves in glory on this thread, as they always do...

I agree. They're putting on an outstanding display tonight.🙈

Oh, are you also obsessed with shit and unable to manage an adult conversation without obsessively using the word shit and calling people names because you cannot bear other people disagreeing with you democractically?

Cattenberg · 19/11/2025 00:23

Shortly after the Brexit referendum, a woman posted on MN that she'd voted for Brexit but had applied for Irish citizenship, as she had a house elsewhere in the EU and "wanted to continue to be able to live in it". She couldn't understand why some posters thought she was a hypocrite and posted the "throwing up her hands in confusion" emoji.

I still think of her as someone who was spectacularly lacking in self-awareness. I'm staggered that years after the dust has cleared, there are others who willingly admit that they Still Do Not Get It.

By the way, with the benefit of hindsight, what do you lot think of the UKIP adverts for Brexit from 2016? Do you think NHS waiting lists have reduced substantially since then? Or are you willing to admit that discouraging foreign-born NHS workers from settling in the UK might have been something of an own goal?
