Should people who voted for Brexit be allowed to apply for an Irish Passport?

I have two cousins who were born and raised in England who have an Irish father and an English mother. Both my cousins voted for Brexit and are now applying for Irish passports. I’m Irish and living in Ireland and this makes me absolutely furious. They are both women in their 50s who never wanted an Irish passport until now. They have no interest whatsoever in Irish history and anything related to Ireland. They’re not even embarrassed that they voted for Brexit and see an Irish passport as a way of skipping queues at the airport. It seems so unfair on those who voted to remain but don’t have an Irish parent/grandparent so can’t apply for an Irish passport.

Well you can’t have one law for people with one political belief and a different law for other beliefs- Ireland is a democracy so wouldn't discriminate on this basis, no.

If they are eligible, it's none of your business. Simmer down.

Well exactly.

We live in a democracy, do we not? Until you do something totally lawful and someone else disapproves, then suddenly it makes the blood boil.

How could you prove anything though ? Irish passport is one of tge most desirable in the world . My UK cousins were falling over themselves to get grandparents documents to apply for passports . The old granny clause is why we have so many Premier League footballers playing for Ireland 🇮🇪.

Or for England when they've dual citizenship of course! Much-Snarling-In-The-Marsh when ‘our’ lads are on the other team.
Imagine if Bellingham (Irish passport via father) gets any more friction with Tuchel….🙏🏻

It is even unfair on those who voted for Brexit but have no EU heritage , Irish or otherwise. I have two family members who have done this. Both very vocal about voting Leave and both acquiring Irish passports after the implications sunk in. Nauseating.

But no , rules is rules. You can't base citizenship on someone's politics. Leave that stuff to Trump.

Hypocrites and total shits. It should be called out at any opportunity especially in public and at any large gatherings.
They deny their own offspring the rights that they want for themselves.

Nooo! Bloody hell Ireland should never let him in!

He used it to move to Spain.

shouldicontactthisperson · 18/11/2025 19:33

Does it actually make travelling any easier though?

I have both Irish and UK passports and have travelled to various countries since Brexit. I can’t think of an airport that actually had separate queues - most were “EU and UK” or something to that effect.

Not really, it means you have free movement around the EU though (working/ living/ studying)

HRTQueen · 18/11/2025 19:35

Of course what other sanctions do you want

the feeedom of having a democracy means the public sometimes make rubbish choices it’s a price worth paying

The point is that it confers free movement so Irish passport holders can live and work in the EU whereas Brexit caused us to lose those rights. It’s not just about a queue at the airport.

Damsonjam1 · 18/11/2025 19:36

This infuriated me when a friend in her 50s, was smuggly discussing having got an Irish passport (through father). She had been very pro Brexit, anti immigrant and was full of glee when Johnson won 2019 election so 'Brexit would get done'.
I felt it was very insensitive for her to be almost boasting about her Irish (EU) passport, when she knew I had campaigned for remain. I deliberately haven't fallen out with anyone else over Brexit, biting my tongue on occasions, but the unfairness of this incensed me. Where is my EU passport?

Monty27 · 18/11/2025 19:38

Good point @Berlinlover No, they should not IMHO. Traitors.

They all have separate queues in the EU airports we have been since then, Italy, Spain, Spanish islands, France, lots of them in different parts of those countries, where have you been?

I met a woman at a night market in the village my parents live in France. Both her and her husband voted for Brexit. She had lived in France for 12 years. Voted Leave because of, in her words, "all the foreigners in Britain." She could and would not admit to also being a foreigner in France. No, no, she was an expat, don't you know.

We got onto the subject because I was talking about how my parents had moved to France in their mid fifties and I really wished I could do the same. She had no interest in the fact that her vote made that very much more difficult for me and people like me. She was the epitome of "I'm alright Jack" and as we left I was still telling her she was an hypocritical economic migrant - unlike my dad who actually took French citizenship after moving there.

I'm genuinely so bitter about this that I'd happily make it law to send back every single "expat" who voted to "protect Britain from foreigners" whilst living the dream in France, Spain, Portugal or wherever. Don't like foreigners? Don't become one.

I appreciate that this makes me unreasonable. I feel no shame.

MissyB1 · 18/11/2025 18:59

Shame them! Call them out on it to their faces! I’ve just got my Irish passport, but I voted remain and I’m very much in touch with all my Irish cousins (all our parents are dead now sadly). I’m going over to visit them all next year, can’t wait.

Béidh céad fáilte sa bhaile romhat. You will be very welcome.

The ghastly Ian Paisley Jr , who loathes Ireland , has an Irish passport. @MissyB1 is Irish in the spirit not just the letter of the law.

I dont think it is a price worth paying at times. The public are idiots.

jay55 · 18/11/2025 19:40

Why on earth should the Irish passport office be given the results of a British referendum?

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 18/11/2025 19:42

@shouldicontactthisperson no problem 😊

Because DURR the British get to tell the Irish what to do, right?!?

sorry, slipped into 1921 there

Slimtoddy · 18/11/2025 19:46

So do these people think Ireland should leave the EU.? I suggest you tell them there is a movement in Ireland to leave the EU - wind them up a little.

I do feel lucky that my kids and I (Irish born) have Irish passports. I didn't vote for Brexit.

I don't think anyone actually thinks that leave voters should be denied Irish passports, it just seems to be hypocritical to be seeking one out now, after many years of being entitled to one, just because it is now more convenient to have it.

It gives you many of the freedoms that most of us lost due to Brexit.
I’m really thankful that my DCs have Irish passports and can go to life and work and travel freely within the EU. I’m furious that my rights were taken away.
Of course it’s impossible to stop Brexiteers from claiming citizenship that they are entitled to. But morally it’s fucking disgusting and they should be ashamed of themselves.
