Is this dress to casual for a wedding?

I’m going to a wedding, taking place in a nice hotel in January.
Buffet and DJ, should be done by 11pm.
What do we think? Will this do or is it too casual?

Neither dress!

I have seen some lovely body con/draped midi dresses in navy/burgandy and they would look great with knee boots and a fur shirt jacket. That’s what would wear!

Needaglowup · 17/11/2025 22:51

I don’t think ever are right .. sorry OP , the first is quite frumpy , and the second is not wedding … your husband is the best man .. you need a nice outfit, not something from the back of your wardrobe..

ContentedAlpaca · 17/11/2025 23:15

My goto would probably be a jumpsuit

You’re the best man’s wife! Please get a new outfit. Neither of the dresses you’ve posted look right. They both have that ‘I already had it in the back of the wardrobe’ vibe. I get it… cost is probably an issue… and if you were a regular guest, I’d say dress no. 2 at a push. But you’re part of the wedding party! C’mon… you need to make an effort.

**Short/cropped jacket. Not a shirt!!

KneelyThere · 18/11/2025 08:40

If you are best man + one, you definitely need to dress well as you’ll be in quite a lot of photos I expect!

First, ask dp to find out what colour the bridesmaids are in.

Id definitely be looking for something I could dine and dance in but not too glitzy.
I think this is an occasion to spend some money on, if you can.

Do people wear knee boots to an elegant wedding?!

I am so old! 😂

If you’re on a limited budget, (or even if you’re not!) renting a dress for the day may be the best way of accessing a suitably lovely outfit.

This is a good introductory article on the best clothes rental sources - they all have different policies so you can just pick whichever suits you best:

I think they might if the knee boots are elegant too. I have a couple of smart pairs that I think would be wedding friendly.

JillMW · 18/11/2025 19:52

Definitely the second one, you will look lovely

letmebetheone · 19/11/2025 18:32

If I got told I have to dress 'Elegant' I would go in my jeans on principle. How pretentious!

How odd, rebelling over a fairly standard dress code for a wedding. Embarassing.

Peclet · 19/11/2025 22:37

I think a along skirt/dress that covers the knees and where the boot ends is very chic and perfectly fine for a winter wedding

What's embarrassing is the couple thinking they are so different to every other wedding that they think they need to tell their guests how to dress. Nobody needs to tell people the dress code is "Elegant" as that's the dress code for 99% of weddings and it's really patronising to mention it. That's what would make me want to rebel like the PP.

Ukefluke · 20/11/2025 00:29

Dont like the scarf thing, colour or fabric. And the dress looks smart casual but defo not wedding .
2nd is better.

OnToast81 · 20/11/2025 12:24

Okay so I went Christmas shopping this morning and found this in Tkmaxx, £15 down from £50. Thoughts?

I think that's lovely. It fits well and the colour is great.

Florencesndzebedee · 20/11/2025 13:09

Hard no from me, not very flattering. There was a red dress posted above from Nobody’s Child that would hit the right note.

SheinIsShite · 20/11/2025 13:31

Absolutely perfect for a January wedding and a total bargain! Well done @OnToast81 !!

WildCherryBlossom · 20/11/2025 14:03

Oh I love the green dress! 💚💚💚

Thanks, me too. This is definitely what I’m going to wear, and such a bargain!

The green dress is lovely.
Fits the bill perfectly.

You'll also have an extra bounce in your step from knowing it was such a bargain or at least I would. Smile

Vitriolinsanity · 22/11/2025 21:50

Lovely! May I suggest taking it to the dry cleaners to be steamed rather than attempting to iron it.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 23/11/2025 21:04

Second for sure. First one is a bit meh
