Is this dress to casual for a wedding?

I’m going to a wedding, taking place in a nice hotel in January.
Buffet and DJ, should be done by 11pm.
What do we think? Will this do or is it too casual?

Second dress is better. The first is a bit funeral.

fluffiphlox · 17/11/2025 14:27

Not the first outfit as I don’t think it passes as ‘elegant’.

Sidebeforeself · 17/11/2025 14:32

Gish how we all differ in our perceptions! One thinks is a funeral outfit , someone else says beach!!!
Personally I don’t think the first is smart enough for a wedding. Second is fine if you are just going to the night do, although you could cover up with a smart jacket I suppose.

curious79 · 17/11/2025 14:35

It’s dowdy. If he’s in a mourning suit or black tie you’ll look underdressed potentially

I would go off what he’s wearing

Second is evening wear - which may suit the venue

QuiltPlantCandle · 17/11/2025 14:35

You may not know the couple getting married, but you are the wife of the best man, so not just a random plus one.

I think out of the two, the second one fits the bill much better.

Gettingclose · 17/11/2025 14:41

Second I think. Maybe add a smart jacket for the ceremony part.

TheGirlattheBack · 17/11/2025 14:54

I don’t think either are wedding appropriate. The first is a summer floral day dress - the second is a cocktail dress. For an elegant January wedding you need something different, especially as the best man’s wife.

As an example of something you could buy inexpensively this would be more appropriate.

Joelle Dress in Purple

Joelle is all elegance from the front with a reveal at the back. Designed with long balloon sleeves and a button fastening at the back of the neck, her true beauty comes from the open back with sash detail. This recycled satin number looks as good as i...

You are Best Man's plus one.
Best Man is an important role .
Given wedding is taking place in January you may need to re think your outfit.
First is too summery second is too glitzy ...this is my opinion.
I think you need to give more context.

Is it a big wedding
What age group are you in.
What size are you in dresses

Maverick66 · 17/11/2025 14:56

If you look on Style and Beauty there is a thread about a January wedding .

Thebigonesgetaway · 17/11/2025 14:58

the Second is a very evening dinner dance black tie type dress, the first is I’m starting ti think covered up with and old scarf for a reason.

op, maybe time for a new dress. Do you have any budget you could spend?

it maybe vain but I think if it 3as the first time I was meeting my husbands colleagues, and an elegant wedding, I’d not want to turn up in some casual day dress with a big scarf and I’d not want to be over dressed either.id try to make an effort to dress appropriately.

WildCherryBlossom · 17/11/2025 15:02

The second one looks better to me. You need to feel comfortable and confident. It’s not necessarily easy being the wife of the best man. He will be off performing best man duties some of the time and you have to fend for yourself. You may find yourself on show - on top table of included in group photos. Make sure you feel good in what you are wearing.

I have this in my wardrobe, better or to much? It’s Navy and silver.

Definitely this one. Get some nice accessories too

WashYourDamnRice · 17/11/2025 15:23

Honestly neither are great. The first looks drab especially with that old scarf around it and the second looks like a prom dress. As the plus one of the best man I'd be looking for something more appropriate.

mamagogo1 · 17/11/2025 15:27

I opt for the second as they have quoted an “elegant” dress code. (I think posting a dress code for weddings is cheeky with the exception of telling people not to dress up, that’s fine, went to a wedding and it stated, the groom only wears jeans, hopefully he’ll be persuaded to buy a new pair followed by a smiley face.)

Dartmoorcheffy · 17/11/2025 15:32

Have a look on shein. I got this for a wedding and it was great.

Is this dress to casual for a wedding?
Janus · 17/11/2025 15:35

To be absolutely honest neither of them. First one looks like an average day in the office ant best and second one looks like something you’d throw over a bikini at the beach. Can you describe you, your budget, your figure, what colours (not really black) you like? I’m sure someone can come up with a more fitting outfit then.

HermioneWeasley · 17/11/2025 15:40

If you’re broke and can’t get anything else I’d go for the second but NOT with a shawl- theyre very 90s. Of the dress is fitted on you, you could do an oversized blazer or a little faux fur jacket.

definitely not the first

oh cmon, no one is wearing that evening gown down the beach.

The first one I think you attached the wrong photo, it’s got an old scarf covering most of it, so you can’t see the shape or arms etc,

the second one seems quite glitzy, I’d put the right pic of the first ine up.

How do you know the scarf is old? 😂

It looks it? Might not be, but I suspect it is. I thought at first it was the wrong ohoto, but now thinking she’s tried to cover it up like the winter scarf makes it smart. It doesn’t. 👀

lemoncrisp · 17/11/2025 15:45

Second one is 'elegant'. First one ....meh!

Sorry, I was looking on my phone and thought they were stripes, actually I think it’s more sequins of some sort? It looked like a summer dress to me but I think it’s not. Even if sequins I still think it’s more of a summer dress with the straps being so thin?

Looks like a pashmina to me and if it’s a genuine cashmere pashmina, age only adds to the charm

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/11/2025 15:48

Not keen on the first one (what I can see of it, a scarf covers a lot of it). The second one looks perfect for an elegant wedding (defo need a cover up though depending on the weather), with great accessories.

Enrichetta · 17/11/2025 15:51

Definitely the second - with a short tailored jacket (velvety?), or a nice bolero.
