Is this dress to casual for a wedding?

I’m going to a wedding, taking place in a nice hotel in January.
Buffet and DJ, should be done by 11pm.
What do we think? Will this do or is it too casual?

I think@Enrichetta nails the cover up - tailored jacket, nipped in at the waist, same colour as the dress but plain velvet (or similar fabric). Lovely.

Whichever you will feel most comfortable in. Who cares really once you've ticked the, I made a little effort box?

I would have asked whether you are entirely comfortable on the Style and Beauty board, @pumpkinscake - but I see this thread has been posted in AIBU, so I guess it’s open season …

pushthebuttonnn · 17/11/2025 18:32

Another vote for the second one, perfect for a Wedding. The first is a bit frumpy (sorry!) and looks like something you'd wear in summertime to the shops.

Thatsnotmynamee · 17/11/2025 18:36

First one is very my mum 😬 Second one not my cup of tea, but sure you look fab in it! I'd go for that from the two options

Vitriolinsanity · 17/11/2025 18:47

The first isn’t elegant at any speed. The second is better but please don’t kill it with a wrap, when you could pick up a a really nice satin/fur/velvet jacket for that would be elegant

The second with something over the shoulders.

Edited

Haha, yes. Well, I'm not style and beauty territory, that's for sure. I like to feel comfortable, and not inappropriate. Anything else is a bonus!

Wow, I’ve just finished work and didn’t expect so many responses.
To answer some of your questions, i’m 43 and a size 12.
Blonde hair and I’ve always thought blue is a good colour on me. The second dress is Navy it just looks black in the photo.
I’ve been told it’s a small wedding, 30 guests but that’s it really.
I think I’ll have to go shopping, the first dress I feel very comfortable in but posters are correct, it is a summer dress that I thought I’d get away with draping a shawl around.
The sequin dress I bought years ago but have only worn once, in the summer to a beach wedding, so again posters are correct that it’s a bit summery.
It could work with a jacket, but what shoes would you pair it with? I’ve added a clearer picture.

If you're going to wear dress 2 I would go for a grey/ brown (like mink colour) faux fur stole. It's very evening though.

CountryCousin · 17/11/2025 20:33

Honestly just buy something up to date and suitable for a winter ceremony.

RockaLock · 17/11/2025 20:38

If I was going as a plus one to a wedding where I didn’t know the couple, then there is no way I would be bothering to buy a new outfit for it!

People way overthink weddings - both dresses are smart, presentable, and either will be fine.

SwedishEdith · 17/11/2025 20:50

I don't know if you plan to buy anything new for Christmas Day/over Christmas but I feel you could kill two birds with the one stone with one outfit here.

k1233 · 17/11/2025 21:40

Not sure why people think over dressed is a bad thing. Much better option than under dressed on a dress code of "elegant".

Depends on the individual. I'd always be more uncomfortable over dressed than under dressed. And being patronisingly told to how to dress for a standard wedding by appearing "elegant" would make me want to dress down further out of sheer irritation.

SheinIsShite · 17/11/2025 21:53

Dartmoorcheffy · 17/11/2025 15:32

Have a look on shein. I got this for a wedding and it was great.

Urgh. Nothing screams elegant wedding more than slave made shite flown half way round the world.

@OnToast81 do you know any of the other guests at all? To speak to in a “what are you wearing” way?

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 17/11/2025 21:57

The second dress

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 17/11/2025 21:58

Got to love the suggestions that come in on wedding outfit threads

They're always usually so hideous and absolutely not the OP's style based off what they've shown as an idea

This one does not disappoint on them

rogueherries · 17/11/2025 21:58

Second one, going by the dress code. First one is mostly just a shawl and looks a bit shabby.

SheinIsShite · 17/11/2025 22:05

I would go for something like this . You need sleeves and coverage in January!!

netflixfan · 17/11/2025 22:06

The second one, with a little bolero or jacket

Namechanged999999 · 17/11/2025 22:12

They are both horrendous. Buy yourself something in the sales.

Catwoman8 · 17/11/2025 22:24

Definitely not the first one,it is far too summery and casual.

I don't think the second is quite right either sorry. It looks like more of a Christmas party outfit with the sequins. I would look for something new that will be also be warm enough without the need of a shawl or scarf.
