Are rumoured to follow Denmark's, which include the seizure of valuables from people arriving here to pay their accommodation costs.

Is anyone else disgusted by this?! How will it work, they can take people's jewellery, phones etc., and leave them with nothing? What sort of message does that send?

The left dominate media especially the BBC, publishing the arts, public sector etc. In the real world, has immigration been discussed without the word "racist" being used at regular intervals?

"You do spout some nonsense". Bit rude particularly coming from you.

There's plenty of news out there and a danger that we'll all end up in our own bubbles watching GBNews but not Channel 4 and reading only the Telegraph and Express OR Guardian and Mirror.

Although social media going to separate us even more.

I'm never quite sure where this Real World actually is. It often seems to be a creation of those who cite it. I worked in the public sector. Still had to get a mortgage and collect qualifications and do all sorts of things that felt pretty real to me. I didnt have a job for life and was made redundant so that cliche about jobbsecurity didnt work out for me.

My brother works in the private sector at bank in the City of London so some might argue that his world is less real than mine. I think we all live in the real world but with different experiences.

i have never voted Tory! I can’t stand them. That’s my point we need investment - public investment and spending to reset and rebuild our failing services.

Who’s going to invest though? The government cant borrow to invest as it is wasting so much money and not taking welfare cuts and tax rises seriously so the bond market thinks it’s a joke, and the government has so many anti business policies (not being able to sack a worker who you employ then instantly goes on long term sick with ‘stress’, planning laws making building a factory nigh on impossible) no companies want to move here.

We all like them - nothing divisive or bad about either the poorest of the wealthiest. It’s just saying the wealthiest to pay that little bit more tax. No brainer :)

I don’t think it would be a one off firstly - it would be a regular, annual tax. Take an individual who has assets - eg property - valued at £40m, cash wealth valued at £5m - which likely wouldn’t be just sat in a savings account it would be invested in instruments that would generate interest and returns. A tax of 1% would eat into for example, the interest earned on investments and yes, the value of assets. Which should be generating and also providing leverage for further wealth creation. There are right now multi millionaires asking to pay more tax (and full disclosure - this is not me :). I am a landowner and own multiple properties but I’d be happy to pay that bit more tax, even tho no where near the £10m wealth market too.

If the government declare an annual wealth tax from the outset there is NO WAY the wealthy would hang around. What planet are you on???

We need the public sector to invest. Hence we need more via wealth tax as a start. But also the point of a wealth tax is a rebalancing of wealth distribution too.

I’ll side step your comments about saving workers who are on sick leave….

Well they obviously can, hence why we got Brexit and why we’ll be getting the fourth reich in 2029, so look forward to that.

Or;

you could all listen to what I say and advert that disaster once and for all. Is that really a tough choice to make?

poetryandwine · 18/11/2025 18:50

I had forgotten that @Swiftasthewind advocated removing the vote from the British white working class when I said earlier that they had some interesting opinions.

For avoidance of doubt, this is not one of them - not ‘interesting in a good way, that is.

Like the remark about preferring Chinese hegemony to American might and the stupid challenge that we find refereed papers proving a negative, this type of post seems to me simply designed to wind people up. It isn’t even well reasoned enough to debate. I feel sure the poster knows this.

Tiramisutully · 18/11/2025 18:51

That’s about 2% of the wealthy though? Those that like to show off to their mates about how wealthy they are. Real people don’t think like that. It would be so easy if they did but they don’t.

If there was any merit in what you are saying don’t you think Rachel Reeves would clutch it with both hands? Shout of from the rooftops? Why isn’t she doing it do you think?

Reform won’t win the next election - they don’t want the responsibility of governing. (See chaos at Kent county council). What they are succeeding at is directing policy without even being in power, which in my view is extremely dangerous. They have the backing of so much ££ support - they are literally running an election scale campaign 24/7. My worry is they continue to win support - they become part of a coalition with the equally vile DUP - you’d hope even the Tories as a whole wouldn’t get into bed with reform.

Well… why isn’t Reeves doing a lot of things is the question! They / she is considering it - of course it’s contentious - but it’s being considered. If you wanna hear more Gary’s Exonomics - he explains things in plain English (which I prefer rather than politico jargon….)

You wound me. I’ll have you know that I receive many private messages of approval from users on this website who thank me for making a strong case for what the left has to offer.

I’d wager you yourself are not so popular, I don’t think I’ve even ever seen you round these parts before 💅

This is a very good post. Reform haven’t been able to manage their way out of a paper bag yet. I think they see themselves as kingmakers, so to speak, or chaos agents. I repeat that Nigel has always been about Nigel .

It’s stuff like a big bus on IG to get positive comments. If so inclined they could easily hand over a large chunk of their patriotic millions.

But quietly just giving to HMRC wouldn’t give them the publicity they crave. THAT’S the issue.

I don’t want Reform to win. I want a fairer society. A fair society is built on a proper tax regime with proper taxes, not idiotic ideas that give the rich a bloody nose at the same time as doing terrible damage to the UK economy and reducing the future tax take.

Unless we start with grown up tax policies that boost growth and raise taxes in a way that does least damage to the economy this country will get worse and worse, those with transferable skills will leave in ever increasing numbers and Reform will win easily.

Same. I want some reasonable understanding of incentives.
