Are rumoured to follow Denmark's, which include the seizure of valuables from people arriving here to pay their accommodation costs.

Is anyone else disgusted by this?! How will it work, they can take people's jewellery, phones etc., and leave them with nothing? What sort of message does that send?

We need to reduce spending. Cut our coat to suit our cloth. Rather than tax rises to pay for things like payrises for already well paid public sector workers. Stop net zero ruining manufacturing.

Otherwise Labour kill the golden goose if it hasn't already been killed. The problem with tax rises for patriotism is that no one believes Labour are in any way patriotic.

I can’t stand this Labour government in general tbh. My worry is that SO MUCH has been cut already - is there actually anything left to cut? We have failing services - housing crisis, the expense of temporary accommodation, the crisis in adult social care, school buildings, hospital buildings collapsing, roads not being repaired, train networks failing yet being increasingly expensive (privatised), longer and longer waiting times for GP and operations creating more and more long term sick people, costing us more… and I could go on. Cuts to youth provision - are there any youth clubs any more? Cost of childcare making work for families almost nonsensical, due to cost of childcare etc etc. We really just can’t cut more and more - it’s just kicking the can down the road. We need investment - we need to repair buildings, roads, bring public transport, water back into public ownership. We need to better support families, children. We need to invest in our health service. We are all living longer now and social care - elderly care is a massive cost. We can’t just cut. We need more money and it is there - we just need to tax it from those who really can afford it, and it’s a patriotic thing to do, surely.

Totally correct - but everyone is benefiting for public services, tax pays for our roads, our schools, our waste collection and on and on. The poorest to the wealthiest all benefit from these things. Talking of squeezing pips - this is the rub, the people of this country can’t (and I’m including buisnesses too), afford their pips to be squeezed anymore and nor can public services. If we don’t as a nation have money to spend our economy falters - and it’s a contributing factor to high street decline for example too. Realistically there is no other answer bar - those with £10m + to pay 1-2 % more. Considering the interests on assets or wealth on £10m would more than cover this, it’s a small yet patriotic thing to do. There are many millionaires who have formed a campaign saying they want to pay more tax - hopefully it’s a bit of a no brainer :)

Wealth taxes do irreparable long term damage to the economy and cost more than they’ll ever raise. Google what the IFS thinks. it’s the most damaging thing to do in the budget which is why Rachel Reeves is wisely going no where near it.

if you think public has been taxed until the pips squeak (and I disagree) we’ll just have to take an axe to welfare and other public services instead.

Lots can be cut. Net zero (electricity costs are decimating manufacturing), . Hs2. The public sector workforce. DEI departments. Raise the pension age (its going to happen anyway).
The main expenses are the NHS and social care. Get people in work. Unfortunately unemployment is rising due to RRs ENI rise and Angela's workers rights bill. So things arent looking great mainly due to Labour.

But we won't be able to kick them out.

You're also encouraging people here in order to work. Which is probably not a great idea.

That's probably the point of difference then. I dont want to kick them all out if they are genuine refugees. Or even if they go on to become productive members of society.

I also dont want to encourage large scale un-genuine refugees and freely admit that I'm not 100% sure of what best course of action is. But I do feel that there's lots of heat and not enough light generated by politicians and commentators around issues of migration.

there is a campaign by multi millionaires right now asking for them to be taxed more. There are always studies pro/ anti taxing wealth. Taking an axe to welfare and public services - that’s what’s happened over past 15 years - is there anything actually left to cut? 85% on average of council budgets is spent on adult social (read elderly : disabled) care and temporary housing. That’s just 15% for everything else. We must invest to get this country back on its feet not take things away. I’m sure you look around you and see the pain people are going through - it can be turned around, we need to make the choices that support the majority - taxing 1-2% from those with £10m + is small fry, a no brainer really - and they want to be taxed so I mean… get it done I say.

Tiramisutully · 18/11/2025 18:05

The triple lock as to be binned in the very near future. The way it is designed it will literally bankrupt the UK within a few years. Ot was only meant to be a temporary measure to quickly catch up pensions. It wasn’t meant to be permanent.

Campaign by millionaires to be taxed more!!?? They can contact HMRC and pay more tax if they want to. Quite easily.

The problem is (which was quite predictable) is that because discussion has been shut down on this for so long mainly by the left, no one trusts them to do the right thing now.

Well, if you ve been voting Con for the last few GE's this is what you end up with.

Its not as if these cuts have actually given us any benefit, we are still taxed highly, the national debt is almost 100% and that was pre Labour btw.

The transfer of wealth to the already wealthy continues unabated.

What your post does highlight though is the desperate need for public sector investment, unless you think a private company will fix the roads FOC and open up a youth centre or 10 ?

We've had 14 years of "private is best" and look what its given us? Water industry anyone? even our once world class Forensic science services are next to useless, following their privatisation and closures in 2012.

But as we are on a migration thread, at least Labour have cut net migration, down from 420k in 23/24 to just over 345k this year.

Ok so I’ll bite. Say I have a company worth £100m on paper. A wealth tax of 2% means I’ll have to come up with £2m overnight. Where am I getting that from? Do you think because my company is worth £100m I gave loads of liquid cash lying around? Do I sell shares of my company in the open market? Because that’s a major faff. And I’m already paying massive amounts of corporation tax, and I employ loads of people and pay load of tax for them and me.

I’ll pay the wealth tax this time, but even though the government SAYS it’s a one off I don’t believe them at all, and I’ll make damn sure I’ll ship operations overseas as soon as possible.

People that have wealth - billionaires - are international business people. They’re taxed in countries they choose to be taxed in. They can do this because they live across multiple countries. They can spend a few less weeks in the UK a year a few more elsewhere, duck under the tax residency rules and pay no tax here whatsoever, paying tax instead in countries like Italy, the country of choice for many wealthy individuals fleeing the UK.

But hey, as long as you get £2m out of them as a one off…

Labour migration figures have dropped as so many Brits are moving overseas. And those leaving aren’t those claiming benefits and living off minimum wage are they? It’s the top rate tax payers, the young with vital transferable skills who can easily get jobs anywhere..

The left dominate media especially the BBC, publishing the arts, public sector etc. In the real world, has immigration been discussed without the word "racist" being used at regular intervals?

"You do spout some nonsense". Bit rude particularly coming from you.

Of course. Starmer and co relied on far right, racist and extremist until a couple of weeks ago. Culture wars and all that.

It’s only recently it’s changed due to threat to political careers.

I don’t think it would be a one off firstly - it would be a regular, annual tax. Take an individual who has assets - eg property - valued at £40m, cash wealth valued at £5m - which likely wouldn’t be just sat in a savings account it would be invested in instruments that would generate interest and returns. A tax of 1% would eat into for example, the interest earned on investments and yes, the value of assets. Which should be generating and also providing leverage for further wealth creation. There are right now multi millionaires asking to pay more tax (and full disclosure - this is not me :). I am a landowner and own multiple properties but I’d be happy to pay that bit more tax, even tho no where near the £10m wealth market too.
