So who is going to be brave enough to ask whether Shabana Mahmood's proposed reforms are right/sensible/racist?

Is Shabana Mahmood right or wrong to restrict asylum seeker's rights? In general?

Labour need to get a grip ,and not have the backbenchers piss on their chips .
Otherwise we know what's coming at the next election.
Praying this is the start of labour taking charge

Happyjoe · 16/11/2025 20:26

I think Labour have absolutely no choice than to be seen to do something. Vast majority of the UK has fallen for the rubbish that blames immigrants for all the things wrong in this country, they conflate often illegal and legal immigrants, of which the latter is in much higher numbers and cannot see that public services etc are because of years of underfunding, not completely down to immigration.

I also think that the likes of Reform being in power, immigrants will be treated a heck of a lot worse than what Labour are proposing and that's pretty scary.

That said, if this starts to stop people making the dangerous journey on an unsuitable boat and paying the people traffickers then ok, it's a start. They should be able to apply from another country too, instead of having to be on British soil. They also need to clamp down on the illegal workers, who a, can be exploited badly and b, not paying taxes. Stop that, that also will help people think twice about getting aboard a dangerous boat. I do not think that so-called economic migrants should not be granted asylum at all, that's not what asylum is about.

Sadly, I have zero confidence that any government will a, be able to keep track of those granted asylum (I don't think they even know who is here) and b, be able to afford to keep track of everyone and the personal situation of each and every one. Our Home Office is poor and it kind of renders the whole thing useless imo, people will just disappear.

The tone of these threads is just depressing. I understand that people have genuine concerns about immigration, but people talk about migrants as if they're sub-human.

There is no compassion. No empathy. No humanity. I hate what our society has become.

It's the rapes. It tends to be an empathy killer.

And yes I know British men rape too, that's not an argument for more of it.

LingeringDogFart · 16/11/2025 20:31

I think it’s just tough talk with Shabana Manhood. Nothing is going to stop small boat crossings. Nothing is going to change. We will still continue seeing lawyers and various pressure groups doing everything possible to frustrate any attempt to remove people. Even now we still have people who’s asylum claims were rejected years ago still living in the country and making appeal after appeal after appeal.

Sweetiedarling7 · 16/11/2025 20:32

Can’t vote because you haven’t explained your intention for the options.
I am glad labour is doing this. She is quite right that it is essential to stop the issue of immigration dividing the country.
I am a lifelong labour voter but hugely disappointed by this government so far.
I hope labour mps get behind this and it doesn’t turn into a huge squabble with name calling and empire building.

Well said. I don’t know about Shabana being racist but some of these comments are straight out of the reform handbook

Not many children coming via the boats. Refugees used to be the vulnerable, elderly, children, women. Most young to middle aged men were the most likely, as in Ukraine, to remain in their home countries.

About 15% of arrivals on boats is children afaik. That's still quite a lot.

I think she mentioned that changing the laws to make it easier to remove failed/overstayed migrants. I presume what you are talking about is what she's keen to stop?

In all honesty, how the heck would anyone know if a rapist or not, esp if never raped before? So you propose no immigrants, whatsoever allowed in the UK just in case because the UK has it's own rapists?!

Some are more ok with Labour doing this and setting the tone.

There are around 54 countries in Africa, 43–48 in Asia, 12 in South America, 14 in Oceania, and 33 in the Americas.

We know why they come to Britain, for the golden ticket, as it's now being called by Labour.

They can choose a nearer country for a better life in their own region. I'm sure there are plenty of empathetic people in Africa, Asia, South America, Oceania and the Americas and lots of room for them to settle without any need to leave those regions to travel all the way to golden ticket Britain for the golden ticket.

This white supremacist attitude that only our empathetic golden ticket is good enough to stop you hating us, and feeling depressed about your hatred of us, is being exploited ruthlessly.

5MinuteArgument · 16/11/2025 20:46

I'm glad she gets that this issue is dividing the nation. It's a class issue.

If you're comfortably off and living in a middle class neighbourhood, you're not affected.

People swim the bloody channel. I've been across it dozens of times in small boats in all weathers.

We are approving "asylum" for people who've been in other European countries for years and acquired long criminal records.

But oh dear, we will be hated by the depressed empathetic people if we don't.

Carla786 · 16/11/2025 20:56

Right. I love her - she's tough but compassionate. People framing her as Suella 2.0 are getting her completely wrong. She's fighting with racism from the far right and far-left critics who accuse her of being cruel : but I trust she will stick to her guns.

I hope she'll be the next PM : Mette Fredriksen provides a good blueprint imo.

Portakalkedi · 16/11/2025 21:02

They're being forced to look as if they're actually going to tackle the problem Great in theory but it's not going to happen. Too many whinging liberals and human rights lawyers who will have a field day with this.

Are you calling me a white supremacist? That would be a new one, so at least you're being original. But you might want to go away and do some reading to find out what that actually means.

I think you're probably trying to be goady but I can't really be arsed to engage. You're just not worth the effort.

I take it you’re a Labour voter but why ‘compassionate’?

And if it doesn’t work and men in particular arrive because women and children can’t is it still good?

SquirrelosaurusSoShiny · 16/11/2025 17:55

Your poll doesn't really indicate the question maybe edit it? I don't know if you're BU or not.

I think there will be general support for this in the average British home, even if people are publicly outraged by it. Tens of thousands of undocumented young men (often with very different cultural attitudes) arriving and flooding small towns will of course lead to a backlash. I'm just glad Labour are finally holding their noses and trying to admit that there's a problem.

Yes if the left don’t veto it.

I hope the UK is never at war then, or being gay becomes punishable by death, that you are totally oppressed because you were born a woman etc.
