To allow DD to buy this 'obscene' top?

DD14 just lost 10kg, went down from 62 to 52kg (she's pretty petite, only 160 cm tall) and wants to buy herself this top since she's now at a healthy weight for her age and was putting off buying new tops earlier because she didn't want them to stop fitting her: https://www.victoriassecret.co.uk/style/su826145/w96067

My sister thinks it's 'obscene' and a 'lingerie ad' as well as 'something she saw on social media' which is complete nonsense because she uses one of those granny flip phones and isn't on social media except discord, spotify and IRC (no idea if those count)

I don't see the problem honestly, there's nothing obscene about lingerie if you ask me in the 1st place, and VS has always made clothes

This is a photo of the top in the colour she wants it:

It's just a t shirt.
In all honesty I would probably discourage my daughter from getting it but that's about me and my thoughts on the brand and we can have jokey conversations that get to the root of why in a gentle way. She has strong opinions and would equally back her corner on it. Ultimately it would be her decision and I would not judge another child for wearing it.
If you have no opinions on it, then there is no point having any discussions with her. After your child's journey that may even do more harm than good.

It's a good time for your daughter to figure herself out while you are here to catch her if she makes a mistake.
At 14 my daughter bought a little crochet bikini top that two years later she is yet to wear, but she got to feel what it was like to own such a thing. I would have helped her find times when she could wear it and ways to wear it and not feel self conscious or judged, but for whatever reason she hasn't experimented with wearing it. This t shirt is literally just a t shirt with a shop name on it.

It’s a really popular brand with teens, especially the fragrances. It’s underwear yeah, but it’s not Ann Summers. Your sister sounds like a puritan.

ruethewhirl · 15/11/2025 08:56

This wouldn't bother me. Your sister's pearl-clutching imo.

Sharptonguedwoman · 15/11/2025 08:58

mamagogo1 · 14/11/2025 23:39

Unfortunately Victoria’s Secret is synonymous with lingerie so it will have that connotation

Exactly this.

MrsKateColumbo · 15/11/2025 08:58

It's tacky and therefore perfect for a teen girl experimenting haha, I used to feel SO rebellious with my FCUK top 🤣🤣, I even know an adult woman with a playboy bunny on her lower back, at least it's not that!

Overall I dislike VS as they had problems in the past with leaving garment workers unpaid iirc but it is aimed squarely at the under 25 bracket so she is the target customer

StringersBell · 15/11/2025 08:29

VS may do underwear but for her generation they do so much more. As others have said it’s now all about their perfume and bags…my DD similar age loves their stuff and doesn’t own any lingerie : undies from there. It really isn’t the same brand to them as it is to older people who still only associate it with lingerie

Exactly. Dd is the same age and they don't think of VS as a lingerie brand. She has a couple of sweatshirts from there, the perfume and a few body sprays. They are also very into Y2k fashion and the VS original PINK bootcut leggings are really sought after. Dd paid a crazy amount on depop for a pair. I think it's only the older generation that think lingerie for the brand.
On a separate note OP your Dsis sounds incredibly prudish and I've no idea why you would listen to such nonsense. Let your dd buy a t-shirt if she likes it. Absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Would she wear one with Ann Summers on the front? Similar places to me. Yet it would seem a bit inappropriate for school. Maybe that's what your sister is getting at.

Ann Summers sells sex toys and fetish wear. It’s an adult store that also sells lingerie (primarily so they have something they can legally put in the window).

Victoria’s Secret just sells ordinary underwear and pyjamas. They’re not the same thing. Victoria’s Secret sells the kind of stuff you can buy in the underwear section of any department store.

vickylou78 · 15/11/2025 09:03

Wow you sister must be a right kill joy!! Calling a grey t shirt 'obscene' is a real stretch!!

I personally wouldn't want to be walking round advertising a lingerie brand but honestly who would even notice that on a 14yr old. It's a total non issue.let her wear it if she wants to.

Clearinguptheclutter · 15/11/2025 09:04

It’s not obscene

it’s an unremarkable overpriced tshirt

i’d not be delighted about the brand name on it but I couldn’t get worked up about it

halfandhalfchipsandrice · 15/11/2025 09:04

I can't stand Victoria's secret and their obsession with men wearing their underwear so I don't like it at all - but it's not "obscene". Would be better without the advertising across the front but your daughter is young and impressionable.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/11/2025 09:07

OP's sister is right.
A 14 year old girl shouldn't be advertising for a lingerie brand. Yes, they sell other clothing, but they are primarily a lingerie line. The VS fashion angels don't strut out in sweats.

LlynTegid · 15/11/2025 09:08

I don't think it is obscene in any way. Advertising Victoria's Secret could lead to questions about her underwear (from girls not just boys) which may be embarrassing though, so your DD should be prepared to be firm/blunt in her response if that happens.

Viviennemary · 15/11/2025 09:11

Its absolutely fine. And Im not a fan of young girls in very skimpy tops. There's nothing wrong with this one.

Mischance · 15/11/2025 09:17

Tell your sister to take a hike. None of her business.
The fact that so many on here are saying it's just a boring grey T shirt gives you some idea how the rest British public might react.
What I object to is that it will cost a fortune cos of this illegible bit of writing. What a rip-off ...

MrsBucketHat · 15/11/2025 09:23

LaserPumpkin · 14/11/2025 23:46

It’s better than the FCUK ones everyone used to wear back in the day

Haha yes! My best friend had one that basically said “undress me and cover me in peanut butter”! She would wear it for 6th form,

PGmicstand · 15/11/2025 09:25

Genevieva · 14/11/2025 23:47

I think the brand is marketing itself differently to teenagers. They sell affordable perfumes etc. Your sister is out of date.

They sell affordable perfumes, decent body sprays, and some comfy bras and shorts style underwear for teens.
It's not like Ann Summers where it's all scratchy nylon lace thongs and peephole bras.

whistlesandbells · 15/11/2025 09:26

What has it got to do with your sister what clothes your daughter wears? Why do you discuss this about your daughter with another family member? It’s a grey t shirt sold by a diversified brand.

Do I like it? No. Is it harmless to me? Yes. You’ve just made it into a big deal. Stop discussing your daughter’s choices with your sister.

pointythings · 15/11/2025 09:26

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 15/11/2025 01:04

Oh I’m dead against schools that are non uniform.
Don’t ask me why but I guess it’s the amount of thought and worry on what to wear each day for school and the competitive element.

Weird. Whole countries across the world manage to produce functional young adults in schools which don't have uniform. The British fetish for uniform is something I just cannot comprehend.

PersephonePomegranate · 15/11/2025 09:28

OwlBeThere · 15/11/2025 00:03

Not really the same, is it? Ann Summers sells cock rings and tassels for your nipples. VS sell tiny but at least functional underwear.

Most of the VS stuff isn't even tiny, it's very practical! It's only the models strutting the catwalk in the tiny underwear.

BoxesBoxesEverywhere · 15/11/2025 09:36

Eh?! Have you attached a wrong link or something?!
How is that obscene?! It's just a t-shirt 😕
Your sister's barking.
Also, try and make sure your dd doesn't hear any of her nonsense - so she loses weight and has a figure she's presumably now happy to wear things she likes more, last thing she needs is some daft aunt wittering on about obscenity over innocuous tops to make her feel self conscious!

StrongLikeMamma · 15/11/2025 09:37

It’s not obscene!!!

TY78910 · 15/11/2025 09:37

Yabayabadoo · 14/11/2025 23:39

🙄

Precisely

sanityisamyth · 15/11/2025 09:37

It looks more like a pyjama top than day wear but hardly obscene!!

QueenClinomania · 15/11/2025 09:42

Its not obscene.

It is advertising vs, but that isn't obscene.

Its not as bad as all that playboy stuff years back. Playboy bunny pencil cases, girls clothes etc.

But something doesn't have to be obscene to be inappropriate or in bad taste. And what constitutes those comes down to personal opinion. She has hers and you have yours.

Sassylovesbooks · 15/11/2025 09:44

I was expecting something way worse to be honest! It's a cropped t-shirt, that will show a little bit of skin around her middle. Yes, VS are known for their underwear but they sell nightwear, lounge wear, and clothing as well. You obviously need to be aware, the taller your daughter is, the more skin the top will show. Order it, ask her to try it on, and see how much skin it shows, if you're that worried. If it shows the amount on the model, I wouldn't be too concerned. Your sister is being ridiculous, your daughter is 14, not 8, and it's not like she wants to go out wearing a lacey bra, as a top!!
