To allow DD to buy this 'obscene' top?

DD14 just lost 10kg, went down from 62 to 52kg (she's pretty petite, only 160 cm tall) and wants to buy herself this top since she's now at a healthy weight for her age and was putting off buying new tops earlier because she didn't want them to stop fitting her: https://www.victoriassecret.co.uk/style/su826145/w96067

My sister thinks it's 'obscene' and a 'lingerie ad' as well as 'something she saw on social media' which is complete nonsense because she uses one of those granny flip phones and isn't on social media except discord, spotify and IRC (no idea if those count)

I don't see the problem honestly, there's nothing obscene about lingerie if you ask me in the 1st place, and VS has always made clothes

Your sister is nuts!

nomas · 15/11/2025 20:34

It’s not obscene at all and she should wear what she wants but I do wince a bit at the free advertising women and girls give to a company that was founded ‘to create a male-friendly environment enabling men to feel comfortable choosing excitingly exotic undergarments for their female partners or mistresses.’.

No issue with the top.
But the brand, google 'victorias secret brand owner, toxic misogyny and links to Jeffrey Epstein.
I wouldnt wear anything by that brand.
Teach her to support brands that align with her values.

Yes I was going to mention this too. Pretty grubby.

Lovehascomeandgone · 15/11/2025 22:32

wtf it’s a tshirt isn't it?

Aliceinunderland · 15/11/2025 22:54

Buy your sister one for Christmas 😇

I honestly don't know why you've posted this. You clearly don't agree with your sister.

I had an FCUK t-shirt back in the day and my sister had one with handprints on the boobs. This is tame in the extreme. It's a full coverage t-shirt for crying out loud.

I was going to bring up all those cropped t-shirts that 13 year olds used to wear in the 90s which really were obscene. Not really in the same league is it?!

Beesandhoney123 · 15/11/2025 23:42

Threefullskips · 15/11/2025 19:52

I have no idea what point you are trying to make. Would your husband wear a t-shirt with a womens underwear branding on it? You can get a plain t-shirt for less.

Also - I'm hugely amused by the fact that the men in your life go from zero to uncontrollable wild stallion and then straight back to zero.

@Threefullskips the post I was responding to was quoted.

I didn't say anything about my life and men in it being uncontrollable stallions. Nothing could be further from the truth.

maralagagirl · 16/11/2025 00:21

Beesandhoney123 · 15/11/2025 14:49

Are men really so up on underwear brands they would see that ordinary grey t shirt with its tiny logo in rhinestones and become uncontrollable wild stallions? How bloody insulting to everyone.

Vs marketing is not that amazing you know. Its pretty, nice and not expensive. Perfect.

Edited

If the tiny rhinestones mean nothing why are they there?

SezFrankly · 16/11/2025 00:30

Your sister is overreaching. it’s non of her business, and her language is over the top. To call anything your school age niece is going to wear “obscene” is pretty obscene in itself.

It’s a t-shirt. It’s fine.

All that matters is that your daughter likes it, and you’re fine with her choices.

Your sister sounds pretty toxic tbh

Beesandhoney123 · 16/11/2025 01:00

@maralagagirl to make an otherwise bog standard grey t shirt a bit more interesting, to add a bit of pizazz and glamour. Loads of reasons, none nefarious.

It's hardly a new phenomenon, putting the name of your shop on your products, especially if the demographic likes it.

If it was the leisurewear of my dd choice, I would buy it for her. She needs to associate with her peers, not her mum.

I certainly wouldn't be buying anything from Victoria's Secret - they used trans models last year. Yes, two men who say they're women were modelling underwear for women, and putting two female models out of a job.

Chickadee001 · 16/11/2025 03:08

Not remotely obscene!

BoxesBoxesEverywhere · 16/11/2025 03:36

Chickadee001 · 16/11/2025 03:08

Not remotely obscene!

I originally commented saying that I couldn't see anything obscene about it as it just looked like a normal top, which was my immediate reaction.
Then read the comments and realised I'd temporarily forgotten where I was which was MN😁
So the fact it says Victoria Secret on the front is a definite no go as means your dd is aligning with sluts (or something) and it means women's knickers
Someone who is trans apparently featured in an advert too and that's another no go as cosplaying women, outrage, no better than blackface etc etc

Chickadee001 · 16/11/2025 04:53

FHS what's wrong with EVERYONE overthinking stuff!! It's a T SHIRT!

Zypig · 16/11/2025 06:41

It’s a t shirt and she’s a teenager wanting to explore her personality. If this is the biggest battle you have with a 14 year old then wow she’s a good kid. Just wondering if your sister wore anything from French Connection when she was a teenager and their branding was ‘FCUK’ which was far more in your face sexualisation than a simple VS logo.

ArtesianWater · 16/11/2025 07:07

ClementinesForChristmas · 14/11/2025 23:46

As someone old enough to remember the Playboy logo being fashionable, YANBU OP. it’s not exactly stylish, but let the teen think she’s being grown up and sexy (she’ll cringe in a few years).

Yes, totally the same as Playboy bunny logos in the 90s. It's tacky and understandable why your sister thinks an inappropriate association, but not obscene in it s own right - it's just a t-shirt. And actually, not as bad as Playboy because VS is just lingerie and Playboy was soft porn.

FairKoala · 16/11/2025 07:32

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/11/2025 14:09

I think the thing is what it makes the male viewer think of. Underwear models, centrefold pictures for the older ones, the calendars - so cod psychology could conclude that it's the wearer telling men 'think about me undressed'.

God forbid we teach 14 year old girls that they have to not wear certain items or certain brands just incase a male decides the twinkling rhinestones drive him into a wild frenzy

I loved my FC tees back in the 90s. I had 'Bristol cities' and another that said 'kiss me quick, fcuk me slowly'.

OP, I'm a bit baffled that a t-shirt your daughter is considering buying is even a topic of conversation with your sister!

TheaBrandt1 · 16/11/2025 08:24

Good luck “teaching” teenage girls to only wear clothes their 40/50 something mothers approve of 😀. Have you ever met a teenage girl!!

14-15 are the worst years for this. My hard won advice (and numerous friends who’ve parented both easy and challenging teens) is pick your battles and clothes definitely is not the one to choose. Go in hard on clothes and upset them / damage their confidence and trash your relationship with them. All because you care what the neighbors / your sister might think about their outfits. Not great parenting.

allthingsinmoderation · 16/11/2025 09:12

Its a standard fitted T shirt popular amongst teens.
Tbh i'm concerned about the person who thinks this is "obscene" and "lingerie" because its a simple grey t shirt because that seems irrational.
If its the logo (rhinestone victorias secret) thats the issue,Victorias secrets makes clothing from fleecy pjs to sports wear not just underwear.

liveforsummer · 16/11/2025 09:23

It’s way better than us walking around in playboy logos back in the day 😆. And yes not comparable to Ann summers. A plain grey t shirt with a discreet logo should be so far down the list of vetos for a teen that you cant even see the list 😆

liveforsummer · 16/11/2025 09:25

maralagagirl · 16/11/2025 00:21

If the tiny rhinestones mean nothing why are they there?

For the same reason any clothing brand displays their logo. So it differentiates the item from other brands or unbranded clothing!

Mrswhiskers87 · 16/11/2025 09:47

I attempted to wear a lot worse when I was that age. Let your daughter crack on.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 16/11/2025 10:22

It's fine. It looks like any other top kids her age wear.

Branleuse · 16/11/2025 10:24

I think its a pyjama top.
