A lot of people here don't appreciate the value in what they have, and it would be beyond foolish to let this institution be decimated.

When I say here, I don't mean on MN, but in general in the UK

The archive radio and tv isn't great. So.many good shows not available to watch. And massive high salaries for presenters.

Talking about bloated - a while back, the BBC decided that it would move heavily into local news, via its website. There was absolutely no reason to do this, it's a large enough organisation already. Anyway, there was a massive outcry because they were going to choke off all the commercial local news websites and services. They were forced to back down. The BBC is like a huge, smug blob, that thinks it knows best about everything.

You mean they were going to compete with "Retch" and "Newsquest" both of whom specialise in clickbait about so called celebrities and what they can scrape from social media. There are very few genuine local news services anymore or local papers produced in the area they serve. that actually employ journalists

blossoms4cherry · 11/11/2025 13:08

it’s the huge salaries handed out

I’ve just read that Jonathan Munro who reported to Deborah Turness is on 300k!! Absolute madness while the poor minions on the ground doing the actual hard slog are paid crumbs. Standard for private but for public service that is disgusting.

LlamaNoDrama · 11/11/2025 13:11

@vellichoriaI heard they are going to make everyone pay again whether you watch it or not, but I'm not sure if it's true. I didn't look into it.

what would we lose? All I see is a broadcaster who's allowed sexual predators and abusers free rein. Savile, all the strictly dramas, gregg Wallace, Tim Westwood etc.

I stopped watching bbc news during Covid. I felt like it was dumbed down to newsround level.

Livelovebehappy · 11/11/2025 13:11

They do some good but that doesn't excuse the deliberate editing changes to the Panarama Trump programe. Badly thought out and arrogant that they thought they could get away with it. I hope Trump's threatened lawsuit is successful. Not only do they break impartiality but they enable bad and inappropriate behaviour from their employees. Yet still Davey is spouting how great they are with no acknowledgment of huge errors made.

We have a few good ones locally. And I choose to give them my clicks.

SunnyViper · 11/11/2025 13:13

The BBC is an absolute joke and has been for years. Can’t wait for it to go.

tobee · 11/11/2025 13:13

It's not a state broadcaster.

Almondflour · 11/11/2025 13:15

I disagree. They are institutionally biased and force their left wing propaganda when they should be impartial and report on facts not on their opinions. I cancelled my tv licence and they won’t ever get a penny out of this household again.

Whammyammy · 11/11/2025 13:16

Please can you describe this great value that the BBC offer and that i will supposedly miss.

I haven't watched the bbc in years, nor do I pay them money.

TheAutumnalCrow · 11/11/2025 13:17

Misla · 11/11/2025 12:52

Woman's Hour? Which Jenni Murray got hounded out of for daring to not believe the blessed BBC scripture that trans-identified men are women?

That's first on the cancellation list.

Absolutely. Woman’s Hour has become a cesspit of anti-women propaganda amplified by ideological nutjobs and their enablers, with only the very rare exception.

Edited

Well, I guess if they make us all pay regardless of whether we watch it, then there is not a great deal of a choice but I won't go back to it as long as there is one.

Like you, at some point, I just started to feel that they push all this politically correct madness on the public while their own org is full of pervs and hypocrites. I've not thought their representation of news was unbiased or in any way balanced for a long time and when they started pushing all sorts of lunacy into entertainment as well, I just felt like I had it with them. Even if they make us all pay, they can't make anyone watch all that rubbish they produce.

Ihatetomatoes · 11/11/2025 13:18

Groupthink on Trans which is harmful to women. The BBC with the idiots within the organisation will bring it down. Men aren't women and never will be.

The pushing the genocide and mass starvation in Gaza narrative whilst showing pictures of children with known medical conditions who are underweight because they've swallowed the Pro Pal flag waving rather then fact check.

The big one Trump cutting and pasting stories to suit their narrative

The BBC should not be bailed out by taxpayers due to their self inflicted woes.

Threefullskips · 11/11/2025 13:19

user427654 · 11/11/2025 12:47

I'm including radio too.

I certainly don't agree with everything they broadcast, but that doesn't matter to me. They lean in both directions and sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't, but in general, it all balances out. I thought, for example, that, in their attempts to be even-handed and neutral, their coverage leading up to Brexit was pretty terrible overall.

But the breadth and depth of their programming is astonishing and not based on the need to make a profit or generate rage clicks. The culture, the comedy, women's hour, thought for a day, are all part of the fabric great British culture everyone seems so worried about diluting. And outside of the UK, it's a brand that's known and respected worldwide. Cultural capital.

" in general, it all balances out"

No - that's like saying if a person abuses a child but donates a huge amount to charity it is OK because it balances out. Not an acceptable argument. The BBC I loved is long gone sadly. Unfortunately it is probably a reflection of the world we live it and there's nothing to be done about it. But any remedy must begin with recognition of the problem - none of this is forthcoming. Corruptio optimi pessima.

BaconCheeses · 11/11/2025 13:20

If the government think impartiality is important then they need to subsidise it.

You can't make people engage with BBC therefore they shouldn't be forced to pay.

If they are forced to pay, it's essentially a tax and IMO every bit of tax and spending should be accountable to questions like "is this the very best use of taxpayer money?" [ie could these pounds be better spent on treating serious childhood illnesses?]

OhDear111 · 11/11/2025 13:22

@Threefullskips It certainly is an acceptable argument because there are nuances and various arguments to be put forward. I’m happy that it balances out too. I’m happy that various contributors have different opinions as long as it’s not obvious rubbish. Freedom of speech means we don’t have exact balance all the time because with the public and different contributors, it’s impossible.

WalkDontWalk · 11/11/2025 13:23

How far right do you have to be to think that the BBC is left wing?

Shedmistress · 11/11/2025 13:25

It needs to crash and burn. Smug [redacted]s the lot of them.

MiddleChildX · 11/11/2025 13:26

Misla · 11/11/2025 12:35

I am so tired of the "You'll miss it when it's gone!" argument.

a) We don't have the choice as to whether to fund the BBC or not. If we, as individuals, don't pay for the BBC - we get prosecuted.

b) Other countries seem to cope. France? Germany? Canada? They all seem to cope without a state broadcaster that they are compelled to fund individually.

c) If you are setting yourself up as an impartial, authoritative source - you'd better act as one. Which means you cannot allow your organisation to be so biased that you can't even see it.

This is simply not true. It is entirely a choice whether to pay it or not. I have not paid for a tv licence for more than 10years. I do not watch live tv or stream BBC content. On a rare occasion I will watch Netflix or Amazon Prime which I am happy to pay a subscription for. This is a choice I make because I refuse to fund the BBC.
It is perfectly legal to not pay it. You cannot be prosecuted if you are not breaking a law 🤷🏻‍♀️

Staringintothevoid616 · 11/11/2025 13:26

The current management have raped the brand. Its agenda is to push pseudo liberal leftism it’s lied, bullied covered up heinous crimes. Its brainwashed people under the cover of it’s impartiality claim.

why would we mourn its passing

They've caused a huge amount of damage by acting as a mouthpiece for terrorism, refusing to publicise corrections but adding them as postscripts after publishing inflammatory misinformation. Their Arabic service employs literal terrorists and intentionally changes their English subtitles to sway opinion. They have spent hundreds and thousands of pounds burying a report on their institutional antisemitism, and ignored an open letter signed by hundreds of Jewish employees.

This.

Bloody trans nurse coverage. Sodding NHS are as captured as the bloody BBC putting men who pretend they are women first. So much gender crap they need to go.

Sorry I replied to someone else with my previous response.

I agree the Pro Pal pushing is awful, supporting terrorists is never a good look.

How did they think they could get away with the Trump tape being messed with. That was horrendous! Heads should roll.
