To never shop at Pets Corner again

I have a number of pets, I have to say mine aren't that bothered by fireworks, they seem to see the others are alright and all keep each other calm.

I'm not that bothered by neighbours having fireworks. If theyre big organised displays you see the advertising locally so know they might be louder, longer, brighter. If they are in homes then people tend to do what they can and let you know on Facebook. Maybe tighter regulation to stop yobs buying them to throw down the street. But my point is I'm not an expert in the subject and I dont know really whether we need change or not.

But. When you are the CEO of a pet company, making millions from "caring" about pets, I do think it is beyond hypocrisy to have a professional firework show in your garden and not tell animal owners locally so they can prepare.

The company Facebook page is building engagement by posting about the dangers of fireworks, all the while the CEO has a party that resulted in the death of a horse.

I won't be shopping there again, and it was my preferred pet shop.

You can't make millions from pet are and not care about pets. And for me that doesn't mean caring about your own pets, it means caring about all pets.

You absolutely can.

Its called conditioning.

You absolutely can't with some animals. Horses are a prey animal. They're hard wired to be startled by potentially dangerous things. Yes you can de-sensitise to some extent but even police horses will bolt in riots if they're overwhelmed.

He’s an idiot , it feels like a Gerald Ratner moment for those old enough to remember. I hope people vote with their feet

Ratner was exactly who sprang to mind for me as well. Most CEOs now go through training to avoid this sort of cock up

The guy's a walking cliche. Divorced and dating a young instagrammer. Hope his business tanks. Animals are living sentient beings. He could have quite easily done a silent firework display and he missed an opportunity to publicise and sell said fireworks too. I'll go out of my way to never shop there again, as will many, many thousands of others. Home goal there mate.

Imagine having to be trained to not be a massive hypocrite and tank your business.

Police horses are also pre-selected based on temperament - youre never going to be able to train every horse to cope with what they do, no matter how good the programme. Many also fail the training

If it is cruel to keep cats because they cannot be desensitised to human life, then you'd have to phase them out over time. Stop breeding, yes, and then just let them die off naturally.

Sorry, are you saying people should stop breeding cats, or housing existing ones, so we can have fireworks displays? And that then cats will just… naturally die off?

It’s the headline story on the daily Mail.

Oh well then panic over because by MN law, if it's in the Mail it can't possibly be true

JeminaTheGiantBear · 11/11/2025 08:39

Use a small local pet shop instead if you have one.
That way you’re supporting a local person with a local business and not lining the pockets of some mega rich privileged tit in a multi million pound mansion.

Good god I’m sick of the whinging about fireworks.

Grow up, desensitise your pets and stop whinging.

Ok, then instead of a pissy comment explain exactly how you would desensitise cows, horses, sheep et al? It’s not just pets ffs.

Exactly , remember the horse guards horses that bolted through London after builders rubble spooked them

Funnily enough they’re usually fine.

So you're still not going to explain these desentitising and conditioning techniques?

How do you propose to desensitise me? I’m autistic and I can’t cope with them. On 5th Nov fine - I has diazepam and I power through but the fireworks are still going on. How long am I supposed to cope with this for?

KimuraTan · 11/11/2025 08:46

JadeSquid · 11/11/2025 07:21

If the display was in early November then they should be expecting fireworks anyway

Yes, it’s Bonfire night and there will be some fireworks..but a huge 15 minute display to music?? I don’t think so.

The OP carefully states that Bonfire night is what it is but if you’re the CEO of a company that purports to care about pets then you ought to check if your conduct aligns with your company values.

That poor horse that died and its devastated owners 😢

I for one will be giving Pet’s Corner a miss. Plenty of other food brands around who don’t have a hypocritical CEO.

Would you like to explain how it's possible to desensitise livestock, wildlife and birds please?
We live in a farming community, and not only was the village like a warzone on the 5th, but the previous weekend and the following weekend were both just as bad. How can any of us prepare for this?

How do you suggest we do that with horses??
Bring me some of your expert tips please.
Your comment smacks of city ignorance.

wow, i’m sure they will really miss your custom, what a great fucking loss. Good luck finding somewhere as good to get your pet supplies.

I'd never heard of them but certainly wouldn't use them after hearing about this.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 11/11/2025 08:58

The thing about fireworks is they don’t HAVE to bang. They add the noise in iyswim. They could just as easily be pretty but not noisy and I don’t understand why we continue to make them loud.

MrsMitford3 · 11/11/2025 08:59

And who is running the de-sensitising programmes for the wild animals and birds??

I do not agree with private fireworks displays but understand they are legal-although I hope that changes.

If it was one night that would be manageable. Apparently Diwali has one night that the fireworks are meant to celebrate, halloween has now somehow become a fireworks night and Bonfire Night is one night but instead each has fireworks all around the date and it is getting out of hand.
There is no control over it at all.

We have had local fireworks every single night for about 3 weeks now.
Including last night.

Enough.
