To never shop at Pets Corner again

I have a number of pets, I have to say mine aren't that bothered by fireworks, they seem to see the others are alright and all keep each other calm.

I'm not that bothered by neighbours having fireworks. If theyre big organised displays you see the advertising locally so know they might be louder, longer, brighter. If they are in homes then people tend to do what they can and let you know on Facebook. Maybe tighter regulation to stop yobs buying them to throw down the street. But my point is I'm not an expert in the subject and I dont know really whether we need change or not.

But. When you are the CEO of a pet company, making millions from "caring" about pets, I do think it is beyond hypocrisy to have a professional firework show in your garden and not tell animal owners locally so they can prepare.

The company Facebook page is building engagement by posting about the dangers of fireworks, all the while the CEO has a party that resulted in the death of a horse.

I won't be shopping there again, and it was my preferred pet shop.

You can't make millions from pet are and not care about pets. And for me that doesn't mean caring about your own pets, it means caring about all pets.

wow, i’m sure they will really miss your custom, what a great fucking loss. Good luck finding somewhere as good to get your pet supplies.

I've never even heard of it and we've always been a multi pet household.

Good god I’m sick of the whinging about fireworks.

Grow up, desensitise your pets and stop whinging.

I appreciate you probably just don't understand but you are wrong. There are a raft of things you can try but often many pets will never be desensitised. And even if it was that easy for pets, we cannot desensitise wildlife.

Please think before you upset people. Seeing the distress animals feel is heartbreaking and this particular story ended in the death of a horse. Try to be a little more sensitive!

Pet Corner owner has entered the chat.

Mind you, I wouldn't be surprised if he were to become aware of the thread and threaten MNHQ with legal action to get it pulled. He seems like the sort of entitled man who might do that.

Smugzebra · 11/11/2025 09:06

I think he is probably a business man who cares only about profit. Probably not someone I would get on with but I guess people like him keep the economy going.
It would have been a great opportunity for him to showcase silent/low noise fireworks through.

Just wondering thought, the amount of complaints and drama around scared animals seems to be at ridiculously high levels this year. Local Facebook groups, WhatsApp...etc.

Anecdotally there doesn't seem to have been a massive increase in fireworks... Certainly not where I live anyway. I remember every pub having a bonfire with fireworks when I was a kid...

There has, however, been a massive spike in people complaining that their pets can't cope.

Are pets getting "weaker"? Are they getting treated more like children and shielded from things more? Are we just more bothered by our pets being sad? Are there just more pets nowadays? Maybe we just care about them more...

Not saying anything against fireworks OR scared pets (I feel bad for pets, I sort of enjoy fireworks... Just making an observation about pets seemingly lacking resilience)

elprup · 11/11/2025 09:07

@Smugzebra people do say that fireworks are louder than they used to be. Could that be why?

MrsMitford3 · 11/11/2025 09:08

There have def been more around me. Every night for 3 weeks means no respite at all.

Do you think it's easy to desensitise a horse? I took know people who have lost horses due to fireworks. Even with veterinary sedation, they get spooked and distressed, and it's not easy to manage half a tonne of flight animal in those circumstances.

And how the hell do you suggest people desensitise their pets against extremely loud sudden noise and flashes? Don't be ridiculous.

It's farcical that members of the public can buy and use bloody explosives in the first place, but at the very l set they can try to use them respectfully.

OneWildBiscuit · 11/11/2025 09:12

JadeSquid · 11/11/2025 07:51

Maybe it is cruel to keep them then.

Get a grip.

nosleepforme · 11/11/2025 09:13

If you’re talking about a regular neighbour I’d roll my eyes
but cos it’s a ceo of a pet care company, they need to be 1000x more careful

Our friends lost a foal this year. They were stabled but the shock was too much, the vet had sedated them but the poor thing just stood and shook, two days later it was still the same, not eating or drinking and still shaking. They said had she had just shut down from shock, so they had to be euthanised. They’d done all they could to desensitise, loud radio, food etc.
This was rural, massive garden display about 800m from the stables, pretty similar to the pet shop man.
I don’t understand why they have to be so loud, if you're there watching them, why do you need people miles away to be able to hear them.

They are hafrdly the only pet store are they?

I use them a lot but not any more. Absolutely disgusted with the dickhead owner

ForLoveNotMoney · 11/11/2025 08:03

My horse was injured this year because of fireworks. I’m now faced with a huge vet bill, a broken horse and also a bill to repair my fence after horse blindly galloped through it in terror.

You can’t desensitise horses. Fireworks are completely pointless in my opinion

I'm sorry to hear this. My horse is, thankfully, not too bothered, but other horses on the yard were turning themselves inside out with stress, despite calming supplements, keeping the barn doors closed and playing loud music. I know someone who lost their horse a couple of years ago when he galloped in a blind panic through a fence and broke a leg.

So bloody needless.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 11/11/2025 09:17

Our local wildlife rescue and rehab centre listed the animals they’ve lost this week- animals that were almost ready for release after weeks of rehab but died of stress on bonfire night.

JadeSquid · 11/11/2025 08:03

If it is cruel to keep cats because they cannot be desensitised to human life, then you'd have to phase them out over time. Stop breeding, yes, and then just let them die off naturally.

Really, I'm just embarrassed for you at this point. Maybe just stop with the facile, ignorant comments.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 11/11/2025 09:19

Given that we are apparently poverty stricken as well, the amount of money that went up in smoke this week isn’t funny.

When I was a child, population density wasn’t as great, fewer people had fewer fireworks, and there wasn’t the barrage that we get now.

It’s just so unnecessary.

OneWildBiscuit · 11/11/2025 09:23

Really? Tell that to the many farmers I know who have a very different experience/opinion.

There has been a massive increase in fireworks where I live. I moved here 8 years ago and the first 3 years there were no fireworks at all. The next couple of years there were one or two houses who had fireworks but not that loud.

Last year there were more but still nothing major and only over 3 nights. This year there have been fireworks every night from 31st October until 9th November.

The weekend before bonfire night was quite noisy, the Monday and Tuesday the same. Bonfire night was pretty bad with loads of really noisy fireworks and they didn't stop totally until gone midnight. Thursday and Friday not too bad but then Saturday the 8th was bad and Sunday the 9th was very bad with at least 4 houses very close by having loud and lengthy fireworks. Quite who has them on the 9th I don't understand.

They'll soon notice when a large number stop giving them their custom. There are plenty of better pet businesses, so it's hardly going to be a push to find somewhere else to shop.

You can't desensitise horses against fireworks. Same with lots of rescued animals. You don't always have to be selfish and an idiot you know. Have a day off.

Yes you can!

The guy's a walking cliche. Divorced and dating a young instagrammer. Hope his business tanks. Animals are living sentient beings. He could have quite easily done a silent firework display and he missed an opportunity to publicise and sell said fireworks too. I'll go out of my way to never shop there again, as will many, many thousands of others. Home goal there mate.

Yes I agree he could have done a silent one and even sold silent fireworks! That would have been a great business idea.

Edinburgh zoo lost several red pandas last year due to the stress of the fireworks going off nearby.

How do you desensitise horses?

Grow up, learn about the countryside and stop weighing in when you know nothing about the subject.
