Spiders

Just been to the loo to do what I needed to do - just sat down to do it - turned around to flush and there was an enormous spider in there - how did it get there - flushed about 6 times but the bugger kept on moving - shoved bleach down there in the end which seems to have sorted it - hate spiders - was I unreasonable to bleach it?

Depends on who you ask and where they stand with keeping animals safe.

honestly I’d be more scared about myself than anything… you weren’t unreasonable, but I’d say you would have been if you hadn’t even flushed it beforehand..

are you living in Australia? All my Aussie friends tell me horror stories like this…

Fight or flight instinct kicks in. You fear it so you killed it.

I mean..yes? No? I dont really know. Its your fear level..

Im afraid of spiders but i usually get a glass and out them out side (usually while screaming the entire time) because as much as I dislike them I HATE flies even more and would rather they stick around to catch those fuckers.

Pollqueen · 10/11/2025 20:12

Yes of course you were unreasonable to bleach it. That's just downright cruel

No I’m in the UK - was in Australia many years ago - in the bush - was warned about the spiders there - I usually use a super catcher and release them in the garden but this one took me by surprise - they seem to be getting bigger!

I live in the UK countryside and we had some huge ones, one ran across the bed one night, horrific!
I looked online and have used lemons and have only had one smallish one since. I cut them up to the size you would put in a drink, put them on window cills or bedside tables, never on the floor, replace when they go hard.

gosh same.. I’ve planning on moving to Australia but am terrified of spiders…

They are! I saw one the other day the size of my hand with legs the size of everyone on of my fingers, boy, was I scared.

3hairspastfreckle · 10/11/2025 20:23

So you were moving away from it (finished on the toilet) and it didnt lunge at you, but you attacked it until it died

Most people are only scared of spiders because they are built up in the media as something scary (Arachnophobia and constant articles about how to keep them out etc) and yet, for the most part, the spiders we have are harmless to humans

JudgeBread · 10/11/2025 20:23

I feel like bleaching the poor thing was overkill, what a horrible way to die. But I'm firmly in the "live in harmony alongside them" camp when it comes to spiders. They keep my house fly and moth free 🤷‍♀️

Yes - I saw one in my bedroom yesterday but couldn’t catch it - I know it’s here somewhere!

They disappear… you see it for one second, as soon as you as much blink they’re gone! They are so small, and realistically harmless but Jesus they are scary creatures…

one day it will pop up 100x bigger… always seems to happen to me… I’m sure of it- either that or they’ve got siblings somewhere…

BaconCheeses · 10/11/2025 20:27

You're pathetic.

It's about an inch big and just minding it's own business.

Imagine actually being killed just for living because someone else is so pathetic.

I hate them but sadly yes, bleaching one is very cruel.
My eldest DD doesn't mind them - she's extremely good at trapping them in a glass and carrying them into the garden. They're quite territorial so we know they'll make their way back into the house eventually but at least I can sleep that night knowing whichever large one was exiled won't be indoors for a bit!

Are you ok with rats too?

A couple of years ago I lived in Hampshire in a wooden built property from about 1930 with wood on the outside and would on the inside and the whole house was riddled with false widow spiders. They're the ones were the skull on the back.
One of them bit my middle DC on the ankle when in bed and the day I told the landlord he had to do something was the day I woke up with three of them crawling on my chest when I woke up.
I could go outside with a torch at night and count maybe 30 or 40 on the outside walls and there was nothing to stop them coming in to the inside because they were living in the walls.
There is patience and then there's fear.
False widows are probably the worst spiders we have in Britain, mild relative of black widows in Australia.

Sounds terrible - I’d have freaked out

This. ^ Vile thing to do. Imagine coming onto Mumsnet and asking 'was I unreasonable to have thrown bleach over a spider?!' Hmm

I fucking depair of some people on here sometimes, I swear to God!

100% this, and I can think of a lot more say too, but I will get the post deleted! 😠

Trepidfox · 10/11/2025 20:57

I feel your pain OP my anxiety levels go through the roof this time of year, hate the buggers. I've spent over an hour staring at a huge monster once wondering how I can get a glass over it so I can breath again. Hate killing them but if it's them or me I am afraid it will be them!

Theunamedcat · 10/11/2025 21:03

Was it actually in the toilet?

So what do you want to get deleted - your quote or the thread deleted? What has happened to free speak - I don’t like spiders - they give me the creeps - I’m sure I’m ok with things your not - stop being so dramatic

Are you ok with rats too?

What does that even mean?

Are you trying to compare humane pest control done by professionals using professional tools to you squirting some bleach at a harmless spider because you're scared of it?

And then you were so proud you felt like starting a "funny" mumsnet post with the hope everyone would lolz with you?

You're pathetic.

SpiceGhoul · 10/11/2025 21:04

I have an irrational fear of spiders, I woke up with one on my face a few years ago and had to be prescribed sedatives to be able to sleep . Even then I had spider filled nightmares for weeks.

I don't think the people who say how cruel it is etc understand how terrifying it can be for those with phobias. There's absolutely no way I could capture one and put it outside etc luckily I have 2 cats and regularly use deterrent sprays, peppermint candles and rarely see them although I know statistically they're here somewhere.

Lonelycrab · 10/11/2025 21:06

Spiders are good, and misunderstood.

If we were in Australia then perhaps not

But leave them be, help them. They catch the bad insects and won’t bother you at all.

SpiceGhoul · 10/11/2025 21:08

I also don't understand how people say they're more scared of us than we are them. Ok then why is he crawling over my face?!
