Spiders

Just been to the loo to do what I needed to do - just sat down to do it - turned around to flush and there was an enormous spider in there - how did it get there - flushed about 6 times but the bugger kept on moving - shoved bleach down there in the end which seems to have sorted it - hate spiders - was I unreasonable to bleach it?

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/11/2025 21:11

As much as I don’t like spiders I don’t kill them

drowning it in bleach was mean

NoMorePleaseNow · 10/11/2025 21:11

We use indorex to repel them but it doesn't seem to have worked this year as we've seen some big live ones

Concretejungle1 · 10/11/2025 21:12

Im terrified of spiders, but no i think yabu. I think what you did was awful. I try really hard not to kill them, if i do i feel really bad, You don’t throw bleach over them Sad
you asked if ywbu but i i’m not sure you really want to hear you if you are.

ICantBeDoingWithThat · 10/11/2025 21:12

Are you sure it didn't fall out of your pants, OP? 🕷

Gettingbysomehow · 10/11/2025 21:15

I never see any the cats get to them first and I live in the countryside.
I have the odd spindly cellar spider but that's it.

Gettingbysomehow · 10/11/2025 21:17

P.S I think you arachnophobes moving to Oz are insane. You realise how big those bastards get? I lived in the tropics for 5 years and they were the size of dinner plates and in the house all the time. Brrrrrrr.

Concretejungle1 · 10/11/2025 21:17

SpiceGhoul · 10/11/2025 21:04

I have an irrational fear of spiders, I woke up with one on my face a few years ago and had to be prescribed sedatives to be able to sleep . Even then I had spider filled nightmares for weeks.

I don't think the people who say how cruel it is etc understand how terrifying it can be for those with phobias. There's absolutely no way I could capture one and put it outside etc luckily I have 2 cats and regularly use deterrent sprays, peppermint candles and rarely see them although I know statistically they're here somewhere.

Edited

I had one fall on my head, crawl over me in bed, fall on my face in bed, i scream every time. I have to get a family member to get them after ive attempted the spider catcher ( or if im too scared).
I’ve even gotten work colleagues to come to my office to come get them out my office, so yes, i live with the fear. I’d never pour bleach over a living thing though.

whyisnothingsimple · 10/11/2025 21:18

BaconCheeses · 10/11/2025 21:04

What does that even mean?

Are you trying to compare humane pest control done by professionals using professional tools to you squirting some bleach at a harmless spider because you're scared of it?

And then you were so proud you felt like starting a "funny" mumsnet post with the hope everyone would lolz with you?

You're pathetic.

.So what is humane killing? - How humane is putting poison down to kill rats? Just because someone is paid to do it, doesn’t mean it’s humane . Professional ? No they are just getting the job done. It wasn’t a proud post - just a sitting on the loo and trying to get rid of a spider !

RuncibleSpoons · 10/11/2025 21:18

Yes, you were unreasonable and pointlessly cruel. I hate people that kill spiders.

AlexisP90 · 10/11/2025 21:29

Ive never been a love all things person but a few years ago we were having some mice issues (repairs to the kitchen and flooring up was how they were getting in - it was fixing an under floor leak)

I remember not being able to sleep or eat with thinking of them coming into the house and was googling all sorts of solutions

We luckily got the work done quickly and they never came back but ill never forgot what my MIL (who im not the biggest fan of) said to me
" They are just looking for food and shelter like we all are"

Now Im still no Dr Dolittle or particularly love animals but it did get to my heart a little that one.

The spider was flushed down the loo several times - already in bowl - it was struggling so bleached it - normally I’d use a spider catcher - this wasn’t appropriate

Absolutely - I totally agree - but not down my loo - it’s mine - as I said up thread - i use a spider catcher but this one had already been tainted by me and would be flushed !

circling back to your rat and spider comparison first, can you tell me why you might need to kill a harmless spider?

Other than being pathetic.

AgentPidge · 10/11/2025 22:36

Yes, you were unreasonable, ridiculous and cruel. People seem so detached from wildlife in this country. Educate yourself. Modern homes are like deserts for spiders so they are often trying to find water. DH puts down jam jar lids with tiny drops of water for them! Which is going a tad too far, I think. But I tend to leave them alone to catch the flies.

DBSFstupid · 10/11/2025 22:50

whyisnothingsimple · 10/11/2025 20:24

Yes - I saw one in my bedroom yesterday but couldn’t catch it - I know it’s here somewhere!

What a cruel dreadful death you inflicted.
I wouldn't have had the nerve to post this tbh.
Please don't do the same to the one in your bedroom.
I'm scared of Spiders but I never kill them.

What do you mean 'it wasn't appropriate'? You could have tried some other means, ie picking it up gently with lots of tissue.

whyisnothingsimple · 10/11/2025 21:04

So what do you want to get deleted - your quote or the thread deleted? What has happened to free speak - I don’t like spiders - they give me the creeps - I’m sure I’m ok with things your not - stop being so dramatic

Stop being dramatic? Wow, pot kettle black, and actually WOW to the fact that you're not even CLOSE to admitting what a vile thing you did. Have a word with yourself!

Oh and yes, I DO get dramatic when I see or hear of pure cruelty to an innocent living thing, for NO REASON WHATSOEVER. You're not even sorry are you? I despair for humanity, I really do.

DBSFstupid · 10/11/2025 22:57

BatchCookBabe · 10/11/2025 20:50

This. ^ Vile thing to do. Imagine coming onto Mumsnet and asking 'was I unreasonable to have thrown bleach over a spider?!' Hmm

I fucking depair of some people on here sometimes, I swear to God!

👏👏👏

I find it inexplicable that not only did the OP do this horrific thing to this innocent spider, but also (despite all the posts telling her how digusting and what she did was,) she is doubling down and claiming what she did is fine and acceptable, and anyone who is angry about it is 'dramatic' or 'hysterical.' Confused

I don't think that people understand the extent of the fear and horror experienced by some phobics, me amongst them.
I could no more pick up a spider, with tissue, a spider catcher or a shovel, than I could hold my hand in a candle flame or put out my own eye.
The amount of dread and watchfulness that I experience at this time of year affects my whole life and well being.
I would do anything, and I mean anything to get rid of the things, no matter how cruel or unreasonable, I don't fucking care.
I wish to god that I could be otherwise.

monty2020 · 10/11/2025 23:12

Grow up, killing something because you don’t like the look of something a fraction of your size . Awfully cruel way to kill it too .

I'm petrified of spiders so I do get it but I just cannot inflict a death - and a cruel death at that - on a living creature.

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 10/11/2025 23:23

We're approaching mid November, I thought spider season was over!!! 😫😫😫😫😫

We had 3 quite large bastards in quick succession this season but thankfully it was DH who saw them each time not me. Not many Steves though (Steve is the one name for all the cellar spiders, who we like because they get the large bastards so yay Steve) We have 2 cats but they do bugger all.

We had some fairly good peppermint spray but decided to get indorex on the doors after 3 x bastards and that (touch wood) stopped them in their tracks.

Heyhelga · 11/11/2025 06:46

I suppose it's no different to spraying fly spray over a fly, which I'm sure is something most people do guilt free including those up in arms on here. I always find it odd how people have selective outrage for zapping one living creature to the next.
