Frankly, I don't think AIBU at all, but feel free to contradict if you think i am.

I only use Facebook to keep up with friends and acquaintances, and sometimes to watch crafting videos.

It's bad enough all the fake animal rescue / animals saving children AI slop videos, and the "art" and "music" generated entirely by algorithms. I cross reference anything that looks dodgy.

But today I came across a video that seems to show people in an official looking US legal setting, showing people, average looking citizens, all down on the floor restrained with purportedly armed ICE agents standing over them. The caption was something to do with filibustering and the shut down.

I've done a quick poke around the Internet and obviously there's no other evidence that this is anything other than fake.

I just don't get it. Well, I'm not that naive, I do. I'm just sick of it, sick of not being able to trust anything much I see because the faking is getting so scarily good.

Sorry, I just needed a rant.

Anyone remember when we use to say “a photo never lies”? I miss those days.

Yes, vividly remember a picture of the Nazi's burning books as an example of the expression. Would we believe the same now? I personally think the controversy around the Gaza genocide is evidence that no, many people do not believe what we see any more.

Bjorkdidit · 11/11/2025 14:33

Well Facebook seems to think that the thing I'm most interested in is pet skunks and skunk rescue, which I thought was quite random and a bit odd as Ive never shown an interest in skunks as far as can recall.

I mentione this to DP and he said that pet skunks were a thing. I've not thought any more about it until now and I'm now wondering if this is AI that has fooled us both?

YANBU I see it on TikTok all the time, have to double-check a lot of videos now to make sure it's not AI. I saw one user point out a video was AI and someone responded 'who cares? It's still funny' - no it's not, it's just slop thrown up to generate views and likes without actually putting in any effort or work.

I've rejoined a writing community and although it hasn't happened to me yet it's easy to throw around 'oh you use AI for your writing' comments even if it's not true.

I hate it - I hate the AI overview on Google and don't get me started on Chat-GPT or whatever it's called. My friend started an office job last year and she was like 'oh yeah I use it for emails when I don't know how to word it'. I started my office job several years ago and like anything learning to write professional emails is a skill, one that she's not developing because she's using AI to do it for her 😭

I feel sorry for the next generations. Are they ever going to experience being part of a grass roots organic sub-culture as they figure out their identities and likes and dislikes, and find an "authentic tribe"? Or are they just going to absorb whatever TikTok or Instagram spoon feeds them on the basis of monetisation, synthetic in every way? And will they even care?

@MistressoftheDarkSide Tribes are online though. I was invited to something hobby related through social media, and I would say the group was predominantly aged 18 - 20 with about three forty somethings who actually went.

I didn't go, couldn't be arsed with the travel, but the organiser said to me that it got discussed (being raised to be chronically online and the whole education system pushing you to it) and it was one of the reasons they wanted to meet up in real life.

Next bit of positivity - one of the AI workers I know gave a talk at a sixth form college recently. He was annoyed because some of the kids were so horrified at what was happening to creativity and artistry. I was relieved to hear that 😂

I was also invited to a Taylor Swift fan thing and stupidly didn't go because I was thinking I might be the oldest person there. Then I saw the pictures. I think it was a range from 20 to 70. They all seem to have had a lovely time. I do think I would've enjoyed that. They've got a private group on discord now.

I can't really be bothered downloading more stuff but it is very much a private group - that's why they wanted to come off social media. My main contact that still messages me through Twitter occasionally so hopefully they'll meet up again.

So it isn't really that different than a group of people that you know and go to the pub with - or poetry readings or outward bound expeditions or whatever your thing is.

It's encouraging to see that people will find a way to connect on a human level.

maybe the generation after that so the kids who are maybe 10 years old now - that's a bigger worry. They won't know if they're meeting a real person or an AI bot trying to lure them to something.

Dartmoorcheffy · 11/11/2025 16:50

I find it scary and worrying. Its hard to believe anything that you see and read on social media now. I think AI is a very dangerous thing that will lead to tragedy and will be abused .

MattCauthon · 11/11/2025 16:52

I loev AI but I completely agree with videos. I clicked on link the other day excited to finally see the trailer for the Henry Cavill Highlander movie.... Fake, AI. Sigh.

Bjorkdidit · 11/11/2025 18:26

I've just remembered that a few months ago I was fooled by a trailer for a Pixar film about Sphinx cats, I was really looking forwards to a film it turns out doesn't exist.

But there must be examples of more serious issues about AI. What if people use it to try and prove they were elsewhere when they committed a crime? Or that it was someone else who did it not them?

Bearing in mind that sci fi has accurately predicted much in regard to technological advancement, this series made my blood run cold. Yes, it's fiction. At the moment.... but......😳

The amount of people commenting on these videos thinking they are real is startling

Exactly this. Especially older people. What to me is blindingly obviously AI to them they take at face value which is shocking.

foghead · 11/11/2025 18:37

We can escape this. Switch it off.

Yes, especially older people. My mum included! They then go off taking the video as reality. I think AI will make our brains evolve! Into what is another thing 😐

On the plus side, we will all get that time scrolling back if no one uses social media. I am hopeful we might start actually talking to each other again and making more of an effort to see people face to face, maybe the high streets will make a comeback?

Ooh I hope you're right! I've been wanting to spend less time on social media for years but found it too addictive. However, it's become so shite lately I've stopped wanting to go on it as much, hope it continues.....
