So sick of AI generated fake videos on social media etc

Frankly, I don't think AIBU at all, but feel free to contradict if you think i am.

I only use Facebook to keep up with friends and acquaintances, and sometimes to watch crafting videos.

It's bad enough all the fake animal rescue / animals saving children AI slop videos, and the "art" and "music" generated entirely by algorithms. I cross reference anything that looks dodgy.

But today I came across a video that seems to show people in an official looking US legal setting, showing people, average looking citizens, all down on the floor restrained with purportedly armed ICE agents standing over them. The caption was something to do with filibustering and the shut down.

I've done a quick poke around the Internet and obviously there's no other evidence that this is anything other than fake.

I just don't get it. Well, I'm not that naive, I do. I'm just sick of it, sick of not being able to trust anything much I see because the faking is getting so scarily good.

Sorry, I just needed a rant.

It's not only AI generated videos, but the use of a real video then lying about what it shows. eg the claim that the Chinese are making artificial eggs. A friend told me about it and I said that was impossible and didn't believe it.

She insisted it was true, as she had seen the video of them inserting the yolks etc plus her daughter had sent it to warn her. She forwarded the video to me and I did a quick google search which labelled it false (they were manufacturing realistic looking toy eggs), and said also that this story is now an Urban Myth.

The thing is, as this deception becomes more widespread, we will become skeptical of everything, as pp have said.

The amount of people commenting on these videos thinking they are real is startling

The problem is you risk offending someone if they are real. There's one about a minor celeb where she looks like she is drunk and saying things very unlike her way of talking, but people are using it (and posting it on here) as a way to show her character is different to what we were shown on a certain show. So we are caught in a "do you believe the show edit or do you believe her 'home video'?" situation. If I went into the comments and suggested it was AI all of her haters would scoff and say it was my bias.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/jul/14/an-ai-generated-band-got-1m-plays-on-spotify-now-music-insiders-say-listeners-should-be-warned

Why more people aren't up on arms about the actual existential threat potential to humanity i have no idea.

But on so many threads that discuss this there's a weird laissez faire attitude, or outright insults of heresy for questioning it, and this grim acceptance that resistance is futile.

Oh that's horrendous!

I'm so gutted :(

All the hard work that goes into music and acting will be swiftly wiped out.

This world is going to become somewhere I really don't want to be!

humblebea · 10/11/2025 16:28

I tried to show my child a photo of a platypus on google but so many of the tops hits were AI I just had to give up!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 10/11/2025 16:29

I've been trying to figure out this whole Trump / BBC editing fiasco that's kicked off. Given the utter shite that the Tangerine scream comes out with on the daily, it's utterly bizarre all round. From what I gather Panorama edited out 40 odd minutes of ramble that didn't seem to change much of the thrust of the speech in question, however, I can see that even this, no AI needed is part of the problem. And I'm no big fan of any of the major broadcasters by any stretch.

A few years back it was revealed that a correspondent allegedly in a war zone being shown behind him, was actually in front of a green screen.

The film "Wag the Dog" is on a long list of fiction that has foreshadowed reality to an alarming degree.

@MistressoftheDarkSide i'm all right thank you

Thinking of finding an intensive hobby because I can't seem to get into TV or books anymore and I obviously don't want to engage with all the crap online

I'm in a social group now and we make a point of going to pub music night. It's not very good, but we know they're real!

@shuddacuddadidnt I wouldn't be surprised if somebody really was making synthetic edible eggs in that way though

i'm losing weight and I'm also having a rethink about what I eat. I hadn't been too worried about chemicals in the past, but I feel as if we're in a new world of chemicals, if that makes sense.

someone's already mentioned about living on a farm. I was away earlier this year, in England. I was in a shop and some ducklings came in.

no, this is not the beginning of a joke 😂🐥

I told the lady behind the counter and she said "oh they like to come in. Their parents usually come and get them. if they don't, we'll carry them back to the pond." my mum later said to me that she felt the country was going to divide into people who want to live in the place where ducklings can wander into a shop, and people who just want to live in AI generated globoslop.

in reality, the former will be far more expensive than the latter. Which does make me think about how I should plan my life.

Tiebiter · 10/11/2025 16:31

My colleague showed me one about a physio hitting people with rocks. They thought it was hilarious. It was bizarre. Just because the person in the video is ai generated how does that make watching it ok? It was more snuff film than Tom and Jerry.

shuddacuddadidnt · 10/11/2025 17:10

I wouldn't be surprised if somebody really was making synthetic edible eggs in that way though

One of the points made in the fact checker article was that as the cost of manufacturing edible artificial eggs would be far greater than the cost of a real egg, there is no reason to create artificial ones.

Bagamama · 10/11/2025 17:14

Yanbu. And the number of people who don't realise it's AI and can't spot ChatGPT either 😬.

Cupofteaforyou · 10/11/2025 17:16

YNBU

I follow horses and bird watching and i get the most ludicrous AI pics and videos. OK not so bad in the scheme of things, but it irritates the frog out of me. No, that's not a golden eagle on the high street!

You're right to be worried about banking apps etc. Eventually they'll all be hacked and, i hope, high street banks come back!

EmeraldRoulette · 10/11/2025 17:30

@Cupofteaforyou "No, that's not a golden eagle on the high street!"

thank goodness for that, if it ate the ducklings on the way to the shop that would be really sad. 😂

GentleSheep · 10/11/2025 17:33

Yes you're right to be fed up with it OP. Fake AI videos and pictures are becoming more and more common. At first they were really easy to spot but not any longer. It's very worrying. I know several people who do digital art and they say AI is wrecking their industry and putting them out of work.

Ella31 · 10/11/2025 18:16

I miss being awed as well. Remember those days when you saw something that looked amazing or cool. Now it's all fake or you are doubting it.

TidyCyan · 10/11/2025 18:32

I hate it. All of it. I hate that people are asking ChatGPT to design them a bedroom, what messages from their partner mean, and how to do their jobs. I hate that people Google stuff and just trust the AI summary when it's usually based off one web result and incorrect.

It's going to be so easy to win elections in the future with a few carefully-placed fake videos for the hard of thinking.

Timelineuk · 10/11/2025 18:50

At the beginning of this year Starmer said AI would be injected in other mainline of the UK same time as Trump announced 500 billion AI industry with Larry Ellison and Theil. Musk then announced AI would do 80% of jobs and the challenge for humans would be find a purpose. Whatever he means I don’t know exactly but he didn’t seem optimistic for humans but he’s optimistic for AI

i can’t believe how many people can’t see a fake happy birthday picture of an old woman saying no one wishing me happy birthday and everybody commenting. It’s Pathetic if one can’t tell what’s real or not but I’m starting to see its getting harder

Tiebiter · 10/11/2025 19:00

What I don't get is that generative ai scrapes websites for the data it uses to generate. But now people use generative ai instead of looking at a website.

So presumably ai will just eat itself

GentleSheep · 10/11/2025 19:13

Musk then announced AI would do 80% of jobs and the challenge for humans would be find a purpose

Such a huge red flag right there! Anything that removes humanity's purpose can't be a good thing.

IBorAlevels · 10/11/2025 19:27

But it is at the point we don't really know if it is real people commenting or just bots stirring up hatred/fear. Every year we get the same Poppy crap about intolerance and I see the same idiotic comments swallowing it but surely by now everyone knows that no one objects to anyone wearing a poppy?

Sadly it’s happening at rapid pace, this is very sobering.

Someone, please tell me that the panda who was really shocked when her baby panda sneezed is real?

JillMW · 10/11/2025 22:26

I don’t watch any videos unless from a reliable source except craft ones. I may soon have to stop the craft ones, they have been so useful for me learning skills but lately the ai has meant they are completely unreliable.

bananapies · 10/11/2025 22:41

It going to break up a few people.

Classiccar1 · 10/11/2025 22:47

My wife's friends are constantly sending her AI videos of cute animals and babies. They think they are lovely - I hate them!

So you don’t have a problem with a state broadcaster splicing together two sentences that were 50 minutes apart in a speech to misrepresent what the most powerful person in the world was saying? Really?

elprup · 10/11/2025 22:54

Kind of ironic that you’ve started a thread about how you’re sick of AI generated fake videos but are perfectly happy for humans to do the same 🤣
