So sick of AI generated fake videos on social media etc

Frankly, I don't think AIBU at all, but feel free to contradict if you think i am.

I only use Facebook to keep up with friends and acquaintances, and sometimes to watch crafting videos.

It's bad enough all the fake animal rescue / animals saving children AI slop videos, and the "art" and "music" generated entirely by algorithms. I cross reference anything that looks dodgy.

But today I came across a video that seems to show people in an official looking US legal setting, showing people, average looking citizens, all down on the floor restrained with purportedly armed ICE agents standing over them. The caption was something to do with filibustering and the shut down.

I've done a quick poke around the Internet and obviously there's no other evidence that this is anything other than fake.

I just don't get it. Well, I'm not that naive, I do. I'm just sick of it, sick of not being able to trust anything much I see because the faking is getting so scarily good.

Sorry, I just needed a rant.

Completely agree

Soon no video will be trusted, no news story believed.

People will just believe what they want as anything else will be accused of being AI.

Bad actors are weaponising the technology to sow discord and hatred.

This may come across as hyperbolic but it could be the end of democracy.

BorgQueen · 10/11/2025 15:33

Basically, if you don’t see something in person, with your own two eyes, you can’t believe it, even on reputable news sites.
I’m sick of explaining to my 72 year old Sister that the stuff she is showing me, is fake.

barskits · 10/11/2025 15:39

There are only so many videos of wild animals bouncing on trampolines you can stomach.

And as for the ones with a toddler on a verandah somewhere, being stalked by a bear / leopard / crocodile / other predator and the cat comes to the child's rescue and chases off the intruder. There are only so many eye rolls I can manage in one day without giving myself a headache.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 10/11/2025 15:48

If I adjust my tinfoil hat slightly, I wonder if it is just the law of unintended consequences / end stage capitalism, or if there is a sinister plot to drive us all mad.

It feels like psychological warfare, it's not that easy to cut off from it entirely.

If they announced WW3 had started in traditional way, I'd have to out and check in person before I'd believe it.

And this is the danger I think, one day it will be important to give out some vital piece of information and it could have devastating consequences because the Internet has cried wolf too many times, and we can't trust the source. Gah, stop the world, I wanna get off.

This is Sora in action. If you want to see some commentary on it there are some good youtube videos with people discussing it.

It is scarily realistic now and a lot of people are taken in by them and assume it's real.

ResusciAnnie · 10/11/2025 15:52

I only use Facebook to keep up with friends and acquaintances

  1. thats what it’s for
  2. if you’re only doing that, why are you seeing any videos?

Just text your friends and don’t go on SM.

ACynicalDad · 10/11/2025 15:53

At the moment I still think it's possible to spot, I'm concerned at the next generation or the one after that.

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 10/11/2025 15:54

Agree. It started with the AI videos on the likes of YouTube being obvious. Now it's harder to tell with some of them and they're growing in number. They'll probably categorise them eventually with a tag that indicates they're AI. It's probably because it's all very new

bathroomadviceneeded · 10/11/2025 15:55

I’m doing an AI training course at work at the moment (education sector) and after every session I tell DH that I want to buy a farm, milk cows, grow vegetables, live off the land, and basically become Amish.
I am really concerned about what AI is going to do to truth and propaganda in the future. Not to mention the world of employment that my DC are going to face in 20 years’ time.

IBorAlevels · 10/11/2025 15:56

The internet is eating itself. It won't be useable in a few years because no one will know what is real and what isn't.

Banking apps asking for security questions freak me out to the point I now just order a new one when it's been cloned so I don't risk my info, I don't trust many news outlets to have used an actual person as a journo, I can't believe anything I see on sites like Pinterest because there are so many scam companies selling things that don't exist just to get your bank details...even on here it's obviously full of bots and AI generated responses that I might be the only human being on here.

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 10/11/2025 15:57

The amount of people commenting on these videos thinking they are real is startling

The videos are plastered across one's feed in the form of reels etc. Some human generated content is of interest, as i say, art and crafting things.

I do keep in private contact with a select few people, wider circle it's a case of checking nobody's died etc. Also, people are understandably reticent about handing out their phone numbers left right and centre.

The point is, we are service users. We shouldn't be guinea pigs for tech bros or bad actors with dubious batshit agendas. There should be a happy medium with all this stuff, there is a value in the ability to keep up with people, hence "social" media. However all these platforms have gone past that now.

It’s getting very scary. They’re getting more and more realistic. Have you seen the one of the queen (E2) knocking on someone’s door and asking to use the toilet? It’s quite explicit. They’ve cloned her voice and it sounds and looks exactly like her.

It is slightly uncanny valley but really it’s only because you know that wouldn’t happen that you know it’s not real. Humanity is in trouble I think.

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 10/11/2025 16:01

The younger generation don't seem as concerned or the ones I know anyway. They need to alert viewers to which ones are AI videos fast

I was literally talking to a guy about this today and he said he and his entire group of friends don't read the news any more because there's simply too much going on and it damages their mental health. I could see his point. It's exactly what the aim is though, for us to stop listening and trusting what is reality. So dystopian.

EmeraldRoulette · 10/11/2025 16:03

@IBorAlevels sorry to be thick
What is being cloned and what are you ordering a new one of please?

It isn't a coincidence it hasn't been used to help humanity with healthcare first, for example. They want to profit from us all first then drive us into needing it more before finding the most profitable way to sell it to the healthcare providers.
It's the least humanitarian way they could have possibly done it.

EmeraldRoulette · 10/11/2025 16:05

@MistressoftheDarkSide hiiiii 🥰

MidnightPatrol · 10/11/2025 16:05

Agree! Twitter had already gotten very weird post-Musk with right wing, racist, violent, pornogrpahic content etc.

But now the other half of bizarre AI videos.

It’s going to be the end of social media - what’s the point of it, when it’s all fake designed to stoke outrage and clicks.

summerlovingvibes · 10/11/2025 16:06

Totally agree.
It's so sad that now every video I watch, I question. I don't want to have to sift through and try to work out what's real or not.

I hate hate HATE it.

I honestly wish AI had never been invented, it is destroying lots of things. Last night my husband played me a new song. I loved it! And then he tells me it's AI generated, and not actually a real artist.

The music and film industry is going to be destroyed.

Such sad times.

YANBU. I have deleted all my social media accounts and this is the reason why. There is so much AI bullshit sloshing around, and even thought I (think) I am rarely fooled by it, it makes me despair for mankind to see how many people buy it.

Facebook and Instagram both have algorithms which mean the majority of what you see isn't from your friends or people you follow, which means they hardly even count as social media any more, really. They're just basins of AI slop and people arguing in the comments.

I haven't missed it at all since I deleted my accounts!

Oh, I have been served "new music" so many times only to check it out on YouTube to discover it's AI generated.

Saw a story about a whole band that didn't exist the other day. I shall try and find the story.

Why more people aren't up on arms about the actual existential threat potential to humanity i have no idea.

But on so many threads that discuss this there's a weird laissez faire attitude, or outright insults of heresy for questioning it, and this grim acceptance that resistance is futile.

An AI-generated band got 1m plays on Spotify. Now music insiders say listeners should be warned

The Velvet Sundown released two albums before admitting their music, images and backstory were created by AI

Not to mention the world of employment

Leaders and commentators and researchers are already talking about AI leading to a 3 day working week or much shorter working hours like a few hours a day in the future, so that as the work needing to be done gets less, it is divided out more equally, so everyone has something to do and earn. Also talk of universal basic income.

(If you put my paragraph, which I completely wrote myself btw, into ChatGPT it will give you loads more info on that and you can ask it how true this is and what the evidence is! 😀)
