Was Carrie Bradshaw right to tell Berger her opinions on 'the scrunchie'

'No self respecting woman who works at W magazine and lives on Perry Street would be caught at a hip, downtown restaurant wearing a scrunchie!'

Berger was a miserable bastard anyway but she did hurt his ego and was reviewing a book that was already out

Should she not have said anything? Would you say anything?

Friday at home with dd, maxed out on kids stuff, watching SATC to feel connected to the world of womanhood 😭😭🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ (naughty bits fast forwarded ofc)

Yabu - she was right to tell him and he needed to get over himself, it wasnt a big deal

Yanbu - she shouldn't have mentioned it, what was it going to achieve, short hair carrie was abysmal 😭

Another opinion which i will tell you about below/real life stories of similar which i will share below

🥰

Berger was a man baby with a fragile ego. Big was a dick. Carrie was infuriating.

Not relevant but I always have subtitles on too!

Not in the way she said it and not at that point in their relationship! I can’t quite remember the episode, but I think she was a more successful writer than Burger and it was obvious he had a fragile ego anyway. And as a writer, she should have known better than to give feedback in the way that she did. In all the episodes, never was she more of a bull in a china shop then she was in this scene.

She really was - and I agree, shes an experienced writer at this point

and then in the next episode where she flashes her advance in his face and buys him the prada shirt!! After he told her that his book was a failure

Like omg carrie 😭😭😭

The bit in the restaurant queue with the out-of-towners to prove her scrunchie point was horrific too.

I don’t know if I’m also clouded by thinking Carrie is a dick in general, but, the way she told Berger was atrocious and, as you rightly point out, the book was out! Shut up!

Imagine if Berger had given her some home truths eg you’re a shit “writer” with a vanilla sex column. Your oft-used “I got to thinking” is beyond a joke

Senso · 07/11/2025 15:44

Berger was obviously a trust fund kid (how else could he afford a place in the Hamptons AND live in NYC as a failing writer?!) with a huge chip on his shoulder. He looked down on Carrie because he considered her writing to be lightweight but was jealous of her commercial success.

Carrie had the worst taste in men altogether!

x2boys · 07/11/2025 15:45

She was right ,they were in Manhatten nobody would have been wearing a scrunchy when out and about
I think they saw someone when they were in a bar wearing one and she was visiting manhatten from some two horse town or something like that
Berger was a prick.

MD2020and10LambertandButlerPlease · 07/11/2025 15:48

She wasn't right about anything, ever. I couldn't stand her.

I was raging when this fictional character she got the bloody post it note from him and then stuck it over Charlotte's engagement ring and said "paper covers rock". Absolute bitch.

The way she said scrunchie also enraged me.

Despite the hatred I watched every episode and all of the 'Just Like That' episodes too though, go figure 🤣

Pollqueen · 07/11/2025 15:50

Berger was a dick. Love Carrie, but more importantly, where are you watching SATC?

I saw a couple of episodes last night
Comedy central maybe 🤔

hannahp4 · 07/11/2025 15:54

Berger was annoying and far too up his own arse. Fragile ego. But Carrie was a pain in the ass too and so insufferably self centred. I forgot the paper covers rock thing and now I’m pissed off again. All of her stuff had to trump everyone else’s always. No matter how big their life news was.

My worst moment from her was in the second film when she had the Aiden drama, was vile and dismissive to Charlotte trying to give her sensible advice then went out and kissed him then demanded they all listened to her moan about it when she got in.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 07/11/2025 15:55

I don't think she intentionally gave her opinion to be offensive, it was a fact. 😆
I've never looked at a scrunchy the same since that episode.

Tryingatleast · 07/11/2025 15:55

There was something about Berger even though he’s too cool for me and too moany too. Plus, the post it

JudgeBread · 07/11/2025 15:55

I feel like she was being light-hearted and not giving a real hard hitting critique but underestimated how fragile Berger's ego was.

Carrie drives me absolutely nuts for being a self absorbed, judgemental so and so most of the time, but in this case I feel like she just had a really human foot-in-mouth moment!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 07/11/2025 15:59

I didn't notice how self-absorbed Carrie was when I originally watched the show.
My second hit opened my eyes.
Haven't seen it any of it after the first movie.
It was great at the time.

😄😄 I can see this tbf - i feel like sjp would definitely have an awkward moment like this

But season 5 & 6 carrie was so different from the first 4 seasons, and I just cant stand her so see her though that lens

She was a bitch during that episode! So nasty to Charlotte!

Then again, Samantha's comment 'even bigger than your first one' was also shitty 😒, as much as I love her

And again during film 2, agree @hannahp4 😄, trying to upset fragile Charlotte who was worried about harry fancying the nanny, just because she said not to cheat on big!

Omg youve nailed him here 😄 definitely a trust fund kid

Same sense of uselessness as the guy who came quickly from s3 or 4, whos family were all writers/artists

But she was bringing everything back to her like she always did. Charlotte is engaged but Carrie is basically saying well my shitty break up is more important so we need to talk about that. She did it all the time. They all did to some extent. Someone would be saying something important and the other would chip in with an opinion that immediately turned the conversation back to them. Carrie was definitely the worst for it.

Perhaps this is the best way the writers could think of to get everyone’s issues out there in a 45 minute episode but it didn’t ring true of actual conversations between friends. Can you imagine how tedious it would be if conversations actually went that way?

W0tnow · 07/11/2025 16:32

I was on a long haul flight recently and started watching the latest season of And Just Like That, it was sooooo awful. I lasted about 20 minutes.

Did you know that was Justin Theroux?, pre-marriage to Jennifer Aniston.
It passed me by on earlier viewings as i was more interested in his Mum.
Am old enough to remember her as Rhoda in the late 1970'S 😁

Beekman · 07/11/2025 16:37

Justin Theroux was in it twice as different characters. A few other faces appeared more than once, I guess when making it, they never expected rewatches and detailed analysis decades later!

Berger was generally awful but at least he was honest. Carrie was a shitbag to every man she ever met, including Big and Petrovsky. That they were bigger shits to her doesn’t make her any better.

IsntItDarkOut · 07/11/2025 16:49

She was right but the way she said it made her look like a massive twat. He’s a bloke and didn’t know. It existed and he couldn’t change it and the book failed anyway. What was she achieving.
If she pointed it out in future writing there would have been a point to it.
