Was Carrie Bradshaw right to tell Berger her opinions on 'the scrunchie'

'No self respecting woman who works at W magazine and lives on Perry Street would be caught at a hip, downtown restaurant wearing a scrunchie!'

Berger was a miserable bastard anyway but she did hurt his ego and was reviewing a book that was already out

Should she not have said anything? Would you say anything?

Friday at home with dd, maxed out on kids stuff, watching SATC to feel connected to the world of womanhood 😭😭🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ (naughty bits fast forwarded ofc)

Yabu - she was right to tell him and he needed to get over himself, it wasnt a big deal

Yanbu - she shouldn't have mentioned it, what was it going to achieve, short hair carrie was abysmal 😭

Another opinion which i will tell you about below/real life stories of similar which i will share below

🥰

I think she was right about the scrunchie, but the thing had already been printed. And she hadn't been asked for her advice. She should have kept it to herself.

I don't think Carrie was gold digging with big. She was clearly after some fairytale that he could never deliver. The only time she went to him for money was when she needed a down payment for her apartment but never actually used the check. It was only in the films she was seen to be enjoying his money, but by then it had been years of her just trying to make it work on a romantic level rather than landing a rich guy. Charlotte on the other hand...

I don't know...Charlotte seemed to love Trey and was really upset when it didn't work out. And Harry didn't have lots of family money (I think).

ForHazelTiger · 08/11/2025 03:23

I just can't believe scrunchies are back in now 😅

She was in love with the idea of being marriage to Trey.
Smug and desperately trying to be upper class, pathetic, she was lucky Bunny didn't fight her all the way for her Park Ave pad.
Then she converted for Harry.
I always found Charlotte to be too needy.

I feel like she was being light-hearted and not giving a real hard hitting critique but underestimated how fragile Berger's ego was.

Carrie drives me absolutely nuts for being a self absorbed, judgemental so and so most of the time, but in this case I feel like she just had a really human foot-in-mouth moment!

This. She was making an ill judged light hearted comment and he responds like a petulant child. The only thing I judge her for is not dumping him then and there. Wank.

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 08/11/2025 09:16

No she shouldn't have told him at all. Sadly because of that episode scrunches were rarely available for 20 years despite being so much kinder on hair. I'm loving my silk scrunchies these days😃

ExtraOnions · 08/11/2025 09:17

Here is one for you Carrie dislikers … every episode reviewed, and all the times Carrie was awful

Yes!

I think they're back because there's a focus on hair health, and scrunchies are a good way to tie your hair back without pulling on it. I have a silk one that I use ALL the time at home.

I love how much we all care about this, over 20 years on.

Of all Carrie’s boyfriends, Berger was the one who felt most like a real person to me. That was uncomfortable in some ways, because a lot of the texture of the show was about fantasy. But it also made for a really good storyline. The scene where she goes off on his clueless male buds about how you don’t dump someone via post-it is a classic. The only thing I don’t like about it is Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda reacting to her like she’s being a hysterical woman, because I think everything she says there is absolutely right and reasonable. It felt to me a little bit like the (male) writers and producers couldn’t just let the scene sit straight, either because it made them nervous or because that maybe would have been too earnest for the tone of the show, they wanted it to be over-the-top and quirky, but honestly, she’s just right.

I love how they'd only been at the club a short time but when Carrie says to her friends after the post-it rant 'we have to leave immediately' they don't even ask questions, they just all get up and leave. True friendship 😅

louderthan · 11/11/2025 08:38

Carrie: ‘Why did I have to get up on my sassy horse??’
Miranda: ‘Sass will bite you in the ass’

The “I can’t stand Carrie” takes are so fucking tiresome lol. As a huge SATC fan, I think it’s the most misunderstood show in the history of shows. It’s about a woman - a MAIN character - and her 3 friends. She is by definition the centre of the show and the show is essentially from her POV (hence her narrating it and being the only one of the 4 women to break the 4th wall in the first 2 seasons…). What it’s not is a show about 4 friends!! So all the “they only spent half an episode on Miranda’s wedding but a whole movie on Carrie’s” complaints - HELLO! Miranda is not the main character. I also think the hate comes from a place of envy / general distrust of women who are: good looking, successful, super toned/skinny, well-dressed, wealthy/middle class, attract successful/rich men, have lots of friends & an active social life etc. Like I say, tiresome.

And breathe. 😅

I’d suggest you get some help with that ire on behalf of a famously dreadful fictional character.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 11/11/2025 17:12

I always hated the way that she was sooooo dramatic when her and dumbass Big split up, her friends left young children at home to feed her soup. She was lounging around on beautiful holiday destination with a face like a smacked arse.
I don’t think Samantha acted that way when she was going through chemo and Carrie made that all about her too. She was insufferable at times.

Crushed23 · 11/11/2025 18:40

She’d been jilted 😂 imagine still feeling sad and humiliated by the man you love a few days after the event. Sooooo “dramatic”!

I mean, her beloved had dumped her AT THE ALTAR! She has the right to be devastated. And why not go away with friends instead of the honeymoon being wasted? Agree with you on the being spoon-fed though. That was really cringey.

I understand she’s upset. But Samantha was the one who needed spoon feeding and taking care of when she was so poorly. She was iconic and fabulous whilst going through chemo, at the time my friends mum was dying from breast cancer in her early 40’s so maybe it hit a nerve for me.
However, I bloody love Carrie despite her many flaws and everyone else and the whole show is one of my faves.

Crushed23 · 11/11/2025 18:57

If Samantha had been the main character with the show being from her POV and we got an insight into her inner monologue through her narrating the show, then there would have been more focus on her chemo journey. But she wasn’t the main character.

Seriously, is there a more misunderstood format of a show than SATC? 😅

I also agree. Yes, Carrie is thoughtless and sometimes selfish but the show is Carrie centric because she's the main character and it's from her pov. We don't get the internal monologue etc for them that we get for Carrie.

MrsToothyBitch · 11/11/2025 20:02

And yes she was a jerk about the scrunchie. She was right and she didn't mean it horribly but he was a moany git and the book had been published. Just no, Carrie.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 11/11/2025 20:04

Satc is defo my fave show, I agree that carrie is so well written by Darren starr

Flawed but iconic

When sjp gets involved, imo, it goes a bit awry - hence the disaster that was ajlt 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

The spoon-feeding scene is amazing when you consider that they apparently hated each other in real life (or at any rate KC seems to pretty much hate SJP). Yet they had such great friend chemistry on screen.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 24/11/2025 21:18

i love SATC, I’ve just watched it again and Berger was a complete man child. Although Carrie is a PITA I still love her, she was cool and always looked cool even when just wearing a t.shirt and knickers 🙈😂

One of my favourite episodes is when she goes out with the younger bloke who smoked weed in his parents posh apartment and she ends up taking it with her and getting stoned with Miranda and Samantha 😂😂😂

The Russian was my least favourite of the boyfriends, he was horrible and really creepy. I liked how Miranda figured out what a pretentious prick he was straight away.

Charlotte was always very snobby, she made some comment about Steve being from a different class really early on.
