Was Carrie Bradshaw right to tell Berger her opinions on 'the scrunchie'

'No self respecting woman who works at W magazine and lives on Perry Street would be caught at a hip, downtown restaurant wearing a scrunchie!'

Berger was a miserable bastard anyway but she did hurt his ego and was reviewing a book that was already out

Should she not have said anything? Would you say anything?

Friday at home with dd, maxed out on kids stuff, watching SATC to feel connected to the world of womanhood 😭😭🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ (naughty bits fast forwarded ofc)

Yabu - she was right to tell him and he needed to get over himself, it wasnt a big deal

Yanbu - she shouldn't have mentioned it, what was it going to achieve, short hair carrie was abysmal 😭

Another opinion which i will tell you about below/real life stories of similar which i will share below

🥰

The “I can’t stand Carrie” takes are so fucking tiresome lol. As a huge SATC fan, I think it’s the most misunderstood show in the history of shows. It’s about a woman - a MAIN character - and her 3 friends. She is by definition the centre of the show and the show is essentially from her POV (hence her narrating it and being the only one of the 4 women to break the 4th wall in the first 2 seasons…). What it’s not is a show about 4 friends!! So all the “they only spent half an episode on Miranda’s wedding but a whole movie on Carrie’s” complaints - HELLO! Miranda is not the main character. I also think the hate comes from a place of envy / general distrust of women who are: good looking, successful, super toned/skinny, well-dressed, wealthy/middle class, attract successful/rich men, have lots of friends & an active social life etc. Like I say, tiresome.

And breathe. 😅

😄😄 just wanna say, i do love carrie and the show!

Its almost a masterpiece - and the women are very well written

But s5 and 6 carrie seems like she was less well written and that sjp had a bigger part to play in that - super screechy and uncool

I was on a long haul flight recently and started watching the latest season of And Just Like That, it was sooooo awful. I lasted about 20 minutes.

My sister loves it.
I think the last seasons turned me off SATC. I haven't bothered with it.

To me, friends is the classic. I think I've seen every episode 5 times, last time I watched it was 2020 during lockdown.

ThatsNotAKnife · 07/11/2025 16:55

I always think of Carrie when I see scrunchies in the street. I agree with her. Berger was a dick though.

I have one scrunchie I wear around the house.

elviswhorley · 07/11/2025 17:05

Berger was a miserable drag. He asked for her criticism. She gave it. She is in the know. She IS his character. He was a total ass about it.
She gave criticism to the new English guy and he was fine with it. He was also right about wearing heels inside.

It’s equally tiresome that not liking a female (or character in this case) must mean you’re jealous of them. Carrie was annoying and a shit friend/partner on many occasions. Lots of people agree. Are they all jealous of her?

Beekman · 07/11/2025 17:22

At least thanks to AJLT we can now see what Carrie saw in Big and why she took him back after he completely humiliated her. I mean, leaving her with enough money to buy a townhouse actually on Gramercy Park, well.

ItsmeMargo · 07/11/2025 17:35

IsntItDarkOut · 07/11/2025 16:49

She was right but the way she said it made her look like a massive twat. He’s a bloke and didn’t know. It existed and he couldn’t change it and the book failed anyway. What was she achieving.
If she pointed it out in future writing there would have been a point to it.

Agree with all of this.

Book was already in print: he couldn’t change it. And she shamed him with the way she brought it up.

And yes, I realise I am taking this way too seriously 😄

She was flawed but so incredibly gorgeous

Mistressofnone · 07/11/2025 20:33

I liked the Berger episodes. The appeal is that she is very flawed and makes poor decisions. I love her for the early fart episode and how much she overthinks it!

I don’t remember her breaking the fourth wall? Do you mean speaking direct to camera?

Re OP’s question: objectively, Carrie was unreasonable. But fashion was her thing, and annoying as it is for others, if something is your thing it can be physically painful to have people get stuff wrong about it.

The most disappointing thing for me was how spectacularly gold-digging Carrie and Charlotte were. Smart, educated women with huge potential and all they seemed to care about was bagging a rich husband. Charlotte was a lot more obvious about it than Carrie, but it’s clear it’s Big’s status of upper east side financier with a fancy apartment and a driver that Carrie fell in love with. Also it was only ever men in the series that seemed to have a ‘house in the Hamptons/Connecticut/Upstate’ (Berger, Harry, Aidan, Trey, Stanford, Richard, the doctor Carrie meets at a book party), when we know that plenty of women in New York owned real estate in the 2000s. Miranda was a partner in a law firm, yet her character was never shown to enjoy her money and success. She could easily afford a beach house that she could invite the women to, but they had her living in a 1-bed on the UWS and ordering Chinese every night.

Edited

In season 1 she would speak to the camera

That’s interesting, I’d never thought about the women not owning real estate. Maybe the producers wanted them to seem relatable? Ironic given how Marie Antoinettish it all got later on.

Though I have to say that living in a 1 bed on the UWS and ordering Chinese every night sounds like the dream to me!

GellerYeller · 07/11/2025 21:37

Yes, she was right.
Without it, we’d never have got to experience Berger’s stone cold classic ‘nice hat’ line.

WalkDontWalk · 07/11/2025 21:51

Of course she was right too. She's a fictional character in a fictional relationship. So the plot required her to do it. If everyone in fiction was nice to each other, there'd be no story.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 07/11/2025 22:06

I always wondered why Berger would have included that detail in the book anyway. Just seems a strange thing for a bloke like him to be aware of.

I think in the books on which SATC is based, it was much clearer (if I am remembering correctly) that Carrie’s relationship with Big was based on his money. That she knew he couldn’t give her the love that she truly wanted but that was ok because he was filthy rich.

I think that was the point.
They were living free, spending, enjoying the good life in the moment.
My friends and I were similar but in our 20's.
It was refreshing at the time

We tried mirroring the lifestyle and ended up with loads of debt, buying handbags, eating out and living on pot noodles for the rest of the month.
it was fun, now my life is boring as paint drying.

I don't think Carrie was gold digging with big. She was clearly after some fairytale that he could never deliver. The only time she went to him for money was when she needed a down payment for her apartment but never actually used the check. It was only in the films she was seen to be enjoying his money, but by then it had been years of her just trying to make it work on a romantic level rather than landing a rich guy. Charlotte on the other hand...
