If the health visitor or midwife sees one of these dogs in the home, they should contact social services. I don’t know if it is, but should be enough to remove children under 10 from home if they refuse to put dog to sleep.

Edited: actually it’s an immediate danger so social services/ police should be able to immediately remove children and then whether or not they can come home if risk is gone…..

I have an English bulldog - used to be known as "nanny dogs".

Never left alone around my toddler - but is very good with him. Hes the biggest wimp of a dog, heart of gold and ive been told countless times about how he has changed the people's perspective of bulldogs.

I'll admit I was wary of bulldogs and I cant speak for them all (or their owners) but I do believe a lot of it is how a dog is brought up with their surroundings and also disciplining the dog.

Why get a bulldog when a spaniel would be much safer? Why? Do you find it funny to terrify young kids? Is that how you get your kicks? Seriously why?

ThatsNotAKnife · 07/11/2025 07:37

The "nanny dog" story is a myth. Just because one idiot put his dog in a pram century ago doesn't mean the dog was in any way suited to be around children.

chunkymum4 · 07/11/2025 07:38

I own a bull breed and even I despise these dogs with a passion. They are unlike other dogs and other bull breeds for that matter. We are seeing time and time again how they seemingly just flip and when they do someone ends up seriously injured or in many cases dead. Our dog is never ever left along with the dc and quite often is segregated (dog came before kids so wasn’t like we deliberately picked this breed as a family pet). He has never shown an ounce of aggression to any of us but I’m not stupid and understand the power behind him. That said, I still don’t think his breed has been messed with genetically in the same way XL bully’s have.

camelofdestiny · 07/11/2025 07:38

This breed needs to be completely eradicated. They should ALL be put down and I say that as someone who has and loves dogs.

At this point, its clear its the breed - there are bad owners of other dog breeds too and they arent killing people- including children and the elderly on a weekly basis.

We dont allow guns in this country on the basis that some people might be sensible with them because the harm of the other % is too great a sacrifice to make. Same with this horrible breed. Put them all down.

Newname71 · 07/11/2025 07:41

I’m a dog lover. We have a Staffy. He’s the most loyal, loving and well behaved dog you can think of. He sleeps spooned with our cat.
I have and will always defend them as a breed.
I have also always believed there are no bad dogs just bad owners
But…..
I hate to say it but I do think there’s something genetically wrong with the XL bullies. It makes me sad to say it but I think it’s true. ☹️

Actually as one poster noted on basically the same thread yesterday, some Spaniel types routinely appear on lists of dogs most likely to bite. The list also included Chihuahua, Jack Russel Terriers.

'Bully Breeds' were included in it lumped together (XL Bullies, Pitbulls and Boxers etc) which makes no sense as no other 'group' had this.

But being honest (and no ofence to @obliviate24 for owning one), an English bulldog doesn't have the energy to bite anyone - most of them are too fat and to riddled with disease to move further than the food bowl.

Nonpetgirl · 07/11/2025 07:43

Terrytheweasel · 07/11/2025 06:34

They shouldn’t even exist in my opinion. I would have them all humanely put to sleep and I would make sure all owners of dogs have a licence like they do in Germany.

Yes the time has come for these dogs to be euthanised. That will protect children , a registry does absolutely nothing to protect life

Same. I have a staffy cross. I don’t have children but I wouldn’t leave him alone with them, but then I don’t think I’d leave any dog alone with very small children or a bigger energetic dog with any child.

We have a Staffy. I did an online “which dog would suit you” questionnaire based on size, coat length etc and Staffy came out top.
He’s an amazing dog.
He’s well behaved, only barks to warn us someone is near the door.
He sleeps spooned with our cat.
We could walk him anywhere off lead (we don’t) if we chose to because he’s so well trained.
He’s extremely loving and loyal.
Edited to add. We did a lot of research on inherited health conditions etc and took months to decide which breed to get. Now, I wouldn’t have any other breed

BlusteryLake · 07/11/2025 07:50

It's time we stopped accepting children as collateral damage for antisocial idiots who refuse to euthanise their banned dogs. I don't care if these awful creatures are healthy and their equally awful owners think they are "soppy as a brush" , children's lives are more important than dogs.

Honestly it could be any dog. Its an animal. You never, ever leave a dog alone with a young child.
They are not furbabies.
Thinking of the family of the baby.

Big dogs like XL bullies cause the same damage as toy breeds? I agree that young children shouldn’t be alone with pets.

InterestedDad37 · 07/11/2025 07:56

Bulldogs, Bullys, Mastiffs, Staffies, whatever, they're all ugly as sin and dangerous, to boot. Can't stand them, don't understand what people see in them, actively avoid visiting houses that have them 🙂

LondonLady1980 · 07/11/2025 07:59

One previous thread, a woman who lived on the street of the incident posted and said it wasn’t actually the family’s home or their pet.

The parents (and the baby), had gone to visit another family member at their home and it was their dog.

I don’t know if this is true but the poster seemed genuine.

I heard this too but it makes zero difference. They should still all be put down. These dogs literally cannot live in society without maiming, killing and destroying lives.

SheinIsShite · 07/11/2025 08:01

Well knock me down with a feather.

Of course it was. People who have these beasts are idiots, people who have these beasts in a house WITH A BABY are criminally irresponsible. There are absolutely no positives in these animals. Cull them all now.

That’s like saying why have any large, powerful breeds - Alsatian, Rottweiler, great Dane’s the list goes on. But at the time as a childfree couple we liked the breed. Comparing all bull breeds against an XL bully is pointless. They are genetically deformed and unlike any other dog I’ve seen in their ability to flip and turn on anyone even their owners. I would happily see all XL bully’s humanely destroyed.

ExtraOnions · 07/11/2025 08:07

Be another “big soft baby, who won’t harm anyone”.. probably pictures on Facebook protesting the ban etc.

These breeds are built for fighting .. it’s a natural instinct, and all the “loved up” pictures on Social Meda won’t change that. Yes it’s the owners, but it’s also the breed.

SheinIsShite · 07/11/2025 08:09

FFS why does this have to be pointed out so often? Will say it again in words of one syllable.

If a small dog is biting your child you can get it off. You can pull it. You can stamp on it. You can kill it.

You cannot kill a big dog like an XL bully. It will kill you too.

AberforthDumbledoresGoat · 07/11/2025 08:12

Another thread that the anti dog brigade can use to further their agenda. Didn’t even take ten posts before it began.

Staffies, Boxers and many other bull breeds are as dissimilar from XL Bullies as a lab is from a clumber spaniel. The fact people pipe up on these threads suggesting otherwise is just amusing at this point.

But please, do let your hysteria, ignorance and lust for pitchforks stand in the way of common sense.

Rowgtfc72 · 07/11/2025 08:13

@ClimbingMountChocolate I had two Jack Russells when dd was born. The health visitor did make a note of it in my red book that she had discussed the dangers of babies and dogs.

Statistically, as a poster noted on another thread you’re more likely to be bitten (0.3% of a chance) by a dog than you are killed by one (0.00001% according to the stats given yesterday). So yes, it is relevant.

And I’m a spaniel owner.

The13thFairy · 07/11/2025 08:15

Never leave your child alone with a dog. I wonder. If you were in a room with your child and a bully, and it went for your child, would you be able to stop it? You wouldn't.
