Surely I'm not being unreasonable here? There are 200 people squashed together already, why make it any more unpleasant than it has to be. Both of these things happened on my flight today.

Can't edit the typo on the title🤣

We were once on a bus where it said clearly at the front . Be considerate - use headphones for phones . It didnt mention nail polish ! But we said at the time that sign should be on all transport.

Oneborneverydecade · 07/11/2025 11:32

About 15 years ago I started painting my nails on a flight to Ireland. A flight attendant asked me to stop almost straight away.

I think having your music blasting at the gym bc you've forgotten your headphones is a dick move too. Today I had my TV show, the gym music and some guys music all at the same time. I need noise cancelling headphones

Oneborneverydecade · 07/11/2025 11:36

I'll add it was a daft thing to do but it wasn't malicious, just unthinking. I was a single parent to a pre schooler on our way to visit family. I probably just thought this is a good opportunity as I'm sat down.

TorroFerney · 07/11/2025 11:37

We were on a flight to munich on Friday night. There was a very loud very tinny shouting sound coming from a couple of rows in front, a passenger en route to Beijing just listening to a very shouty programme in mandarin. No one said anything. It she’d have been close to me I would, as I did to a bloke in a Hilton lounge in London. Have you got earphones? No. Well you can’t listen to that then. Cue him turning it off but five minutes later starting again, told him again and he stopped. Who doesn’t have headphones/earbuds these days?

theres a passage in the latest Richard osman about it where a bloke won’t turn his loud phone off and the character has a gun which she points at his groin and explains that if she shoots him and then gets put on trial, as soon as the judge and jury hear why she did it they will not only find her not guilty but will cheer her!

Smell I’m guessing? If doesn’t bother me but it can trigger people’s headaches

David Sedarus recounts a woman on a train doing it and he asks her to stop , she won’t believe the small is getting to him.

The phone noise is obviously annoying but what's the issue with someone painting their nails?

Strong smell in a small space.

SwingTheMonkey · 07/11/2025 11:40

YANBU at all. I experienced a grown man watching instagram videos at full volume on a transatlantic night flight last week. I was so desperate to sleep I could have throttled him.

OOo0 · 07/11/2025 11:45

Yanbu I’m so sick of people not wearing headphones, guy recently in the physio waiting room just scrolling through TikTok loudly and a couple of weeks back but annoyed me much more was in a hospital waiting room a carer in uniform just scrolling through, no headphones, speaker ridiculously loud. Wear headphones or watch that stuff on mute.

MyAmusedPearlSquid · 07/11/2025 12:12

Headphones should definitely be used in these situations I would understand if it was a sen child though as for nail Polish that's completely unreasonable

JudgeBread · 06/11/2025 22:53

I watched a woman give herself an entire gel polish manicure on a flight once. She'd brought a little UV lamp in her hand luggage and everything. Honestly I was more impressed than anything.

Times like that you wish for really bad turbulence.

Foxhasbigsocks · 07/11/2025 12:25

Nail polish is a migraine trigger for me so this would be my worst nightmare. They might change their mind about the manicure if the seatbelt sign was on and I had no choice but to start being sick next to them into the sick bag due to the migraine!!

Keytoken · 07/11/2025 12:28

Neither are things I'd do on an plane or anywhere else, but I think probably if other people and their foibles annoy you to this extent, it's best not to go on a plane with 200 people in a small space.

usedtobeaylis · 07/11/2025 12:34

Why haven't transport operators done anything about it? It's a huge problem on all forms of transport. It's nauseating actually the extent of it. I asked my local bus operator if they were going to put signs up on their buses since they've got signed for everything else and they said no. Why not? It's not like noise in public spaces isn't regulated.

LeavesOnTrees · 07/11/2025 12:42

Sympathies. I once sat next to a woman who started painting her nails on a flight. It stank.

Fortunately the air hostess told her to stop.

That's the thing it was only a domestic flight so small plane, it was quite bumpy and she just carried on as if she performes manicures in turbulence all the time.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 07/11/2025 11:09

Did you say something? Everyone always says they're too afraid of confrontation but everybody I've addressed has always turned the volume off. Somtimes it's accompanied with embarrassment and sometimes a glare and a mutter but oh well.

Absolutely I said something, so she stopped and her mate did hers instead!! So I spoke to cabin crew (Wizz Air) who told them to "do it at the front of the plane instead" as if that makes a difference!!!

To the contrary, videos without headphones seems to be a problem on every flight! I think airlines should implement a policy, at very least have signs up or share information that headphones are required out of courtesy, maybe sell cheap ones on board in case people forget or they break. They tell us we can't bring water or turn our data on and we all do it without question. It's hardly a big ask to monitor this issue which can cause enormous stress to passengers.

I recently flew on a plane with wifi and they made very clear announcements that under no circumstances were out-loud videos, music or calls permitted at any point. I think they would have enforced it if needed as well.

FullOfMomsense · 07/11/2025 13:25

Videos out loud is annoying, painting nails is fine unless they're spilling varnish everywhere

2toomanycats · 07/11/2025 13:28

Better than the smell of people’s arses. Or breath.
the amount of people who just fart away with complete abandon on a flight. 🤢

TBF there's a good physiological reason for the latter....

How to tackle the most embarrassing problem on planes

In-flight flatulence is a common discomfort – so what causes it? And what can we do to save embarrassment? David Robson finds some surprising answers.

Is it fine when it’s triggering an asthma attack?

MimiGC · 07/11/2025 13:48

I would rather these anti-social gits did it on a plane, compared to on a train or bus. Because a) there are several staff on board, one of whom might be willing to tell them to pack it in, and b) because they can’t stab you for daring to challenge them.

balkanscot · 07/11/2025 13:54

Apart from the smell, nail polish is also flammable. Is it even allowed in hand luggage? I know the chances are small but if it did ignite, in a metal tube, full of people squashed together, at 11,000 m height…

SpaceRaccoon · 07/11/2025 13:58

I had the nails thing once and I grassed her to the flight attendant, who told her to stop.
