You don't paint you nails or watch videos on your phone without headphones on a bloody plane!!

Surely I'm not being unreasonable here? There are 200 people squashed together already, why make it any more unpleasant than it has to be. Both of these things happened on my flight today.

Can't edit the typo on the title🤣

Well obviously someone has to prompt this thread

Dontlletmedownbruce · 06/11/2025 22:51

To the contrary, videos without headphones seems to be a problem on every flight! I think airlines should implement a policy, at very least have signs up or share information that headphones are required out of courtesy, maybe sell cheap ones on board in case people forget or they break. They tell us we can't bring water or turn our data on and we all do it without question. It's hardly a big ask to monitor this issue which can cause enormous stress to passengers.

BananaramaDefence · 06/11/2025 22:52

Agreed{mention:Dontlletmedownbruce}and@Dontlletmedownbruceand surely it goes without saying not to bloody paint your nails???

I watched a woman give herself an entire gel polish manicure on a flight once. She'd brought a little UV lamp in her hand luggage and everything. Honestly I was more impressed than anything.

Fargo79 · 06/11/2025 22:56

The phone noise is obviously annoying but what's the issue with someone painting their nails?

Smell I’m guessing? If doesn’t bother me but it can trigger people’s headaches

Nutmuncher · 06/11/2025 22:59

The entitlement and self absorption of some people knows no bounds. Total disregard for those around them, it’s infuriating.

I believe the term is selfish cunt.

PickledMuffin · 06/11/2025 22:59

I thought both were bad enough on a bus or train, but on a plane! The ignorance is beyond me.

PermanentTemporary · 06/11/2025 23:01

Both ridiculous things to do on a plane, I agree. The nail painter must have stunk out the whole flight.

I wonder if they will start recruiting flight attendants who are more like bouncers. If people are unable to act as if other people exist, there might have to be more proactive control.

Beekman · 06/11/2025 23:03

Nail polish stinks, so I’m sure that is the issue here; smells seem worse in a pressurised tube. It’s bad enough when someone decides to douse themselves in perfume or body spray, even scented hand cream honks.

BananaramaDefence · 06/11/2025 23:04

ShanghaiDiva · 06/11/2025 22:57

The smell?

Quite. It was so overpowering. Made me feel sick and headachy

Every flight I’ve been on lately I’ve had to listen to crappy games and annoying kids videos.

I genuinely believe some people can’t hear it, but to me it’s unbearable. And before anyone comes along and says ‘what about kids with SED?’ two of my children are neurodivergent. And in my experience it’s not ND kids (whose parents are, for the most part, so worried their kids will disturb other people, they’re extra considerate).

Headphones or mute. It’s not difficult.

I don’t think some people realise the stress it causes. My ASD daughter has extremely sensitive hearing and even with noise cancelling headphones, she could still hear it and was in tears - 5 kids in the 2 rows in front of us all had iPads blaring (one was a game with whistles and missiles). When asked one family turned it down, the other ignored us. The flight attendant just shrugged. My DD was visibly distressed - rocking back and forth, holding her headphones tighter, crying. Can’t imagine anyone else on the plane wanted to hear it either.

I almost started a thread about it. I’m glad you did OP. It’s been cathartic to have a good old moan!

MrsClatterbuck · 06/11/2025 23:06

My dh has asthma and the smell of nail polish can trigger an attack and in such a confined space he wouldn't need to be beside someone but even a few seats away.

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 06/11/2025 23:09

I once had some woman and her child on a coach sat in front of me. They were also heading to London, presumably to watch a show.

She had headphones but she let her kid listen to utter brain rot for 4 hours and wouldn’t take her headphones off when I tried to ask her to turn her child’s noise down.

She then had the audacity to paint her kids nails and then use colour hair spray and then glitter hairspray on her kids hair. It was all over the seat and I was coughing with the smell and was covered in glitter!

Absolute shithead

Why are the people who are saying I'm being unreasonable not giving reasons why they think this??

Because they're the ones painting their nails and listening to shite without headphones. Dicks

The smell isn't a natural one. If quite near to you not very nice. There are lots of people who don't really think when they do things.

LonelyFans · 07/11/2025 10:43

Yanbu. People are so totally obnoxious at the moment. It seems much worse since covid weirdly

Mistressofnone · 07/11/2025 10:43

I have a friend who files her nails on the tube to work. I’ve told her it’s disgusting but she can’t understand why.

Tryingatleast · 07/11/2025 10:53

the nail varnish thing! How did they not twig that? Small space, how many people and stinky nail varnish!!!

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 07/11/2025 10:58

That's horrific. What kind of flight was it?

I find people who use spray deodorants in the swimming changing room make me wheezy so this would be appalling.

waitam · 07/11/2025 11:06

I'm guessing a weekend flight to Benidorm or similar lol 😊That sounds like I'm a snob I am a bit . But it could be to anywhere I suppose, since many are just lacking self awareness and have a huge sense of entitlement. Travelling shines a light on the behaviour of others. Maybe I'm not perfect either, but I'd like to think I try and be ok by using noise cancelling headphones, no perfume, etc.

I agree that all forms of transport should demand the use of headphones/buds. The majority do use them anyway so I reckon it's mostly indulgent silly parents who allow their kids to watch stuff that's the problem, although adults do it too.

It's an easy win really. Put your phone in flight mode, fasten your seatbelt, put seat in the upright position and use headphones/buds throughout the flight. Thank you.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 07/11/2025 11:09

Did you say something? Everyone always says they're too afraid of confrontation but everybody I've addressed has always turned the volume off. Somtimes it's accompanied with embarrassment and sometimes a glare and a mutter but oh well.

Why on earth would you impressed with someone polluting a plane load of people with nail polish fumes?
