‘Just the meat for me please’ Sunday Lunch issue ’

SIS and BIL coming for Sunday Lunch, bringing DN and her BF- recently engaged.
Got a little gift for them and card etc, my parents were coming any way so invited Sunday for food as makes sense.

SIS has just WhatsApped to say jokingly that the BF -mega gym bunny - ‘doesn’t do potatoes and trimmings- but don’t worry he’ll just pile his plate high with meat’
Im doing a couple chickens and a gammon between us all so plenty for everyone alongside stuffing, veg, Yorkies , gravey, cauliflower cheese etc but definitely not for a huge piled up plate of just meat!

I replied lightheartedly to SIS to this effect and she’s not a happy camper at all.
Just texted to say wants him to feel welcome so will bring him a couple of raw pork chops or similar to fry - I’ve said bring them cooked and sliced already in a Tupperware as I won’t be frying chops with all the carnage of the roast going on and my parents milling about under my feet ‘helping’

Shes voice noting at the moment can see the symbol
honestly am I just old or a shit hostess or is this how guests who barely know their hosts I might add expect to be catered for ???

I mean veggie/vegan all power to you
but a plate piled up of meat for lunch seems a bit full on to me ??

Hmm, I used to train at a gym where the Paleo ethic was quite strong, big lads who played rugby, etc. I even tried it for a while, still fat as fk.

They were still keen on all the veg. This just sounds more disordered eating.

I'm salivating over all the sexy veg chat ha

Hassleback pots

Presumably he's an adult with manners. He can eat only meat if he wishes but he takes the same amount of meat as every other adult and, if he's still hungry, he either eats the trimmings or eats more meat when he gets home.
I went on a date once with a man who sat at a table with a black coffee for the entire date ( it was lunchtime) and refused any food. He was 'shredding' to get down to 12% body fat because he liked the look. He talked about it for the entire date. There wasn't a second date.

ShiftingSand · 05/11/2025 19:58

The wedding breakfast should be interesting.

Darling... It'll cost you a tenner max to buy some extra meat for this guy.

I wouldn't think about it twice, easy problem, easy solution. I don't understand how that's become 'a thing'.

It may only cost a tenner but presumably OP has already spent quite a lot of money considering she's catering to 11 people.

Chazbots · 05/11/2025 20:00

And I would so come for lunch at yours and eat all of the things. :-)

I dated a body builder 30 odd years ok ( was raw eggs in a blender back then and 20 steak mince patties cooked in butter.

After DTD he would jump straight up and measure his thighs and biceps 💪 as were ‘ pumped’ up and bigger
He asked me to take a Polaroid snap once, flexing- which was my limit
toe curling

Me neither. Butter, cream, honey, bacon in veg etc not needed weekly I don't think.

I don’t get the honey on carrots or parsnips. Surely these veg are sweet already? This is coming from a sweet toothed person 😂

toroyjabali · 05/11/2025 20:12

i might roll my eyes but if we are hosting we try to accommodate everyone, especially on a special occasion, I’d buy a packet of sausages and cook them around the chicken. It’s not a big deal and won’t take extra time or effort and others might enjoy chicken and sausages too.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 05/11/2025 14:58

I absolutely do not understand people like this.

You've been invited for lunch. Just eat what is there - fine if you don't want the potatoes and veg, just eat what you like from what you are given or is offered to you. It's not an allergy problem.

Why oh why do you take sliced fucking avocado to someones house to eat yourself! Can you not just have it when you get home? You will look like a dick.

I massively empathise with you OP.

This. He can surely have extra meat and his fucking avocado before or after someone has generously hosted him. Rude fucker. Does he need the comfiest chair too? Can't believe people pander to this bullshit.

considertheravens · 05/11/2025 20:21

I dated a few gym bros and they would only eat the white breast meat. There was no way they would eat the (what they called greasy) thighs and wings😬

I hope it all goes well for you OP and he's a decent lad. Your menu sounds lush!😋

Wilfulignoranceabounds · 05/11/2025 18:08

Is everything organic?

Not everything because she understands (ish, from a very privileged bubble) costs but she would love it to be. About 80% organic.

a lot of people have mentioned stinky farts and sore bowels on this thread. Dd doesn’t get either of those.

that’s why it’s so hard to argue against, she’s thriving.

Zucker · 05/11/2025 20:21

Gym boy wouldn't eat sausage if his diet is chicken, avocado and homemade mayo. Think about what's in a sausage.

Gremlins101 · 05/11/2025 20:23

Don't make a big deal out of it. Most important is you all have a nice time together. Sounds a nice occasion with your family and you wont be eating together all the time.

99bottlesofkombucha · 05/11/2025 20:27

It’s just so rude, and sils follow up makes it sound like he really would be that rude as to take his and 5 other people’s share of the meat and eat it. The op has 3 adult boys, I’m sure she’s done years of ‘have you left enough meat for everyone else’ then along comes someone who apparently was never parented. (Cannot believe the cf stories on this thread about guests literally taking all the meat)
anyway, I’d feel quite sorry for the niece as this sounds expensive and unreasonable and presumably she has to help fund it (or she will) and treat it like it’s normal. My nephew power lifts competitively. He can lift 6 of me at once. Hes a lovely young man who eats a healthy range of food, of course he loves meat and eats a lot of protein but he doesn’t take everyone else’s.
if you were going to theirs for dinner any time soon one of your sons should decide they are vegan and call ahead to let them know. I’d mention it before hand so they can make a few leading comments so it’s not such a surprise when you text to say fyi Bobby is vegan now.

I’d be giving the 16yo girl someone has on this thread the little house in the big woods series. Beautiful descriptions of food, a good read, and it’s blindingly clear that you spend your life working really hard to have unseasonal food in winter so you don’t all die.

Sausages probably wouldn't be 'pure' enough protein for him.

Grrr, this post has me reminiscing about a Xmas way back when my Sis, her DH & DC’s rocked up to my home for lunch, contributed nothing more than a green salad, and we all watched her DH pile his plate sky high with the roasted boneless turkey breast and the best bits of the beef. Greedy cheeky bugger took so much there wasn’t much left to go round for the rest of the family 😖

Washingupdone · 05/11/2025 20:36

The smaller dinner plates, if you have them.

NamelessNancy · 05/11/2025 20:37

TheAlertLimeSnail · 05/11/2025 20:00

And if all 11 people expected "only another tenner" to be spent on them? So fucking rude!

tragichero · 05/11/2025 20:41

Right, based on another thread actually (a woman who wanted to do a 1kg chicken for Xmas for 5 adults) I bought a 1.5 one this Sunday and did an experiment. I am on my own at the moment (DD is at her dad's) and I love chicken, so I have had it for every lunch and dinner since, counting.

I finished it just now. So that is seven meals from a 1.5 chicken (plus the cat had some bits). I am not an enormous eater, but the meals were mainly chicken focused (one roast, but otherwise salads or paninis). It lasted me 7 meals.

So I would confidently say a 1.5 chicken can feed 7 normal people 1 meal each.

Therefore, if you have two chickens + gammon, even if the meat guy wants a disproportionate amount of meat, providing he isn't mental, I think you will be fine.

I think you have meat enough for 20.

Just don't sweat it!

I imagine the poor fella would feel gutted if he realised that he is causing all this angst. Just let everyone have the meat they want, let him tuck into any other available meat, and if he doesn't feel he has had enough, I have no doubt he can source his own meat later.

I think your dsis may be a little bit of a stirrwr, TBH. Or maybe you are a slightly anxious host (i know I can be) and have panicked about a throw away comment unnecessarily.

Either way, just stress less and enjoy the meal. You will have plenty meat (and I don't think you even need to add in the thighs you have mentioned! But if you feel they will make you comfier, by all means do it!).

I hope it goes well, and that you all have a lovely meal.

Total CF!

100% - vain gym bunny wants to load protein - he can do it at home. As a guest, you eat what's there... unless potato causes you to need epipen, you eat a potato.

Dontbeme · 05/11/2025 20:45

I'm imagining this guy rocking up for Sunday lunch.

Limon87 · 05/11/2025 20:47

Surely to god just cooking a pork chop or some extra chicken is easier then setting up this thread? Honestly we need a “think before you Mumsnet” tag. Things are getting out of hand. Your niece’s boyfriend doesn’t eat carbs, they’ve given you a heads up. Alright it’s a bit annoying but it’s hardly the biggest deal, expense or effort. You simply buy some extra meat. Get a rotisserie chicken if you’re that put out. You don’t ask people to bring some extra pork chops cooked. It’s tight and it’s weird,

pestowithwalnuts · 05/11/2025 20:50

Make sure everyone gets plenty of meat before he helps himself.
I'd keep a bit back too for nibbles later.
Reminds me a bit of dh and me sharing a bag of liquorice all sorts.
He hated the coconut ones and there always seemed to be lots of them.
They weren't my favourites either but i was buggered if I'd eat just those and let him have the nice ones
