To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

You tell me how to ‘prepare’.

We shut all curtains; have the TV on loud; give calming tablets to the dog who is affected (the other two don’t mind it).

She still loses control of her bladder because she is so frightened. She races around the room in terror, even though she starts on the sofa with me.

We try to go away somewhere without fireworks on the night of the local display, but a couple of years we haven’t been able to. It’s also a big expense to do that.

If it’s affecting our dog so much, what is it doing to wild animals and farm animals?

Ive seen silent fireworks set to music- it was stunning. I don’t understand why the bangs are necessary, when they can be made without.

I’m very sympathetic to people who don’t like fireworks for whatever reason and would support a ban on selling them - however I just find it so baffling that people on social media complain specifically that they weren’t warned there would be fireworks and if they had but known they could have prepared.
Clearly they have some thoughts of how they could have prepared and while fireworks are readily available and it’s the weekend before bonfire night I can’t understand why they wouldn’t just take those preparations anyway.

attichoarder · 02/11/2025 22:14

Bonfire night is an annual event - admittelty it spans a week especially when Nov 5th is midweek but it is a tradition so I think people should accept it and keep their pets in. I agree that it is wrong that fireworks are set off at other times other times though.

I know! If only.

I’m not a dog person. Can you think for a second it’s not just about dog owners?
Wildlife? Children? Other humans? It’s called decency.

WTF is wrong with you? Just be a nice person.

I would be in favour of organised displays only and don't wish distress on any animal.

But it is hugely hypocritical of dog owners on this thread to pretend they care about wildlife, livestock, environment etc given the massive damage dogs do to those every day.

Mine don’t. They do however, stop my MH from spiralling out of control.

Fireworks have definitely got louder since I was a kid. We used to have a Catherine wheel; a Roman candle; a traffic light, and a couple of rockets in the back garden, but the bangs are horrendous now, and the displays go on for ages. They don’t NEED to be so loud- they have been made louder. A bit of common sense is needed. It’s not just animals- lots of humans are affected too!

fierybrunette · 02/11/2025 20:32

Lots of people and animals don’t like fireworks for very good reasons. Just because your family likes them doesn’t mean everyone should have to put up with it.

I have to say that I found it awful today with all the fireworks going off - so loud. With all the wars we’re seeing on tv it’s depressing for some of us rather than joyful. Sorry to those who don’t t like me saying that but that’s the way it is.

Hope all the pets are ok.

I remember the good old days when Halloween meant kids running up and down the street pretending to be ghosts and bonfire night was one night. A box of fire works that didnt make much noise, a few sparklers, a bag of treacle toffee then inside and off to bed 😆😆

Barrelifdance · 02/11/2025 21:28

Fireworks are just so tedious and so boring!! People staring up at some lights in the sky and ooing and arring!! Whoopie bloody do!! I also loathe kids that are scared of dogs! Pathetic.

It’s pathetic and weird how a grown arsed adult seems to be so angry that some children are scared of dogs.

Chill bro.

Baked potatoes in foil on the fire, and hot Bovril or ribena!

I rather suspect that the venn diagram of those you so nicely refer to as chavvy c*s that shop in Asda and those dog owners who were responsible for the deaths of 10 people in 2022 and 7 in 2023 has a very large overlap ;)

A quick Google shows that:

  • Livestock worrying cost farmers £2.4 million a year as of 2023.
  • There are massive environmental effects - from wildlife deaths, to general harassment, to the climate impact of the food they eat. The dry food alone (with wet food much more damaging) found that "dry cat and dog food in the US amounted to between 25% and 30% of the emissions associated with animal products consumed by all US citizens"
  • In the UK there have been multiple warnings that dog faeces and urine harm nature reserves, beaches, the medications people put on them are contaminating water etc

....I could go on.

chaosmaker · 02/11/2025 22:23

They did only used to be on bonfire night. Why do they need to go off any other night? nye was only since 2000 and then every stupid year since.

If you've read my comments instead of just latching on to this one, you'll know that I'm thinking about the children who have to be scared every day of the year due to the fact that dogs are now seemingly allowed almost everywhere.

and again, if you've read my comments, I've also agreed that it isn't just about dogs and some arguments are absolutely valid when it comes to public displays only.

abouttogetlynched · 02/11/2025 22:24

I get that people’s pets get scared, my mum’s dog hates fireworks, it’s horrible. BUT did dogs and cats shit themselves at fireworks in the 80s and 90s? I’ve always had pets and don’t remember it being an issue.
On our local FB there’s one woman moaning her dog is terrified (I’m not doubting it is) but she seems to forget that 30-40 years ago it was her husband and teenage sons setting off all the fireworks on our local neighbourhood green/field.
Why now is it such an issue?

I’m just confused what’s the matter with Asda. I shop in Iceland and Aldi, and have never bought fireworks in my life.

I do have a garden. Unsure if it’s nasty.

Nope, not nuts. Sorry to disappoint you.
I just feel very strongly that we don’t have the right to put other living beings in a state of distress just so we can have fun.

You shouldn’t be bringing living things into an unsuitable environment. Dogs and other pets are bred for humans and brought into the human environment for human needs. That’s on you as a pet owner.
As I said in my earlier post, I have a great deal of sympathy for guide dogs, wild animals and those people who have conditions that mean they cannot understand or tolerate the fireworks.

ETA: however unpalatable it may seem, by having a pet you have “ put other living beings in a state of distress just so you can have fun”

takealettermsjones · 02/11/2025 22:25

The sale of fireworks to the general public is objectively preposterous. If I tried to buy a grenade I'd be on some sort of list, but I can buy a Power Force Dynamite High Voltage selection pack down my local Tesco with barely a question.

My DS is terrified of dogs. Can they be banned please? They are year around too, not just a certain time of year.

Or do we all have to accept that some things might scare our children/pets but it doesn't mean they should be banned?

Absolutely this

What are you babbling on about?? Unsuitable environments??

abouttogetlynched · 02/11/2025 22:26

Also to add, on our local FB page there’s people saying to remember that there are service men and women suffering with PTSD who fireworks might be triggering for. Again, don’t doubt it, but where was the mock outrage for these people in the 80s and 90s? Why only now is that a concern? Although only concern I’m sure for people who have never served in a war or know anyone suffering PTSD from fireworks.

mayGodhelpusall · 02/11/2025 22:26

I don't know, I've never had a pet that gave an arse about fireworks. My Cavatzu sleeps through them😴my cat seems a bit more alert for about 5 seconds and then carries on with her day. I am aware that not everybody's pets are like this though.

Grammarnut · 02/11/2025 22:27

I love fireworks. I have a new dog and he has barked at all the fireworks and I have said it's ok, I'm here, it's fireworks. I probably wouldn't take him to a display but we have had fireworks here since mid October - Diwali - and it won't stop for another week, and he seems to be fine. He barks at cars so I think fireworks are just another thing to bark at.

My advice re possible distress is to feed dogs/cats a large and succulent meal in the early evening so they are sleepy, make sure cats are in the house and to put TV/radio on loudly but something soothing.

I'm off to walk my dog now, fireworks or no (probably fireworks).

CommonAsMucklowe · 02/11/2025 22:28

MD2020and10LambertandButlerPlease · 02/11/2025 20:40

My dogs are terrified and so is my dd. It affects dd in particular for days afterwards.

Fireworks should be the organised displays only. The public shouldn't be allowed to buy them.

Wouldn't you complain about selfish people impacting your life and terrifying your kids every year so they can see a few lights in the sky?

Presumably, nobody was posting on Facebook about concern for them in the 80s and 90s as Facebook was only launched in 2004.
Not sure though. Just a guess.
