To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

I am beyond sick of fireworks, it is every bloody night, it began with Dwali and will now carry on until past new year, so that is around 12 fucking weeks of nightly noise. If people let them off on the expected dates, Dwali, Nov 5, and New Year's eve then of course pet owners and parents of very young children can prepare but to have to endure it every night until around 3 Jan is too much. Last night there were some youths out on the street just chucking fireworks around at gone midnight, Sick of it. I sound meanspirited and I love pretty fireworks but they are not the ones that appeal to the anti social sort

No problem.

My son is largely scared of dogs because one jumped in his wheelchair, barking and scratched him whilst the owner looked on laughing.

It's so bad that he'll attempt to go in the road, oncoming traffic or not, to get away from any dog we come across. So he's lost some of his independence in his wheelchair now too because of inconsiderate dog owners.

Just awful.

Where did I say they have to stay at home??
Stop twisting things to suit your narrative. Read what I said again.

I simply said that when people who don’t like dogs go home, they are ‘safe’ from the thing they don’t like… but dogs who are terrified of fireworks do not get the luxury of feeling safe in their home.
Nobody Should feel distressed in their own home. Nobody. Human or animal.

No, your hyperbole makes you sound a bit nuts. I am not sure you even understand what you wrote.

SheinIsShite · 02/11/2025 22:02

Fireworks have been around for 1000 years. It's funny how it's only in the last 25 years people and their animals haven't been able to cope.

Dogs shit outside my house, cat shit in my garden, sick of barking dogs, funny how people are quick to moan about fireworks when their animals are pains all year round. Pick up your dog shit then I'll start showing empathy.
No I will not stop enjoying fireworks because of your pets.

Very flawed argument when you consider everything you, as a human, do to the land that other animals live on.
dog shit being left is a people problem not a dog problem and they shouldn’t be subjected to terror because of that.
you are no more entitled to parts of this land and your way of life than animals are.

I'm actually quite grateful to Mumsnet to know that so many people hate fireworks. I had literally no idea and got to my mid-50s without ever meeting someone in real life who felt this way. I've let fireworks off loads of times without really considering that people didn't like them. I do buy the quiet ones out of consideration for my neighbours and only let them off on the 5th of November and NYE, not random other times, because I'm not a dickhead, but over the years I have owned four dogs and as many cats, none of whom have been bothered.

I used to live in a country where fireworks were let off in the streets on NYE - into busy crowds and at bus stops, all considered to be perfectly normal. That was a bit hairy, so I would advise checking before you travel.

Tigergirl80 · 02/11/2025 22:04

They do seem to be getting louder to be fair. They were never as loud as they are now when I was a child. The people at the back of us do a really long display on bonfire night and new year. What really annoys me is every night for a few weeks after they will set random one’s every half an hour or so. Wtf is the point in that?

Bundleflower · 02/11/2025 22:04

Screamingabdabz · 02/11/2025 21:21

There were 31,920 dog attacks on people recorded in England and Wales in 2024 and 16 deaths from dog attacks this year.

There were an estimated 2000 injuries treated in A&E last from fireworks, many of those were from sparklers.

I think I’ll take my chances with the firework lovers myself.

Right… but people own dogs 52 weeks of the year. Presumably, people let off fireworks for a maximum of a week. If we multiply the 2000 injuries you cited by the whole year, that would be the equivalent of 104,000 injuries.
I think I’ll take my chances with people who aren’t thick myself.

Emiliilia · 02/11/2025 22:04

YABU I am sick of all the random fireworks.

Emiliilia · 02/11/2025 22:05

Sorry - YANBU ofc

Sick of folk that have pets in unsuitable surroundings.
Your pet is anxious because it doesn't belong in a 3 bed semi.
Yes there will be noise, kids, fireworks, cars, bikes. Life proceeds with or without precious kitty/doggy.
Maybe dog owners woukd like less noise from fireworks
I would like less noise from dogs.
Everyone has to put up.

And the wildlife and livestock that die? Are they just being precious also?

Whaleandsnail6 · 02/11/2025 22:08

It is easy to buy quiet and low noise fireworks so I do think people who buy the ones that create a huge bang are antisocial and selfish, since there is now a way to enjoy the light explosion of the firework whilst trying to quieten the noise, which is the part many people and animals find distressing

Id love to see fireworks banned from general public sale as I think they are dangerous but we can't have everything we want in life

The difference here is that you can teach your son not to be scared of dogs.
I’d struggle to teach an elderly rescue dog, a cow or a fucking owl just to stick it for your sons entertainment.

He's always been afraid of dogs and since he suddenly became disabled and is now a wheelchair user, he feels even more vulnerable around dogs because now he can't run away from them.

Not everyone can be taught how not to be scared of dogs. Just as not all pets can be taught not to be scared of fireworks.

What a lovely comment.

im not going to give my location but yes we can hear them at 1am INSIDE when we’re trying to sleep, for week.

and I’ve said it before…..it’s not just dogs!!!!!

Fit some double glazing maybe?

TempestTost · 02/11/2025 21:45

I do think it's interesting that 40 years ago no one complained about their pets and fireworks, whereas now it is a common complaint.

I can't imagine animals'opinions on it have really changed. It's people that are different. It's now a "thing" to complain about.

Probably because fireworks were mostly restricted to one night a year, weren't as freely available to the public to buy and not as weapons grade noisy as the ones on sale now.

NormasArse · 02/11/2025 22:09

You tell me how to ‘prepare’.

We shut all curtains; have the TV on loud; give calming tablets to the dog who is affected (the other two don’t mind it).

She still loses control of her bladder because she is so frightened. She races around the room in terror, even though she starts on the sofa with me.

We try to go away somewhere without fireworks on the night of the local display, but a couple of years we haven’t been able to. It’s also a big expense to do that.

If it’s affecting our dog so much, what is it doing to wild animals and farm animals?

Ive seen silent fireworks set to music- it was stunning. I don’t understand why the bangs are necessary, when they can be made without.

That’s a shame. I’m sorry he’s experiencing that. However, that doesn’t retract whatsoever from my statement.
Your son wouldn’t suffer if fireworks were the soundless sort. Animals therefore wouldn’t suffer also. Surely nobody loses out?

Forgetsheepcountducklings · 02/11/2025 22:10

I would be in favour of organised displays only and don't wish distress on any animal.

But it is hugely hypocritical of dog owners on this thread to pretend they care about wildlife, livestock, environment etc given the massive damage dogs do to those every day.

Wtf do we have to have fireworks a week before bonfire night, you have clearly never seen an animal terrified/injured due to fireworks.
If it was just 5th November it would maybe be a little easier for these terrified animals but it's every night for a month, then new year,it was Dwarli last week its never ending

Nope, not nuts. Sorry to disappoint you.
I just feel very strongly that we don’t have the right to put other living beings in a state of distress just so we can have fun.

Skyflyinghigh · 02/11/2025 22:13

They have been going off for weeks where I am. My cat couldn’t give a flying one and watches them but I’ve never seen the point of them myself. Can’t get excited by a loud bang and 2 seconds of sparkles. I do feel sorry for people and animals affected by them though

My son doesn't care about fireworks. He isn't scared of them but isn't fussed about seeing any either.

As I've said, I can see arguments for display fireworks only but the arguments for scared dogs are many of the things my child feels when he sees a dog and that's not just for a short amount of time. Unfortunately dogs are everywhere now.

I think you’ll find that it’s only other peoples dogs who are badly behaved. 😉
