To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

Lots of people and animals don’t like fireworks for very good reasons. Just because your family likes them doesn’t mean everyone should have to put up with it.

Lots of people don’t like all sorts of things for all sorts of reasons. I’m in favour of controlling fireworks because I don’t think just anyone should be able to buy them but banning is excessive. I don’t like horses but does that mean they should be banned despite plenty of people enjoying them? Absolutely not.

It’s pathetic and weird how a grown arsed adult seems to be so angry that some children are scared of dogs.

Chill bro.

Agree two very strange things to be angry about. Particularly the poor children afraid of dogs WTF?! 😂Hope she doesn't have kids!

Presumably, nobody was posting on Facebook about concern for them in the 80s and 90s as Facebook was only launched in 2004.
Not sure though. Just a guess.

I think the overall point is we were all far less bothered in the 90s.

There was less “won’t someone think of the….”

If you've read my comments instead of just latching on to this one, you'll know that I'm thinking about the children who have to be scared every day of the year due to the fact that dogs are now seemingly allowed almost everywhere.

and again, if you've read my comments, I've also agreed that it isn't just about dogs and some arguments are absolutely valid when it comes to public displays only.

Maybe be more clear then! I’m not going to read all your comments.

I have kids who are scared of dogs. It does not mean I celebrate bonfire night!

Plus, it’s the 5th November. Not every bloody weekend. So no. There are no valid discussions. Just people defending those who over charge and under deliver. You know it.

What are you babbling on about?? Unsuitable environments??

You’re not very bright, are you?

pittapat · 02/11/2025 22:32

Ok so your kids liked them but her pets don’t. This is why debates occur, because people generally are too self centred to understand anyone else’s POV.

The issue with fireworks is that any old wanker can go and buy them from a supermarket. They are, in my opinion, really anti social and usually quite shit. My pets aren’t bothered by them but it’s still annoying to have to listen to them being let off close to your home at a time and duration that a selfish neighbour has deemed convenient for them. If I had pets or young kids that were upset by them I imagine I’d be getting even more ragey.

Organised displays usually have plenty of warning, a set start and finish time and they are better quality fireworks so people should just stick with them rather than pissing off your neighbours with some low budget ones in your back yard.

I think you sound like a very inconsiderate neighbour op.

But it’s more that nobody gave that a second thought then, and only now must we consider these poor people. They existed then too and no doubt more people who served in wars were alive 30-40 tests ago than now. Nobody was moaning about fireworks in the 80s and 90s full stop, it’s only now that they’ve got social media to moan about it that they are doing so, I doubt they had an issue with it before.

Getamoveon2024 · 02/11/2025 22:33

Because they are dogs, so I am therefore unable to explain, in a way that they will understand, that the tosser next door needs to let off nuclear type bombs once a year? There is literally no way to prepare them for that. Other than moving, to somewhere with literally no neighbours, which happily, we have just done. This weekend has been blissfully silent and my dogs, plus all the local wildlife are perfectly happy.

rrrrrreatt · 02/11/2025 22:34

How do you prepare an animal for fireworks? You can’t reason with a cat or dog, especially if they’ve had bad experiences in the past.

I didn’t say they should be banned, however, I don’t think something as dangerous as fireworks should be sold in the supermarket to anyone over 16. Where I live they are regularly thrown at passersby in the street, at emergency service workers or at cars.

they really should be restricted both in where they are sold and what dates they can be used.

But fireworks used to be one night of the year, generally. Now bonfire night seems to go on for a week.
Also, I think people are much more clued up on mental health, trauma, the effects on wildlife etc. I’m not sure what you’re actually complaining about. Are you annoyed people want to be more considerate?

wintersgold · 02/11/2025 22:35

A very fair complaint. It's horrific for pets and wildlife.

I’d hazard a guess that I’m far brighter than you 😂

If you mean that humans shouldn’t breed/have dogs incase they can’t cope with fireworks that already exist in society, then I could argue that humans shouldn’t breed children incase those children are scared of the dogs that already exist in society.
But of course, that would be ridiculous.

EveryDayisFriday · 02/11/2025 22:35

I love fireworks, my reactive Dachshund really doesn't. I've tried ear muffs, last year we drugged her with strong drugs from the vets. I've tried training her, but the bangs set her off no matter how comforting/ distracting we are.

topsecretcyclist · 02/11/2025 22:36

I think fireworks should only be available for properly organised events. Why are are people allowed to by explosives when normally they are forbidden? The people opposite us used to set them off on the pavement outside their house ffs. I had to report them to the police several times, because it's an obvious danger to people walking or driving down our street.

My cat doesn't give a shit about the noise, our old dog didn't care either. I still think they should only be allowed for organised events, on the date of, or nearest weekend to Diwali, Guy Fawkes night, and New Years Eve.

Firefly1987 · 02/11/2025 22:36

People are just far more selfish now, their happiness trumps everyone and everything else, and they DGAF about others' distress. OP proved that-her kids are happy so that's all that matters. It's like how people just expect everyone to wear earplugs constantly now the minute they leave the house (or even in the house) because other people and their kids should be allowed to make as much noise as they like. Madness.

I’m not the one complaining though.
No, just that people always seem to have something to moan about or be ‘triggered’ by.
I’m scared of spiders, but I’m not posting on FB asking everyone to remove their Halloween decorations.

Careful with that common sense now. 😉

CantBreathe90 · 02/11/2025 22:37

YANBU OP. We've had fireworks night for literally 100s of years - cats and dogs have managed every century previously 🙄 And if people are worried about having pets distressed by normal things, they could have chosen not to get pets!

There are already so many pressures in life generally, I really CBA getting worked up about a cat's preferences.

Fyi - there's a valerian root calming spray for anyone interested, who might need it for their animals in the coming weeks - I spray it round my rabbit's carry case when they have to go to the vets. Works a treat.

jbm16 · 02/11/2025 22:39

Exactly, it's not bonefire night.. I don't think people would mind so much if it were one or two nights, but it goes on for weeks.

I think it you had seen an animal pretrified, shaking with fear you might feel otherwise.

Fitfunfab · 02/11/2025 22:39

Hi I never moan about anything but since I suffered from acoustic trauma which has left me with permanent reactive tinnitus and hearing loss and the worry of constantly making it worse around noise I have to worry about noise now and I love fireworks and music but are a lot more sympathetic to people with ear issues and other sensory issues

No, clearly not very bright.
Dogs are bred and sold as pets for your own comfort and pleasure to be kept in a human environment.
You don’t want to accept some of the responsibility for the distress your dog is feeling.
