To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

Fireworks should be banned from public purchase. There should be more scheduled community displays for Diwali, Bonfire Night, NYE etc.
Better displays than the shit Catherine wheels going wonky in the back garden, good opportunity for communities to come together, good for local businesses and can be properly managed by emergency services. Then they would be less likely to be in residential areas and people can get proper warning to make arrangements.

Goldeh · 02/11/2025 20:49

There's a world of difference though between fireworks on 5th November, when you know they're going to be going off from as soon as it gets dark until around 11pm/midnight and can plan accordingly versus random fireworks at all times of the day and night from around 24th October through to 10th or 11th of November.

And that's not even mentioning the excessively loud boom ones that make it sound like you're in an actual fucking war zone rather than a residential street in Somewhere-shire.

I entirely agree with you: fireworks are a magic and completely altruistic thing that people have enjoyed for millennia. People have also had pets for millennia and the two have managed to coexist so I’m not sure why now some people’s nervous dogs are thought to be more important than the millions of people who love fireworks.

They haven't co-existed. Many pets, horses, livestock and wildlife have died as a direct result! Think you'd change your tune sharpisj if you were suddenly faced with thousands of pounds worth of vet bills!

I don't get it. It's the same every year and every year people act surprised and horrified. You have plenty of notice so not sure why you're so shocked

Didn't have notice when our neighbours decided to start randomly setting them off tonight in a tiny back garden right next to our fence. But then as I have a job to go to tomorrow it being Sunday night and they don't, guess they literally don't give a toss.

Maybe because it’s selfish and dangerous.

I’m sure you’d be the first to complain if it bothered you. But since it doesn’t affect you then it doesn’t matter, I guess?

You make an important point about the need for more community displays, at a time when many LAs are reducing the number/not doing them for cost reasons. Given that the cultural attachment exists and is evidently not going to disappear any time soon, tackling the issue requires greater availability of organised displays.

NewHome2026 · 02/11/2025 20:51

A lot of miserable people on this thread - where do you live that fireworks are so unbearably loud INSIDE your home?

FWIW I do think we should go to public displays only for safety reasons - new build estates with all their gardens packed in back to back together are not the place to be setting off explosives but I could not give one iota of a shit if your dog is upset. People’s enjoyment ahead of pets. Always.

My DS is terrified of dogs. Can they be banned please? They are year around too, not just a certain time of year.

Or do we all have to accept that some things might scare our children/pets but it doesn't mean they should be banned?

This!!

Anewuser · 02/11/2025 20:52

Having just watched a video with a group of idiots setting off fireworks at a bus, in a city centre, I can see no reason for fireworks to be sold all year round, or to the general public.

As others have said, where I live we hear them at any excuse. A wedding, a party, Diwali, hallloween, bonfire night, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, the list goes on.

I still don’t understand why they have to be so loud either.

And, I’m only thinking about how they annoy me, waking me at midnight etc. This isn’t a specific time they’re set off so it’s impossible to warn children or pets, let alone wildlife.

Pollqueen · 02/11/2025 20:52

I don't know where you all live but I have had no fireworks at all. We get them on 5 Nov, a couple of organised displays and a few back garden jobs. Never, ever see them at any other time. It's bizarre 😳

People have stopped treating their dogs like dogs and this is the outcome

PearlRiver · 02/11/2025 20:53

What a good idea to ‘prepare for it’. I will have a conversation with my dog now. I’m sure that will help over the next few evenings and he won’t be terrified. Should have thought of that earlier myself.

I didn't say they should be banned, I said they should be the organised displays only.

If you have problem with dogs you can campaign for them to be sold to people with licences only, or you can choose to go to one of the infinite numbers of dog free places. Or you can choose to sit peacefully in your home where they won't affect your child.

I can't sit in my home peacefully with idiots setting off fireworks for weeks on end, there is nowhere to go away from them.... but carry on thinking that you did something with your stupid 'point'.

Pricelessadvice · 02/11/2025 20:54

If they just went off on one night- bonfire night- people would have a better chance of planning.
But I cannot give all my animals drugs every single evening for 10 days.
We’ve had fireworks going off nearby every single night now since Friday. I assume the same will happen this week into next weekend.
How do I plan to keep all our animals safe and calm for that length of time?
We have a yard of horses, dogs and cats.

I have sedatives for my dogs from the vet, but only bought for bonfire night and one other day. I can’t just drug my dogs every single night.

They should be allowed on one night only.

Ponoka7 · 02/11/2025 20:54

The noise level of fireworks has got ridiculous. That's the issue. When I read the comments on FB etc there's always Italians saying that their fireworks are virtually silent. It's the noise that we need to address.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/11/2025 20:55

I love fireworks and my dogs ignore them however I still think there should only be silent ones allowed. There’s no way they can’t make just as spectacular ones as the noisy ones.

its wildlife that we should be concerned about. I don’t want all the animals in the fields terrified Sad

CurlewKate · 02/11/2025 20:56

My friend’s horse was fatally injured when she was panicked by fireworks. But hey, you and your kids like them, so that’s OK then.

Sadly some dogs will not.

Every year, dogs die as a result of fireworks. Every single year.
That is a family’s beloved pet.

justalittlebitofrain · 02/11/2025 20:30

Right, and how do you think people can prepare animas for that?

Have some fucking empathy.

we use simple desensitisation training - it’s worked with every dog we’ve had. It’s pretty simple, though probably a bit more time intensive than posting passive aggressive comments on local facebook groups.

In which case let's say dogs should only be available in an organised capacity. After all, they increasingly encroach on public spaces so it's increasingly difficult to get away from them.

Fact is, the points you make could just as well be flipped back. The poster who pointed that out has indeed done something.

IwishIhadcheese · 02/11/2025 20:57

We are surrounded by farmland so no fireworks near us. Friends in our nearest village are coming to stay with their dogs on the 5th (planned village display) and the weekend after (village idiots who do it from their gardens).

I don’t mind planned displays.

sleepwouldbenice · 02/11/2025 20:57

themerchentofvenus · 02/11/2025 20:32

It's polite to let people know if you will be letting off fireworks nearby. It gives people time to make sure their pets are comfortable or kids who also don't like fireworks.

This. I am in no way saying they should be banned. But they do go on an awful lot longer (fortnight?) than they used to.
Its just courtesy really

BluebellsareBlue · 02/11/2025 20:58

I think, as you have written, a week before bonfire night is key here. It’s THE WEEK BEFORE!!! My German shepherd is a nervous wreck and we have tried everything in the past but his only respite is diazepam from the vet. Fireworks, without warning is antisocial behaviour in my opinion. We have some considerate neighbours who post on the local FB around a week in advance and the day and times when it will happen. I can thereafter visit the vet for a prescription having been given notice.
i do hope your children grow up with more empathy than you are displaying instead of being entitled and non empathetic
