To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

You do know their are noiseless fireworks, right?

I think those that bang should be banned.

It's not just our pets that suffer, but animals in nature and of those animals, people. I know loads of people who hate fireworks because of the noise.

I honestly hate posts like yours that have zero recognition that humans are just 1 of many animals on this planet, we have the power to do good, so do good and stop having a pop at people who worry for tgeur family members when fireworks frighten them. Shame on you @Sophiehoney

Minnie798 · 02/11/2025 21:50

Fireworks annoy me.
Been going off for over a week now, are un-necessarily loud and any idiot can buy them and set them off wherever and whenever they please.
Organised/ planned displays only would be so much better. There's literally no need for them to be going off for a fortnight.

Nah, your point was just shit.

Not only did you make an incorrect claim about nobody reacting as your pet does, you also completely failed to take into account that home cant be assumed to feel safe when you know you have to go in and out of it. Humans have a greater understanding of this than dogs. A dog doesn't know it'll be Guy Fawkes again in 12 months, whereas part of a humans experience of a fear like dogs is the knowledge they will continue to be constantly exposed as part of normal life.

Not to mention the fact that houses are no more sound proof from dogs barking than they are from fireworks.

MissyPants · 02/11/2025 21:51

Dogs shit outside my house, cat shit in my garden, sick of barking dogs, funny how people are quick to moan about fireworks when their animals are pains all year round. Pick up your dog shit then I'll start showing empathy.
No I will not stop enjoying fireworks because of your pets.

Sunshineandoranges · 02/11/2025 21:52

We were looking after my daughters dog yesterday and the poor thing was shaking with fear while the fireworks were going off. She still seemed nrevous this morning snd was reluctant to go out into thrgarden.

JenniferBooth · 02/11/2025 21:52

Well @Sophiehoney Im sick of people moaning about the cost of living crisis and then spunking money on fireworks.

Pricelessadvice · 02/11/2025 21:52

I’m leaving this thread because I am so angry about how many people get their kicks out of terrifying animals.

I will just point out that if you are frightened of dogs, or have noisy neighbourhood dogs, you have a PEOPLE problem, not a dog problem. A dog is just being a dog. It’s the owners of the dog you have a problem with.

So yeh, we have something in common after all. Our hatred of selfish people.

So dogs are allowed to be scared of fireworks but children aren't allowed to be scared of dogs?

The reason my son is terrified of dogs is due to being attacked by one, whilst sitting playing in the park. Dog off lead, owner a good 200m away and no recall. Until that point he was fine with dogs, it took us weeks to get him to go back to the park at the age of 3, this was 6 years ago, he is still very jumpy around dogs who are not on a lead, we have worked hard to help him not be scared. Neighbours moved in 6 months ago, we have had a nightmare as they have 2 very yappy dogs who are let out at 2am his bedroom window is near their garden so it wakes him and he is scared.

Nothing to do with parenting both of us had dogs as children, both very comfortable around dogs, only reason we don't have one is due to being out at work.

Nice to know you think he is pathetic when it was and is still caused by rubbish owners.

Yep, this too. The flaws in the poster's argument are matched only by their arrogance.

My DS is terrified of dogs. Can they be banned please? They are year around too, not just a certain time of year.

Or do we all have to accept that some things might scare our children/pets but it doesn't mean they should be banned?

The difference here is that you can teach your son not to be scared of dogs.
I’d struggle to teach an elderly rescue dog, a cow or a fucking owl just to stick it for your sons entertainment.

SleeplessInWherever · 02/11/2025 21:55

Bonfire need is midweek, I’m not really sure why it’d be a surprise that both weekends surrounding it have fireworks. The public displays here are split across both.

Our son doesn’t like fireworks (autistic, noise sensitive etc) and has absolutely no idea that it’s coming because he doesn’t recognise days nevermind months.

But - it’s a few days over a few weeks a year. He doesn’t like sunlight either, and we have that every day. He doesn’t like dogs, but does like parks. Doesn’t like getting his hair washed, but has a bath every day.

So unless we’re gonna do away with everything that could cause him a meltdown, or somehow get rid of…. daytime. I can live with fireworks.

FemWoman · 02/11/2025 21:55

Ncforthiscms · 02/11/2025 20:32

Fireworks should be banned, with only silent light displays allowed.
Poor animals & vulnerable people who have to put up with it.....not just 1 night for Bonfire Night but from Diwali till new years these days.

This.
I dread fireworks.
Babies, pets, vulnerable people suffering from lack of regulations.

So sorry about your lovely dog @BluebellsareBlue 💐

There are some nasty, sadistic people on this thread tonight, it's shameful.

Harrowr · 02/11/2025 21:58

I live a very small life. No friends. I stay at home mostly and do my crafts.

The one special thing in my life is my dog. Unfortunately he has terminal cancer and recently had a leg amputated.

The surgery took place just before Diwali. Awful timing. He can barely move. He has not been able to do his nightly wees due to the fireworks.

He has had so many accidents and it is massively distressing to him. I don’t care as I will clean up any mess he makes. But my poor boy finds it distressing.
Seeing my injured, scared dog whining in our garden too afraid to move has been hell. I was out on the ground with him for an hour one night. Pissing it down it was. All I could do was keep him and covered and tell him it was ok. He is too heavy for me to pick up. I’m distraught and exhausted.

Ocelotfeet27 · 02/11/2025 21:58

I'd ban them except for organised displays. My neighbours when I was a child had a few drinks then set off fireworks on new years eve. Only they didn't stake them down properly and a rocket bounced backwards into their house and exploded in their baby's bedroom. Luckily baby was fine but it could easily not have been if it had been in a different position in the room, the curtains caught fire and there was lots of fire damage. They are dangerous, aside from the noise disturbance.

Surely just polite to tell your neighbours you're planning a display and timings so they can take their pets away if they are sensitive, no other way to prepare is there?

'I like them so I think everyone who doesn't is a whinger'. Great emotional intelligence there bud.

Buzzlightfear · 02/11/2025 21:58

God people are horrible 'big lights go bang bang 🤩 and fuck the wildlife/pets/children/elderly/those with PTSD etc etc'

My dog couldn't actually give a shit about fireworks, but my grandma when she had dementia was terrified of them. But your kids liked them so it's all good.

Bonfire night is on one night of the year, anything outside of that should be given notice to those round about or better yet just don’t do it. Go to larger organised ones instead of blowing your money up into the air for a tiny little snap crackle and pop

cocoromo · 02/11/2025 21:59

Unfortunately it’s quite difficult to communicate to animals what fireworks are, due to the language barrier, so pretty hard to prepare them. Also if it was just the one night it would be one thing, however they go in for weeks on ended where I live and they do cause major distress to some people and animals. Most people are not complaining just to be spoil sports.
I love fireworks, however I think they should be banned from general public use as there are just too many irresponsible and thoughtless people about.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 02/11/2025 21:59

I am a fan of an organised display. I went to one on Saturday which was great. Everyone knows it’s happening, it’s at the far end of the park so less of an impact on residents.

I do think it’d be nice to let neighbours know but it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I'm so sorry, I hope he is able to be more mobile soon and the noise stops!

No problem.

My son is largely scared of dogs because one jumped in his wheelchair, barking and scratched him whilst the owner looked on laughing.

It's so bad that he'll attempt to go in the road, oncoming traffic or not, to get away from any dog we come across. So he's lost some of his independence in his wheelchair now too because of inconsiderate dog owners.

Mary28 · 02/11/2025 22:01

I don't think you should have a fireworks display in your garden unless you're on a few acres to be honest. If it's in a housing estate I think that's mental.
