To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

I’m scared of dogs. We’re not going to ban dogs because people are scared of them.

LouH1981 · 02/11/2025 21:37

It’s pretty horrendous watching your pet tremble, cower and/or whine etc for nights on end because it has no understanding of whether there will be another bang or not. My neighbour appreciates any notice so that he can give his dog a mild sedative 😞
There are horses in a field opposite us who spend all night running around the field in fear.
I do feel pretty sorry for all the animals who suffer on Fireworks Night.

IsntItDarkOut · 02/11/2025 21:37

we know someone who used to run the local big display. He says they are all much much louder than they were 20 years ago. There is no need. The point is to look at them, not for everyone miles around to fucking listen to them.

Awobabobob · 02/11/2025 21:37

I was in huge traffic jam last night on the m23 thanks to horses literally running up the m23 against traffic because they were spooked by fireworks

HelenaWaiting · 02/11/2025 21:38

Sorry, OP, I did try to prepare but, try as I might, I can't persuade my dog to keep her earplugs in.

lighteningthequeen · 02/11/2025 21:38

I agree it should be limited to public displays only. The average reading age for an adult in the UK is about that of a ten year old. I find it absolutely wild that fireworks are allowed to be sold to the public.

Ridiculous comment - it’s just good sense to be at least a little bit wary of dogs considering they literally maul people to death sometimes

Very silly comment.

Most people’s scared of dogs when out is not distressed for hours, hiding under a table shaking, hyperventilating, losing control of their bowel/bladder function… let’s be honest.
So no, you cannot compare the two.
My dog is frightened of bikes. But the bike passes for a few moments on a walk and then disappears. Dog haters escape dogs by going to their safe dog-free house.
My dog’s house isn’t very ‘safe’ to them when there are fireworks going off. They cannot escape the noise. Their safe place is no longer safe. This makes their distress even worse.

Anyone using that comparison is frankly a bit thick.

Tbf, it’s very hard to avoid dogs these days if you are a “dog hater” and it’s a bit harsh to say that someone has to stay at home if they want to avoid dogs. I say this as someone who really likes dogs (just don’t want one as a pet).

I’ve had several dogs and cats over the years. None have shown any sign of being distressed. I love fireworks. I’d hat to see them banned or restricted to overpriced ticketed events.

Realistically, there would need to be provision and subsidy for free organised events if we were to seriously try and limit people's legal ability to buy fireworks for private use.

These people don’t care.
They won’t feel any ounce of sympathy or sadness over looking at that photo. They will just be happy they’ve had fun looking at pretty lights and listening to bangs. Animals are just collateral damage to their frivolities. They’ll just blame the owner for not ‘training’ the horse.

Yes, it's a lot thick to think just go to and stay in your house is any kind of answer.

I can assure you, some absolutely react in a similar way. Especially disabled children.

It's also 365 days of the year, not just a few weeks of the year. You can also hear barking dogs in dog free houses just as you can hear fireworks which aren't in your house.

I don't hate dogs, I hate the fact that they are everywhere and I hate the fact that so many have terrible owners.

My dogs are terrified and so is my dd. It affects dd in particular for days afterwards.

Fireworks should be the organised displays only. The public shouldn't be allowed to buy them.

Wouldn't you complain about selfish people impacting your life and terrifying your kids every year so they can see a few lights in the sky?

Edited

No because I realise the world doesn't revolve around my kids and I'm not entitled to police others activities.

Where did I say they have to stay at home??
Stop twisting things to suit your narrative. Read what I said again.

I simply said that when people who don’t like dogs go home, they are ‘safe’ from the thing they don’t like… but dogs who are terrified of fireworks do not get the luxury of feeling safe in their home.
Nobody Should feel distressed in their own home. Nobody. Human or animal.

I do think it's interesting that 40 years ago no one complained about their pets and fireworks, whereas now it is a common complaint.

I can't imagine animals'opinions on it have really changed. It's people that are different. It's now a "thing" to complain about.

MadameTwoSwords · 02/11/2025 21:14

Fireworks are a couple of nights a year.

We have to put up with your smelly, barking, obnoxious pets in our public and social spaces all year round.

If only! As demonstrated by this thread, this simply isn’t true. There’s actually a 2-3 week window during October/November within which it’s apparently acceptable for fireworks (either in isolation or as part of a large, sustained display) to be let off, anywhere and at any time (the mandatory 11pm cutoff seemingly doesn’t apply in the suburb of my North Western Town!) and with no/little warning.

Given I knew in advance of two planned/organised local displays last night and another for next Saturday, I have chosen to put my dogs in kennels this weekend and next. Thankfully the kennels are in a semi rural setting and it’s where they usually stay when we holiday, so I know they’ll be ok and suffer significantly less stress. I’m more than prepared to swallow that extra expense to ensure the wellbeing of my dogs but only because I’ve been lucky enough to have the forewarning to allow me to make those provisions. What I couldn’t have planned for was my neighbour opposite choosing to host a fireworks extravaganza, with 3 discrete firework releases, lasting past midnight last night.

I get some people don’t like dogs. Equally, some people don’t like other people (whether justified or not). Surely what we can agree on is that a little bit of consideration and empathy really does go a long way - it isn’t mutually exclusive. Dog owners should be considerate and respectful in the spaces they take their dogs and people setting off fireworks should give thought to the people (and animals etc) around them.

LoveBluey · 02/11/2025 21:47

I'm also fed up of people on social media complaining about not being given warning about garden fireworks. Whether you agree with them or not (I personally wouldn’t have them) the point is you can’t reasonably warn every house in the vicinity that would be able to hear them.

To be clear the thing that annoys me is people saying if they had warning they would have taken precautions to help their pets - but why not just take those precautions over these 2 weekends anyway given it’s so likely there will be loud fireworks.

If people just wanted to complain about the selfishness of fireworks I’d find that easier than the ones complaining about not being forewarned.

Namechange2567 · 02/11/2025 21:48

They are too much! Thankfully my dog and 5 cats don’t care but my neighbour has a son who quite literally shits his pants. It’s been going on since September. I wish I could share a video of the noise here to show the extend

CausalInference · 02/11/2025 21:48

My kids love them too and rush to the windows when they hear them! It is literally 2 weekends and the main event every year, I'm pretty sure you can put some music on to drown them out, it's an annual thing so you'd think people could plan ahead for it rather than post the same moan on the neighbourhood page (we had the exact same post earlier).

Nah, your point was just shit.

Not only did you make an incorrect claim about nobody reacting as your pet does, you also completely failed to take into account that home cant be assumed to feel safe when you know you have to go in and out of it. Humans have a greater understanding of this than dogs. A dog doesn't know it'll be Guy Fawkes again in 12 months, whereas part of a humans experience of a fear like dogs is the knowledge they will continue to be constantly exposed as part of normal life.

Or fireworks are totally different now compared to what was available to the public back then.
It's not a wee box of Astra fireworks now.
