To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

YABU. My dog pisses herself with fright every time. Nothing helps, we’ve tried it all. We have to go away somewhere remote for the week.

wild animals, livestock, horses die of fright.

And noone needs fireworks! Ban them!

Ban coming into force in the Netherlands (except public displays only), time we did the same.

Kbroughton · 03/11/2025 17:10

Fireworks should be limited to formal licensed premises only. Displays should be published and therefore people can plan for it. My brother has fragil x and is terrified of fireworks. We can manage it for 1 night but the issue is people let them off in their back gardens for about a week and you don't know when or where it's happening. Its terrifying for him I don't want fireworks banned completely, I know people enjoy them. But average jo in the street shouldn't be able to buy them and set them off in his or her garden.

Same could be said for pet ownership. You said it yourself, humans get pets for selfish reasons. There seems to be little thought to the environment or other people and wildlife when people get pets.

That's why people are comparing. There's a lot of double standards.

Very true. If your problem is with selfishness then you'd be equally concerned about fireworks and pet ownership, since both are undertaken because people prioritise their wants over the detriments caused. If however you're unwilling to criticise that, it isn't actually selfishness that bothers you, or indeed detriment to wildlife.

Pets have researched, proven, and quantifiable benefits to mental and physical health, that's without considering service and working dogs.

Show me a firework that can detect someone is about to have a seizure or give a lonely elderly person a reason to carry on living, and I will agree that the two are comparable.

Dogs also tend not to burn down neighbouring properties.

I have never ever heard of fireworks being compared to pets other than Mumsnet in real life. I mean who does that 😄😄🤣

The thread is about pets and fireworks. A comparison is easy to make when pet owners can be just as selfish as those who set off fireworks.

So dogs are just there for what they can do for or give their owners ? Pretty selfish then

This thread is about pets, not service or working dogs. Nobody thinks those should be got rid of and thus there is no need to say you're not considering them.

You will also need to factor in all the substantial detriment that dogs and other pets such as cats cause. This is conspicuously absent in your analysis. Do you not give a shit about, say, wild bird populations?

Sunflower459 · 03/11/2025 17:17

Funnily enough the nightly ‘display’ has just started here. Quarter past five. Daft.

I’d happily see a ban for private back garden firework displays.

me too.

It's laughable. Who in real life talks about comparing pets and fireworks

Fireworks should be banned, with only silent light displays allowed.
Poor animals & vulnerable people who have to put up with it.....not just 1 night for Bonfire Night but from Diwali till new years these days.

This. It's not just pets, it's wildlife too, and don't get me started with military veterans with PTSD!

Yes, exactly. Humans are selfish, including pet owners because ultimately, they have pets because they want pets and spare little thought about what negativity they may bring to other people, the environment or wildlife.

Same as those who do fireworks.

Earmuffs are a thing

Oh wow why didn't I think of that.........of course! That will really solve the problem.

As a proud Hindu I love me some fireworks. We do them for Diwali and finish at around 11pm these days

I live in a urban area so nothing to worry about horses and livestock. If a few pets feel scared, obviously that's unfortunate for them but they'll get over it. They are just some pets.

I understand the point of ex-servicemen with PTSD but they are a tiny part of the population and yes while I feel sorry for them, should we all restrict our festivities because a very very small % of the population have PTSD?

I never remember fireworks for/or Diwali, is this a new thing or just more Hindu populations in other areas?

Catsknowbest · 03/11/2025 17:35

MummytoE · 03/11/2025 16:55

I'll stick to the fireworks thanks!!. If people's pets can't handle it then they need to be trained better. Plenty of things make loud bangs, time to just get on with it!

🤣 trained better.....dear oh dear

I’m not comparing children to wildlife- the person I replied to did that.

You.

This thread is specifically about how annoying it is that pet people make it all about their doggo being sad

Yes. You said, I could not give one iota of a shit if your dog is upset. People’s enjoyment ahead of pets. Always.’ which was lovely and I wondered if someone that says things like that would give a shit about veterans either?

Weird the way you were happy to make loads of posts doing just that until it was pointed out that you're applying a whopping great double standard.

In real life not Mumsnet or Facebook nobody I know thinks pets are better than children or that fireworks should be banned to save a dogs feelings either.

Behind the annon posts of Facebook and changed names of Mumsnet people say what they wouldn’t in real life because they don’t want to offend or upset their friends and family.

Chinsupmeloves · 03/11/2025 17:43

It's not just pets, what about all the wildlife who have no idea what the extra loud sonic bangs are.
I love fireworks but there's no need for the super loud ones. Also how long it goes in for, wrrks before and after the event.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 03/11/2025 17:44

This type of thread always brings out the 'fuck off I like them' brigade. But when I was small, fireworks were on fireworks night or one weekend, and were significantly quieter than now. Where I am we have had fireworks since last week, all through the weekend and have several displays this coming weekend. I have no idea which days my neighbours are going to set off their fireworks. I have to sedate my dog but just dont know when to do it. That is the main issue for me.

I like fireworks too. But I think you are a dick if you know your neighbours have nervous animals and cant be bothered to tell them when you are going to have them.

The sonic bang… does this also take into account how many of us live under the training flight paths of fighter jets. Amazingly loud and fast and train for hours on end day after day. Rumbling down my chimney booming across the sky. Darting and twisting though mountains shaking all that’s near them.

the wild life still manages to thrive however.

I'm quite happy to say that I think fireworks should be banned, or at the very least be confined to organised displays

It's not caused a fight yet

In fact, lots of people I've spoken to (in Real Life) actually agree with me

PrincessC0nsuelaBananaHammock · 03/11/2025 17:49

Hmm What are we supposed to do? Send our pets on holiday from mid-October to mid-November?
