To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

Perhaps youd like to accidentally familiarise yourself with the facts.

Fireworks are significantly worse for wildlife due to their unpredictable, loud, and startling nature, which causes mass panic, injury, and death in a wide range of species. While dogs also suffer greatly from fireworks, the impact on the broader ecosystem of wildlife—including birds, deer, horses, and small animals—is often more devastating and widespread.
Impact of fireworks on wildlife

  • Mass panic and injury: The loud noises and bright flashes can cause wild animals like birds, deer, and foxes to panic, leading them to run into roads, fences, or other hazards, resulting in injury or death.
  • Disorientation and flight: Birds, in particular, can be driven from their nests and natural habitats, with some flying so far out to sea they cannot return. They are also at high risk of colliding with buildings in the night sky.
  • Environmental contamination: The chemicals used in fireworks pollute the air, soil, and water, harming wildlife and affecting ecosystems long after the display ends.
  • Stress and death: The unpredictable and intermittent loud noises can be more stressful for animals than continuous background noise. For some smaller animals, the explosions can be so overwhelming that they suffer fatal fits.
Impact of dogs on wildlife
  • Predation: Dogs are natural predators, and if they are off-leash in areas where wildlife is present, they can injure or kill animals like rabbits, birds, and other small mammals.
  • Habitat disruption: Even without direct predation, dogs can disrupt wildlife by scaring them from their homes and feeding grounds, leading to stress and displacement.
  • Physical harm: Loose dogs can also harm wildlife through physical attacks or by chasing them into dangerous situations.
Conclusion While both dogs and fireworks can be harmful to wildlife, the unpredictable and wide-ranging effects of fireworks make them the worse threat to the overall ecosystem. They cause stress, injury, and death in a vast number of species, and the environmental contamination they create has long-term consequences. Dogs pose a more localized threat, but the potential for harm is lower compared to the widespread impact of fireworks.

Womp womp.

Perhaps you'd like to familiarise us with some sources, between your womps? Also, don't think you're going to get away with pretending the pet issue is only about dogs. Cats are appalling for wildlife.

Go on... How would you 'ban' pets? How would it work? What would you do?

Very similar could be said about fireworks. Banning them certainly wouldn't stop some people from setting them off anyway just like banning dogs wouldn't stop some people from having dogs anyway.

I would never attempt to ban either fireworks or pets. Both would be unworkable. The reason we're discussing bans is because you advocated for one. And you've still not told us why the impact on wildlife is a reason to ban one but not the other.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 03/11/2025 16:46

When I take over the world, I will be banning all fireworks for private use - they will be available at public, licensed displays only.

What is the purpose of fireworks then? Pets provide comfort, love, support to people. Unconditional love.
What do fireworks bring to the table ?

And hopefully all dogs will be Heath tested working dogs. Failed dogs can be pets only.

Cats will all have to be house/catio cats too.

I have cats and family have dogs so not a hater but they all cause issues.

Oh and can we ban feeding wild pigeons. Also huge fines for dropping litter at the beach attracting gulls.

Mumsnet is so weird to compare pets to fireworks. I never hear this in the real world...

They are the reminder of guy for some.

The celebration of light for others.

Just pretty party things for others.

Apart from when they maul people to death of course.
I love going to fireworks and spending quality time with the family, it's nice tradition and the kids love it

What about the environmental impact? People with post traumatic stress disorder? People who cannot tolerate loud noises?

Told you, humans are selfish and just think about themselves and nobody else or the world around them.

I don't know much about cats and dogs, I'm afraid. Don't have any pets and don't have strong opinions about them.

However, I will absolutely support your plan re feeding pigeons and dropping litter. Not only at the beach either!

Oh wow kids love it. So kids trump everything else. You can have quality time doing something more quieter and not as detrimental to the environment or other people/animals/wildlife.

Totally selfish.

The sooner fireworks are banned for public sale the better. Humans are selfish arseholes.

I'll stick to the fireworks thanks!!. If people's pets can't handle it then they need to be trained better. Plenty of things make loud bangs, time to just get on with it!

Dogs I’d do for the safety of public and frankly their own wellbeing may are too neurotic from poor breeding and have poor owners, Also wildlife.

While working dogs thinking police, farming, deaf, blind and medical alert should stay obviously. Dogs that fail to reach their working potential spayed and they become “rescue” dogs.

Cats for wildlife purposes. Like in some other countries you can only own them if you can keep them on your premises. Also cat shit your neighbours shouldn’t have to clean it up.

I assume everyone who is going on and on about environmental impact and animal welfare is a vegan??

They need to be banned..so cruel on animals 😢

You need to answer my question before I answer any of yours, because you're just deflecting at this point. I've already replied to one that you answered after I posed mine.

If the negative impact on wildlife and the NHS is a reason to ban fireworks, do you agree it's also a reason to ban at least dogs and cats? And if you're going to apply a double standard, tell us why.

Same could be said for pet ownership. You said it yourself, humans get pets for selfish reasons. There seems to be little thought to the environment or other people and wildlife when people get pets.

That's why people are comparing. There's a lot of double standards.

ObelixtheGaul · 03/11/2025 17:02

AutumnalPuffin · 02/11/2025 20:44

I entirely agree with you: fireworks are a magic and completely altruistic thing that people have enjoyed for millennia. People have also had pets for millennia and the two have managed to coexist so I’m not sure why now some people’s nervous dogs are thought to be more important than the millions of people who love fireworks.

To be fair, though, some 40-odd years ago when my parents used to set some off in the back garden, a) you could only buy them in the two weeks around bonfire night and b) it was a Roman candle, a Catherine wheel, a handful of other low level ones that just fizzed and sparkled and one, maybe two big rockets to finish with that weren't anything like as loud as the big display ones. And the kids had sparklers the public information films told us not to pick up by the wrong end.

Home fireworks now have a lot more of the really loud ones. Round here it sounds like a war zone.
