To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

How can a 'local' who wasn't in the house and may not even know the family know that the dog attacked the baby due to fireworks? It's an assumption, not a fact at this point.

Especially since dog attacks happen year round.

Tragic, no matter the cause. Poor baby.

Indeed - totally devastating but complete speculation. The dog should never have been so close to the baby for that to have been able to happen, whatever the cause

I think most of us would be happy if it was just licensed displays that were allowed. Surely then everyone is accommodated for (or as many as can be). People who enjoy fireworks can go and watch them and animal owners can be pre-warned and know exactly when and where displays are happening.

Plus it really would be safer for everyone. The fact that anyone can go into a shop and buy explosives is scary. And setting them off in back gardens which are very close to people’s houses isn’t very neighbourly.

I’d be all for licensed displays. It would be a compromise, at least.

The sonic bang… does this also take into account how many of us live under the training flight paths of fighter jets. Amazingly loud and fast and train for hours on end day after day. Rumbling down my chimney booming across the sky. Darting and twisting though mountains shaking all that’s near them.

the wild life still manages to thrive however.

I can't imagine the wildlife is enjoying that either? I completely empathise though, we now live under a flight path with military training and it's horrendous, hate it! Xx

How about a compromise?

Let’s ban fireworks but only if we ban pet ownership. There is quite an environmental impact with pets, not just poop and bad behaviour but resources used to provide food, pet carriers, litter tray stuff, disposal of waste, plastic toys etc etc

I’ll bet more lives are saved by pet ownership than fireworks.

intrepidpanda · 03/11/2025 20:20

So why would you have a dog around a baby.
You expect others not to set fireworks because you want a dog and a baby?
That's on the parents not the fireworks.
If it wasn't fireworks setting The mutt off, it could easily be something else.

I bet more dogs have killed people than fireworks. More dogs have likely maimed people alone than fireworks.

and remember not all bites are reported or require medical treatment either.

Hell I bet even just posties have been bitten by dogs more than fireworks have themselves injured people.

Dogs are notoriously unpredictable but these mutters are so damn sure their dog won’t be the one that bites.

I had to ask a woman to move her dog out the aisle in the train, she wanted me to step over it. I was like erm no?!

Aside from the fact I’m dyspraxic, I was carrying luggage and could easily have lost my balance and stepped on her dog. If it got spooked by any sudden movements I made, I’m sure I would’ve been blamed for being bitten .

So I told her to remove her dog and keep it well away from me while I walked by.

If we ban everything that is an inconvenience
to some people for a mere couple of weeks you want to bet cats, dogs and all sorts of other things should be included in that banned list as well.

Absolutely. I think this is it in a nutshell.

I’d also balance this by saying we need more regulations on ownership/use of BOTH pets and fireworks. Not blanket banning - just more rules and guidance on the limits to how they can affect others including where is suitable to have them.

I would love to read that article but it’s behind paywall.

That figure is shocking though. I thought it was closer to 10K.

Here’s a bbc article on it

well mentions the figure and where they got it from.

It's not just pets who are upset. My grandfather has dementia and we found him covered in piss, terrified and hiding under his table from the bombs.

They should be banned and there's no excuse because there's silent fireworks available now.

Eh? Why have you decided that's my opinion?! Based on what exactly?!

I shared the link. I didn't comment.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of dogs anyway, and it would seem sensible to keep them away from the baby most of the time and especially when there are fireworks - but I still think fireworks should not be available for the public to buy, and should be for organised public displays (on limited dates) only.

bymyleftelbow · 03/11/2025 20:58

Leaving dogs aside, what about horses/hedgehogs/badgers and so on? How many people are killed by marauding horses?

I saw a piece on FB earlier from farmers near our village begging people to think of their young foals who were only born this year and haven’t ever heard fireworks before, and not set off fireworks near fields with livestock in. They get horrendously spooked and frightened.

This doesn’t seem to me to be in any respect unreasonable. It isn’t remotely unreasonable to expect that people think not just of themselves. Why is it a terrible hardship to attend organised displays instead of setting off random fireworks, or only do it on specific nights when it can be planned for at least? I simply cannot see why this is not possible. So much selfishness on this thread.

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 03/11/2025 20:58

I'm with you OP. Bonfire Night has been around far longer than anyone's pets. Don't have a pet if you can't deal with it.

BettysRoasties · 03/11/2025 21:01

On the note about hedgehogs. Please please don’t put your pumpkins out for wildlife to eat.

It is not good for hedgehogs at all they act as a laxative.

CantBreathe90 · 03/11/2025 21:04

Wait - "How many people are killed by marauding horses?"

Almost none, I imagine. What an odd argument.

Cornflakegirl7 · 03/11/2025 21:04

They kill, traumatise, terrify animals,(pets, horses, livestock) hedgehogs get burned alive, they terrify a lot of humans too.

Call me woke if you like (I am far from it) but I think It's 2025 and we should know better than to be flogging literal explosives to any Tom Dick and Sally for entertainment purposes.
I am very traditional in a lot of senses but other than (WELL!) organised displays, they need to go IMO.

Ai on my Google search said none.

I think anyone however setting off fireworks next to a horses field is a bloody twat however.

JohnTheRevelator · 03/11/2025 21:07

This is going to go well.

That’s my entire point. All this chat about how horrible dogs are and people getting bitten by dogs, as if that means they deserve to be frightened.

But dogs largely live in people’s homes. Livestock doesn’t. Horses and foals, or sheep, or wildlife like rabbits and so on, don’t go around biting people and annoying others. Why is it okay to frighten them, just because a few people like to exercise their right to set off bangers wherever and whenever they like? Not everyone lives in a city, you know.
