To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

If you’re not going to read all her comments then why bother wading in? You just want the excitement of seeing your name on a screen?

I literally live for it!!!

To be fair, I don’t agree with her statement. I’m allowed to disagree with that.

She can love all animals and want to protect them. She can also have double standards and I can call it out. That ok with you?

It’s pathetic and weird how a grown arsed adult seems to be so angry that some children are scared of dogs.

Chill bro.

Oh how strange! In what way did I sound angry and need to chill? Bro? Hmm I am not familiar with that particular vernacular. It is more than possible we do not hail from the same area!

I entirely agree with you: fireworks are a magic and completely altruistic thing that people have enjoyed for millennia. People have also had pets for millennia and the two have managed to coexist so I’m not sure why now some people’s nervous dogs are thought to be more important than the millions of people who love fireworks.

I don’t think you know what altruistic means- it is something with no benefit for one’s self but of benefit to others. When any cursory research will show you that fireworks are damaging to people with ptsd and trauma, can be deadly to wildlife and upsetting to pets, so how exactly does that fit?

Bundleflower · 02/11/2025 22:42

abouttogetlynched · 02/11/2025 22:37

I’m not the one complaining though.
No, just that people always seem to have something to moan about or be ‘triggered’ by.
I’m scared of spiders, but I’m not posting on FB asking everyone to remove their Halloween decorations.

You’re right, it would be really quite daft of you to ask people to refrain from spider decorations as you don’t like them.
Thats not quite the same as literally millions of animals being terrified for days on end.

Police horses are sensitised to loud noises. It’ll be possible with other animals.

I think many pets are distressed by their owners reactions, It teaches them there’s something to be scared of.

Heard a vet on the radio a few years ago saying exactly this! Pet owners think they’re being kind by making a fuss over loud noises when they should really be randomly banging saucepan lids together throughout the year

Part of the problem is moronic people setting off fireworks at 2am. Firing them at buses, people and pets. Houses catching fire because people are setting them off in gardens where bins or garden furniture catch alight and it spreads.
If they were only set off on certain set days and between certain times, people could be prepared and keep their aninmal indoor. They have been set off here for the last 2 weeks and it’s not the 5th of November yet.
I don’t think the public should be able to buy fireworks. I love watching them but they should be restricted to organised displays.

That’s right, they’re both just kind of “tough tits, get over it” situations aren’t they?

Gilgogirl · 02/11/2025 22:44

I feel sorry for the pets and I remember their fear but it doesn’t matter. It’s never going to stop.

No. They’re not.

We've had several house rabbits over the years - some of nature's twitchiest prey animals. Not one of them was in any way arsed about fireworks.

Skybluepinky · 02/11/2025 22:47

In our area it’s every night and always after 11pm and not only pet owners that moan, it just ridiculous, deals also use them to let people know where to collect from.

My rabbits are house rabbits and they aren’t bothered. Neither are my cats. They don’t even seem to notice.
My dogs are petrified though.

Well they are aren’t they, because neither are going to stop. Just have to learn to live with it.

CriticalOverthinking · 02/11/2025 22:49

Where do you all live with these dogs barking 24/7, attacking every child in sight and making life so miserable you want them dead?!

there is at least 1 dog in most houses in my immediate vicinity and I’ve heard next doors bark twice in 6 months (this week actually, at fireworks) and that’s it. My own has barked literally 4 times in her 18 months of life. Clearly some piss poor owners around if you are all living in such fear… or maybe some dramatic attention seekers.

or, and hear me out, possibly we can all have differing opinions without needing all or nothing? Animals have their place on this planet, livestock, working or pets they’ve all got a purpose and as much as right as you to exist. Equally, fireworks and any other bullshit human invention are enjoyed by some and could easily be controlled to do as little damage as possible.

bymyleftelbow · 02/11/2025 22:50

SleeplessInWherever · 02/11/2025 22:29

I think the overall point is we were all far less bothered in the 90s.

There was less “won’t someone think of the….”

There were TV ads about keeping pets indoors on bonfire night, and plenty of public information films about the dangers of fireworks, all through the 70s, 80s and 90s. I can tell you weren’t traumatised by the “if it doesn’t go off….don’t go back” films about people losing an eye!

Interestingly several types of fireworks were banned for sale for personal use in the late 90s, after several deaths related to fireworks. So I guess people were bothered enough.

It's more than possible that you're acting like a tw@t. And what a mean person you sound calling children pathetic for being scared of dogs, it has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've read on here.

Keepingthingsinteresting · 02/11/2025 22:50

NewHome2026 · 02/11/2025 21:02

It’s a good point - you could argue that fireworks is an opportunity for payback for having to listen to incessant pointless barking all the time

So it’s reasonable to terrorise an animal that doesn’t understand because you don’t like that it exists, how empathetic.

fatcat2007 · 02/11/2025 22:51

justalittlebitofrain · 02/11/2025 20:30

Right, and how do you think people can prepare animas for that?

Have some fucking empathy.

My dog trainer suggested playing fireworks noises in the run up while doing fun activities like playing. The vets suggest everything from having tv/music on to calming medication if required for these few nights a year. Fortunately we haven’t ever needed medication with our cats dogs rabbits or chickens, and a bit of tv and training does the trick.
I had horses for years kept on a variety of riding schools, livery yards, farms (so with cows) and it always went off calmly enough with leaving the radio on and plenty of hay. The odd person (very few) needed to give something from
the vet and I would have been very upset if I was them and hadn’t been able to plan for it - sure, fireworks night, weekend next to it, nye and Diwali, but random birthdays would be very stressful. Also if there was something going on close by and I was one of those people I would probably want to stay until the display was over.

PersephonePomegranate · 02/11/2025 22:51

Pollqueen · 02/11/2025 20:52

I don't know where you all live but I have had no fireworks at all. We get them on 5 Nov, a couple of organised displays and a few back garden jobs. Never, ever see them at any other time. It's bizarre 😳

Similar here.

We had some going off nearby on Diwali, a few on Halloween and I'm sure there will be some on 5th Novemver, the Friday and Saturday following and on NYE. All those are pretty much to be expected. They didn't go on for hours or very late and there aren't any in between events either.

I'm not saying this doesnt happen or cause distress, but it certainly doesn't happen everywhere and if they're only happening at times when it's to be expected, its easier to help pets settle in.

KeepDancing1 · 02/11/2025 22:52

Same for our guinea pigs! And from a wild rabbit or fox’s perspective, is a firework display really that different to a thunderstorm?

BananaramaDefence · 02/11/2025 22:52

Pricelessadvice · 02/11/2025 22:35

I’d hazard a guess that I’m far brighter than you 😂

If you mean that humans shouldn’t breed/have dogs incase they can’t cope with fireworks that already exist in society, then I could argue that humans shouldn’t breed children incase those children are scared of the dogs that already exist in society.
But of course, that would be ridiculous.

Edited

I'd hazard a guess you aren't. If you can't see the point she was making, I'd be surprised if you could see a firework if it hit you on your face!

Fitfunfab · 02/11/2025 22:53

I just try and ensure I keep my ear plugs in as I usually have them in most of the time anyway

intrepidpanda · 02/11/2025 22:54

Dogs used to be dogs. Now they are treated like children.
People talking about anxiety in dogs is ridiculous (separation / fireworks)
Is it lack of training? Buy a puppy, coochy coo over it, react to everything it demands, the complain went others aren't doing everything in their power to make your mutt happy.

DancyNancy · 02/11/2025 22:54

Kirbert2 · 02/11/2025 20:48

My DS is terrified of dogs. Can they be banned please? They are year around too, not just a certain time of year.

Or do we all have to accept that some things might scare our children/pets but it doesn't mean they should be banned?

Dogs don't affect your son within your own home. Fireworks Do affect people & pets within their own homes.
That's the difference
