To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

I'd hazard a guess you aren't. If you can't see the point she was making, I'd be surprised if you could see a firework if it hit you on your face!

Seconded. Some of these people, who talks like that?! 😂

There were TV ads about keeping pets indoors on bonfire night, and plenty of public information films about the dangers of fireworks, all through the 70s, 80s and 90s. I can tell you weren’t traumatised by the “if it doesn’t go off….don’t go back” films about people losing an eye!

Interestingly several types of fireworks were banned for sale for personal use in the late 90s, after several deaths related to fireworks. So I guess people were bothered enough.

I’ve got a fairly sizeable fear of fire so I’ve never been near a firework.

My parents did their own displays, I remember my dad setting the shed on fire. I either stayed inside or very close to the house. If we did ever go to a professional display, as a young kid I basically screamed all the way through them. Covered my ears as I got older.

Until a few years ago I had a dog, who just used to give them a disdainful face and go back to bed.

The whole country can’t be expected to not set fireworks off on their own property because I don’t particularly like them, and have an autistic 9y/o.

We can choose not to do them, and we don’t, but we can’t control the behaviour of everyone in our local area.

Dogs don't affect your son within your own home. Fireworks Do affect people & pets within their own homes.
That's the difference

Yes they do.

Just as people and pets can hear fireworks from their own home, my son can hear barking from his own home.

Lolabear38 · 02/11/2025 22:57

Yep - totally agree with you. Fireworks have been let off on or around November 5th for years and years - but since the advent of Facebook (particularly community/ town groups on there) all people want to do is be outraged and complain about them. Even if you do let people know - what can they do? The pets are still going to be scared. If I have to put up with your dog shit all over the pavements in my town year round because irresponsible pet owners cba to pick it up you can put up with this.

Really?!? My dog turned three on November the first 2024. He was a very anxious dog and medicated for it. He went to sleep forever on the 8th November 2024 as the fireworks going off as soon as it got dark at night tipped him over the edge. The vet said that he wouldn’t get over it and it was like he had a form of PTSD, his medication was at its highest. It broke my heart to make that decision but I couldn’t bear watching him so scared all the time, his quality of life was getting worse. So no, not every dog will survive you wicked person.

I’m so sorry, he looks like he was a very good boy. Ignore the unempathetic aresholes.

Well they are aren’t they, because neither are going to stop. Just have to learn to live with it.

Ok. You’re right. Wildlife is just soooo intolerant and needs to be more considerate of peoples enjoyment.

So pleased you enjoyed yourself.

Pets - many pets are terrified by the sudden explosions and only cope by being drugged.
Horses - have been driven into a flight mode, ending up on major roads. They have been badly burnt by fireworks, regularly after a firework display horses die.
Farm animals - regularly distressed by the explosions. Cows have been know to eat the debris and die.
People - Ex forces suffer from PTSD. The build up of nights after nights of sudden explosions affect their mental health.

But as long as you and your kids had a lovely evening, then fuck everyone else.

Thete is also the litter and mess created by spent fireworks.

chaosmaker · 02/11/2025 22:59

@abouttogetlynched cos you had a crappy box of standard brand fireworks (80's). 2 of them never went off, it was usually raining and you'd have about 8 fireworks that worked. You'd wave some sparklers and put them in the bucket of water when they fizzles out. Then when you were older (90's), you'd go the the organized firework display set off to music from the roof of the sports centre. Despite this being safer I remember one year that a firework came straight down into the crowd. Not sure if anyone was injured.
People didn't burn up ludicrous sums of money on fireworks and they were definitely not so LOUD.

Right, and how do you think people can prepare animas for that?

Have some fucking empathy.

The fireworks will carry on around this time of year and there is not much you can do about it! Swear all you like 😊

Moretwirlsandswirls · 02/11/2025 23:01

This did it for me last year, terrible 😢

For the record I have a cat myself… imagine feeling so entitled to ask people to not celebrate whatever, as my cat is scared! That’s the joke of the century and it’s on you

I think they should be banned for personal use to be honest, and restricted to supervised displays. Why shouldn’t you expect your autistic child or pet not to be made afraid in their own home on random nights of the year? Public municipal or supervised ticketed displays are perfectly fine things and can at least be planned around and safely carried out so nobody’s shed goes on fire.

Gosh, I’d better return that grammar school education and masters degree at once! I can’t understand the random, poorly articulated ramblings of a Mumsnet poster (who had to edit a bit on to her post when she realised it made no sense..!)

What about other festivals like Diwali? Does New Year also include Chinese New Year?

My DS is terrified of dogs. Can they be banned please? They are year around too, not just a certain time of year.

Or do we all have to accept that some things might scare our children/pets but it doesn't mean they should be banned?

I could care less about dogs being terrified tbh and I agree they terrorise many children (and adults) throughout the year thanks to feckless owners letting them run amok, but I disagree with private displays of fireworks and even think the public displays need to be put further out . Too many injuries too much potential for it to go wrong in built up areas.

I remember when I was a teen some other teens thought it was funny to throw fireworks at me. Thankfully I moved before it went off. Also read a case in Liverpool where a kid was walking past Sefton park and had his eye out with a firework that came from that display.

Because they’re not random nights of the year, it’s this bit of the year, and he’s no less bothered by them if they’re next door or in the park round the corner.

He’s frightened of motorbikes, electric cars because he doesn’t trust them, you if you’re talking too loud, he shouts at the sun and I can’t turn that off either.

If I expected everyone to not do things he was sensitive to, none of you would be able to do anything. Just one of life’s many curve balls!

Dagda · 02/11/2025 23:07

I live in Ireland where fireworks are illegal without a licence and it’s still constant fireworks from September to November.

I wouldn’t mind if it was just a few nights. It’s the every night thing that is annoying. It would be great if the UK made them illegal for personal use as well, it would make it harder for kids here to get their hands on them.

Lots of people and animals don’t like fireworks for very good reasons. Just because your family likes them doesn’t mean everyone should have to put up with it.

Yes, but lots of people also have dogs that children are terrified of, or annoy their neighbours by barking day and night. Others have noisy kids or have parties. I enjoy fireworks, even though it sends my dog bonkers with all his barking. It was my decision to have a dog and children. That doesn't mean that the rest of the world has to accommodate me. I too get fed up with people ranting online. They often try to get the moral upper hand by citing wildlife, neuro diverse, the elderly and soldiers with PTSD. It seems disingenuous when really what they wre mainly concerned about is the impact upon their own pets that they chose to have. Also I don't blame people for not warning neighbours etc in advance any more. There are so many neighbourhood WhatsApp groups where complainant's get in there early and are so strongly opinionated that it is designed to intimidate others into not having displays. There has to be some give and take here instead of just shouting people down and calling them selfish. People are just becoming more and more intolerant today.

Ncforthiscms · 02/11/2025 20:32

Fireworks should be banned, with only silent light displays allowed.
Poor animals & vulnerable people who have to put up with it.....not just 1 night for Bonfire Night but from Diwali till new years these days.

No, Julie’s Daschund can only cope with fireworks one day of the year… you know the very important date when we celebrate the foiling of someone trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605… he can’t deal with anyone using fireworks to celebrate anything more than that.

takealettermsjones · 02/11/2025 23:12

There's a really easy solution to the noise part of the debate (if not the freely available explosives bit). I'd be interested to hear a reasonable explanation as to why people continue to set off noisy fireworks in residential areas given the myriad issues people have with the noise and given the ready availability of silent/quiet fireworks.

chaosmaker · 02/11/2025 23:12

still don't know why we 'celebrate' a failure. although it is a very beautiful building.
