Disincentivising anyone to strive to earn over 45k a year is a bizarre strategy for growth i feel

You want to get into Labour's current economic record? Happy to do so.
They had 14 years to prepare for 2024 yet that seemingly wasn't enough time for them to have a) a plan or b) competent people to carry a plan out

They have a decent economic record.

5 interest rate cuts, inflation stabilised, at 3.8% no where near the 12% under the Tories...... FDI up, FTSE at record highs, 100s of billions of tech investment, Gilt yields back down.

UK PMI index up too.

£29 billion into the NHS.

They've been in just 15months, thats a heartbeat in economic terms.

Are you seriously saying Labour should have had a plan, ready to go, when they don't know the future.... hilarious.

You lot left the country in a mess, in fact, Hunt deliberately tried to screw up Labour by cutting NI, leaving Reeves to find an extra £11billion per year in lost revenue.. why did he do that?? criminal really.

The Tories left with inflation at 2.2%

I don't see the problem with people earning higher wages paying a little more in tax. Even with the increased tax they are still earning a lot more than people on lower wages.

But not necessarily getting more, when you take benefits into account.

I think there is a decent argument for everyone paying a little more, if the country needs it, which it probably does. But £45k is really not a large household income if there is only one earner. It’s actually less than 2 people on full time minimum wage would earn (and the couple on minimum wage would also have a higher after tax income)

Fuck me you are saying they shouldn't have had a plan when coming into government 🤣🤣🤣 no wonder you still blindly support them!

Their economic record is:
National debt up
Cost of servicing debt up
Unemployment up
Record number of small businesses closing
Inflation up and not budging
Negligible growth
"Black hole" is growing larger every day
3 spikes of bonds above the rate of Truss

Interest rates have only been cut in order to balance inflation, it's not a good thing on its own.

£29 billion into the NHS.

Now. Can you explain that in more detail please? As far as I have seen no such lump sum has been invested. And where some has been invested, it’s been spent on plans that were in place pre-Labour.

PS. FTSE at record highs.🤣🤣🤣 Embarrassing you’ve popped that in there as anything to do with Labour.

This social contract thing seems to be being bandied about a lot at the moment, but why should I uphold my end of the social contract (which I do to be fair) when there are millions of people not upholding theirs??

If your moral compass is not strong enough to hold up your end of the social contract because others don't, you are part of the problem.

True. And better growth early 2024.

OonaStubbs · 03/11/2025 09:58

Benefits should be reduced for sure. Someone working on NMW should be significantly better off than anyone on benefits. No-one should be "better off on benefits" in fact it shouldn't even be close.

Thanks. And if we look at the Blair years that growth under Blair was thanks to the economic policy and wisdom of Thatcher and Major.

lalalapland · 03/11/2025 09:59

Yes I am sure. It's about the value they deliver to their organisation. Not necessarily their customer base or the public

OneAmberFinch · 03/11/2025 10:00

SmudgeButt · 02/11/2025 17:01

Fine by me!!!

I retired after working hard for decades at which point my salary was £26k. As was all my colleagues. Being in a higher tax bracket has never been a possibility.

I feel lucky to have a house, sans mortgage, due to being made redundant a year before I might have retired and thus getting a large payout - tax free. I also feel incredibly lucky compare to some I've met when giving debt advice who are trying to find a way to pay all their bills on just state pension of less than £13k.

To them and to me £45k is rich.

Another day, another thread in which people with fully paid-off houses lecture people with above-median salaries but massive mortgages and other unavoidable outgoings in an environment with high inflation & cost of living, meaning they're not able to actually build any wealth using their "high" (£45k apparently) incomes...

IF YOU HAVE ASSETS, YOU ARE "THE RICH"

I don’t work so other people can have a nice time.

Ally886 · 03/11/2025 10:03

The more supposedly tax high earners are expected to pay with nothing to show for it, the more legal tax loopholes will be exploited.

That's less money going into the country. Has no one heard of the story of the 4 men in the pub?

I'm well in favour of taxing those with huge wealth slightly higher but we need to define what wealthy is. It's not 6 figures anymore

mabelsveryable · 03/11/2025 10:05

NoWordForFluffy · 03/11/2025 09:02

It wasn't 'ordinary working people' initially. It was just 'working people'. If 'ordinary' has been added, it's just another way of trying to change the meaning of words to try to show they never actually meant ALL working people.

So very "Animal Farm" then 😱

Most people don't mind paying more but not if it being wasted. Pay more just to service higher levels of debt, low productivity and failing services is madness.

There seems to be a view that everyone earning more that you should pay more in a wasteful system and be grateful that they are in a position to fund waste.

Lol again mucho hilarious! You can only have an outline, so how can you have a plan for Trumps tariffs? ....no you can't....

Only a fool thinks a plan devised 14 years ago has any relevance to 2024

I'll back Labour because i've seen what 14 years of your lot did to the UK, you wrecked it, yet still you support them... idiocy

Tories left the country in a mess, inflation went to 12% under their watch, interest rates shot up too.

Now we 've got lower rates but thats wrong too.... You're joking! Tell that to millions struggling to pay their mortgages.

Debt servicing has fallen, Sunak took the debt to 100.3% of GDP, the highest ever, its now lower.......... keep up.

AI has helped increase unemployment

Growth is better than we had under Sunak, he led us to a recession in 2022/23 and Labour have matched the growth seen pre election.

However, you'll always blame Labour, its your go too response.

Agreed. I'd first started with those on UC. Those who are healthy and can work and aren't disabled or caring for others.

If someone is too too disabled to work then the sum of PIP + UC and whatever benefits they get should be limited to allow a person to pay rent, bills, healthy food and heat their home.

Might be harsh, but no holidays etc and all that. (Though for those who are disabled I'm open to have my mind changed)

Which is exactly why I don't think any of this is incompetence, it's being done on purpose. Grind everything and everyone down.

The consequences will be profound.

Labour should understand this.

Inflation went up due a global economic crisis. We weathered a storm under Sunak and we're coming out brighter.

Not everything was perfect under the Tories but they did many good things. Especially on nature and the environment.

I mean yeah. I don't think the person should die, they should be able to have essentials and food and heating etc.

I know many people who are working class, don't earn a lot and have never been abroad

Ah this old chestnut...
Poor economy under the Tories = International reasons.
Poor economy under Labour = Bad decisions by Reeves.

Tories did nothing, nothing at all for nature and the environment, i live near a river that stinks of shit pumped into it, then having fleeced us to improve the water network, let the companies hand that money to their foreign owners, so now we have to pay again... which is of course inflationary.

UK has the lowest wildlife diversity of any European country.

Plus they wreck ancient woodland for the HS2 route, then abandoned it... fucking morons
