Disincentivising anyone to strive to earn over 45k a year is a bizarre strategy for growth i feel

45k is not a "normal" salary. It is more than 75% of the population earn. If you earn 45k you are rich. Not super-rich, not extremely wealthy, but still rich. As in, not poor.

Try being a single parent on 45K in the SE and then tell us all about rich.

So wealthy that you might still qualify for UC

Absolutely sickening to read some of the comments on this thread. What a complete and utter lack of compassion for circumstances others find themselves in through no fault of their own.

There's honestly no need to be jealous of those of us who claim various benefits which we are rightfully entitled to in order to survive if we have disabled children.

And yes £45k is huge as a salary for the average family in some parts of the UK.

Seriously considering reporting certain posts on this thread...

To us £45k is not huge at all. To us it's an recent salary to have in your 20s, but nothing spectacular.

Not rich. Just earning well and have made sensible career choices. My DH earns in the top tax bracket. I work PT and just top up family earnings so we a few extra nice things.

We aren't rich at all. We have bills to pay like everyone else. Kids to look after. We aren't living a life of luxury at all. How about stop being so jealous and get to work?

I did some research. Correct me if I'm wrong but once they reach the age of 18 you legally haha th ability to refuse to care for them. And the LA has to legally come up to a solution. You might have to contribute financially a bit, but you can have them out the house at least?

That sounds like a compassionate and cost effective option, let’s encourage more people to abandon their children and let the state mop up eh?

All I did was ask chatgpt (and I used the thinking mode) and tell it to use the internet to verify if parents are legally obligated to provide care for a their severely disabled children even after the age of adulthood.

PP and her DH would probably feel a lot happier once their disabled kids are out of the house.

What a terrible thing to say.

How the tax brackets should be IMO.

£0-23,809 (37.5 hours x NMW) = 0%
£23,909-£47,818 = 20%
£47,818-£71,727 = 40%
£71,727+ = 45%

SwimmingPoolWater · 03/11/2025 08:36

I don’t think £45k is a particularly fantastic wage these days. I’m on £47k and DH is on £61k (both Civil Service, outside of London). I’d say a good wage is each person being on £80k plus but, even then, it depends on what your outgoings are. If you bring home £6k a month and your non-negotiable outgoings before food are £5999, you’re stuffed 🤷‍♀️

twistyizzy · 03/11/2025 07:54

On the flip side then there's no need to constantly clammer for anyone who earns more than you to pay more tax! Many of the PP on here are the ones paying for your benefits. Maybe consider that?

This ^^

OonaStubbs · 03/11/2025 08:37

45k is not fantastic but it is good.

RubySquid · 03/11/2025 08:38

Plantatreetoday · 02/11/2025 23:16

If people are paying taxes
If people aren’t claiming benefits
then how they earn their money, as long as it’s legal, is just fine

Better to work full time obviously if you can but if you can live off your earnings without claiming any benefits then that’s fine
People should be expected to work to get off benefits.

Why is it better to work full time of you can live off part time earnings.?That doesn't make sense to me

OonaStubbs · 03/11/2025 08:44

Living off part time earnings is fine if you aren't claiming benefits as well.

Yes it'll be those at risk of voting Reform I should think

Which is probably a sensible political choice right? Whatever you think of Reform’s position on immigration, there can’t be anyone who thinks they’d do a good job in government.

45k is not fantastic but it is good.

It may be 'good', but it definitely doesn't make those earning it 'rich' as you claimed previously. It's not even into the higher rate tax bracket.

I agree with you here.

NameChangedToProtectTheGuilty101 · 03/11/2025 08:55

The problem is that on £45K or so,
if you’re privately renting a 3 bed terraced family home, it is now possible to only live a lifestyle similar to a family on benefits who get everything for free.

mabelsveryable · 03/11/2025 08:56

It's all getting so Orwellian with Labour.

We've gone from "All animals are equal" - not increasing taxes on "ordinary working people"

to
"but some animals are more equal than others" - "if the ordinary working people earn £45k or above they're rich and therefore less equal, so must pay more tax".

Yes and many on here have bought into it, they just need to wait until doublespeak means that they are eventually categorised as "rich" purely because they earn more than NMW.

Labour are purposely creating division and hatred between social groups so that they can keep raising taxes.

No. Let me propose that everyone pays a small amount of tax, even those on very low wages. We have a high tax free limit already compared to other countries.

It wasn't 'ordinary working people' initially. It was just 'working people'. If 'ordinary' has been added, it's just another way of trying to change the meaning of words to try to show they never actually meant ALL working people.

What a depressing thread, and what's more depressing are those who comment about how they worked hard, got into debt via university blah blah blah.

Like people under 45k don't work hard, didn't work hard enough or don't have a degree or university debt.

Nice to see prejudice is alive and well.

A quarter of the UK workforce work part time so the figures are skewed by that. I would earn more than 45k if I was to work full time. I count as earning less simply because I work less not because 45k is out of reach.

TightOnes · 03/11/2025 09:05

Sunak was right all along. Why did I think Starmer would be like the Blair years?

Taxes were relatively stable then.

What like your prejudice by saying "what's more depressing are those who comment about how they worked hard, got into debt via university blah blah blah"?
