Disincentivising anyone to strive to earn over 45k a year is a bizarre strategy for growth i feel

£45k is a pittance. It is the new £30k. You cannot run a household with kids on £45k.

Have you been job hunting recently? Loads and loads of jobs paying minimum wage yet asking for a degree and lots of experience.

45K is NOT a pittance. You can run a household with children on 45K - I have done it (lone parent).

Have I missed something? Most people I know earn over £45k

Welcome to living in the upper 30% of rich people.

Only 30% of people who are full-time workers (so this specifically excludes all part-time workers, those not working, retired etc who earn much less) earn over £47k.

As of April this year, the median pay for full-time workers (ie the 50% level) was £39,863. So, 50% of all full-time workers earn less than this amount.

[Source - Office for National Statistics: Employee earnings in the UK 2025, 23 Oct 2025]

£39,863 gives a take home pay (after tax, NI and auto-enrolled pension) of £2,573 per month

"Most people I know earn over £45k"

I have also read threads where people have commented things like "I don't know anybody who earns over £45k per year"

What about thickos like me who are not especially bright or talented? never earned that much , it is a fact of life that not all us can due to a multitude of factors, brains, talent, circumstances, health, connections. life chances, the economic climate...

Health I totally understand. Physical disabilities and/or serious mental health issues. Caring for relatives yes I understand. Economic conditions I understand (for a bit) but you can't blame the economy for absolutely everything.

At some point you can't just blame everyone else and take responsibilities. Are you telling me you've tried to upskill again nothing goes in?

In that case if you can only do physical labour, do multiple different jobs. Do Uber. Do retail. Ask for more shifts. Use apps and find temporary labour. Be a builder, gas engineer or a plumber. This only applies if you're healthy bodied and can take charge of your own future and build your own success. So I understand if you're disabled.

Up hours. People do 80 hours.

168 hours in a week. If you work 80, sleep 8 hours a day there's still 32 hours for relaxing and unwinding.

Araminta1003 · 02/11/2025 20:57

So Starmer and Reeves are no longer “working class” nor “working persons” either then? Quite a change in a year!

Well also remember that not everyone who earns lots of money, is bright. There are many (many) who were more lucky than anything else.

Perhaps there will be an exception if your father was a toolmaker, or whatever he kept going on about in the run up to the election!

Logically therefore, Starmer’s father made tools.

But, I thought that tools were meant to have utility?

Tools yes, bollards no

Our posts crossed and I completely agree with you. I earn a very decent salary of 87K but am a single parent. I still take home less per month than a dual income household of two people on 45K and they can claim child benefit and I can’t. The system is very unfair to single parents who earn well.

😂

You want people to work 80 hours a week? How about a minimum wage people can live on? Who is going to serve your coffee if everyone up skills?

Only when early careers right? Like that's an early career salary?

What are you talking about? Early careers? Do you know that a massive amount of people in this country earn 30k or less? They clean your offices, they serve your drinks, they sell you things in shops. Fuck me!

Sartre · 02/11/2025 15:55

Agreed. They’re attempting to demonise the middle class when really they should be targeting the extremely wealthy. Earning under 100k a year is not wealthy.

Earning under £200k a year is not wealthy in London

People who don’t work.

45k is apparently being used as the internal benchmark in gvmnt to keep to their "no tax increases for working persons" pledge. The directive in the treasury is to find ways to extract more tax from anyone earning above

That’s the train and tube drivers out then.

I thought a lot of people who don’t work also don’t vote

AndSoFinally · 02/11/2025 21:10

I wish they’d just add 1% to all the tax bands

At least it’d stop all this horrible in-fighting between groups over who deserves to be taxed more.

There are very few people in this country who feel well off, it’s just spats between the poor and the marginally less poor now

LalaPaloosa2024 · 02/11/2025 21:10

Plantatreetoday · 02/11/2025 19:58

Everything should be equal

For example this is a better model

Guernsey income tax is applied at a
flat rate of 20% for all resident individuals on their net income after personal allowances. However, the system is not strictly "equal" for everyone due to a system of allowances, deductions, and tax caps that can result in different effective tax liabilities depending on an individual's income level and residence status.
Key aspects of the Guernsey personal income tax system:

  • Flat Rate: The headline tax rate is a flat 20% on income after allowed deductions. There are no progressive tax bands (like in some other jurisdictions).
  • Personal Allowances: All residents are entitled to a personal allowance (e.g., £14,600 for the 2025 tax year), which means the first portion of their income is tax-free.
  • Allowance Withdrawals: For individuals with income exceeding a certain threshold (e.g., £82,500 for the 2025 tax year), these personal and other allowances are gradually reduced, meaning high-income earners pay the full 20% on a larger portion of their total income.

Of course Guernsey has more high earners attracted because of the 20% tax. So they have a higher income tax income than the U.K. therefore retaining the existing tax thresholds of £12570 until the benefits of a more equal system kick in would be beneficial in the short term

But the downside is having to live and work in Guernsey. 🫩

You're so right. Disabled children should suffer if parents can't get a really well paid job. What a blight they are on society claiming various benefits 👏 🙄

I think disabled children fair. But shouldn't your DH be trying to increase his income?
