How many loads of washing do you generate a week?

Inspired by the tumble drying thread, I’m curious.

im not talking about as a family, or your kids who do seven sports. Just you, as one person.

I generate three - two of clothes and one of bedding. Just curious how much other people are washing their stuff as apparently this is a huge amount to do in a week!

I do about 4 loads per week for 2 adults and 2 children so maybe 1.5?

Yes when they need a wash. Infrequently, general wool care. I can't afford to replace my wool jumpers every season!

Same. People don’t seem to know how infrequently good wool should or needs to be washed, as long as you’re clean and treating it well. It’s pretty shocking!

There are two adults in my house. Usually there are two loads of clothing a week, and then every couple of weeks or so I'll do our bedding and towels.

AliTheMinx · 02/11/2025 14:59

3 of us generate about 3/4 loads per week. We're not overly sporty! DH works from home most of the time, so not too many work clothes for him.

Allthings · 02/11/2025 15:00

Towels, tea towels and cleaning cloths (weekly)
bedding (weekly)
general wash (weekly)
delicates (as and when)
jeans/trousers (every other week)
throws (probably every 2-3 weeks)

So probably about 4-5 washes a week for two of us.

GingerPaste · 02/11/2025 15:01

One

Itsbritneyb1tch · 02/11/2025 15:03

Weekly -

  • 1 x towel wash (5 towels plus hand towels)
  • 2 x bedding wash (bedding for 3 singles and 1 super king so takes up two loads)
  • 3 x kids washes (3 kids)
  • 2 x clothes wash for me and DH
I try in vain to get it down.

I just couldn’t leave washing hanging around for three weeks waiting to be washed. I change the towels and all the beds weekly and wash them on the same day.

fair enough. We have a utility room and laundry just lives in there until it is ready to be done so it’s not hanging around in bedrooms etc.

dizzydizzydizzy · 02/11/2025 15:10

1 load a week for me. It used to be more when I was an athlete and training nearly every day - just had to do more frequent washes to avoid the stench from the laundry basket.

OSTMusTisNT · 02/11/2025 15:11

Probably 3 for us in a normal week. Clothes, towels, bedding etc.

DH wears a work uniform and I WFH so we don't have much workwear. Not like before Covid when I had 3 outfit changes a day with workwear, gym gear and homewear.

On rare Scottish hot sunny days, I go a bit mad with blankets and curtains though 😆.

1 load per day and several at the weekend. 2 adults, one young adult, one teen.
Those people who only do 2-3 per week how do you manage towels, underwear socks, school uniform plus all the ay to day clothes for multiple people?

I feel I'm missing something and would love to wash, dry and iron clothes less.

Only wash clothes and towels when they're dirty and have enough socks and underwear to get through the week.

mimblewimble · 02/11/2025 15:19

Just me? Probably one load of my clothes, plus one of towels/bedding.

But my own stuff is the least of my worries, I'm often running the machine multiples times a day due to child with additional needs. And tumble drying too, otherwise we literally don't have space to hang everything and the house would be even more damp and cold. Yes we have a dehumidifier. I'd really love it if I didn't have to constantly hear the noise of these machines.

WonderlandWasAllAHoax · 02/11/2025 15:23

Six, but I run my own business and have to wash stuff related to that (I work with dogs, so dog towels, coats etc.), as well as my own clothes and towels etc.

We then have dog blankets on top (another two loads, as our machine is tiny) and then DH's clothes, which is at least another two loads as he also runs a business and comes home filthy and sweaty.

When we're both off work, it's a LOT less Grin

But I still don't understand how this reduces your washing loads.
We have more than enough underwear and socks so we're not washing because we need them, we're washing because they've been used.
4 people changing socks and underwear daily plus extras pairs for sports etc adds up to a lot by the end of a week and that doesn't include clothes, uniforms, towels, bedding.
Tops, tshirts and shirts really need a wash after each wear, not so much trousers, jumpers etc.

Sorry, I have a laundry room too but still wouldn’t have it sitting there for weeks. I like to wash, dry and iron all the laundry and put it away.

bugalugs45 · 02/11/2025 16:15

Live on my own , but do my bed linen every week , plus towels , work uniform, plus lights / everyday clothes . So average at least 5 ! If something has a stain , I don’t wait in case it doesn’t come out so occasionally will run a load for 1 or 2 items 😬

You can fit bedding and towels in together?!

I wash my duvet cover and pillowcases , then sheet separately ( all kingsize ) . I have a 9kg machine too , but like them to move around freely, I hate squashing my stuff in

Fair enough if you enjoy it. I don’t so it can sit there until a full load of whites/darks/sports kit etc has accumulated and then it goes on. I get quite cross if someone puts on a partial load, it’s a waste of water to my mind.
