How many loads of washing do you generate a week?

Inspired by the tumble drying thread, I’m curious.

im not talking about as a family, or your kids who do seven sports. Just you, as one person.

I generate three - two of clothes and one of bedding. Just curious how much other people are washing their stuff as apparently this is a huge amount to do in a week!

That is insane. How many hours a week do you spend sorting, washing, folding and putting away laundry?!!

We have a disabled and incontinent child, but also my husband and other child never re-wear their clothes even if clean still! We have separate laundry baskets for dark, light and white items which helps massively so I guess a couple of hours on putting loads in and hanging up to dry and folding. Husband does the ironing, thankfully! One of the rooms is decked out with airers and a dehumidifier in the winter 🤣

WanderlustMom · 01/11/2025 22:51

I do about 3 loads a week for myself (well I guess towels also includes the rest of the families too) - but
1 load for towels
1 load for bedding
1 load for my own clothes

Oh your poor woollens. RIP.

why? Don't you wash yours?

Maybeishouldcrochet · 01/11/2025 22:52

Family of 3
5-6 loads one week, 8 the next
However 1 does 3 nights of sports
One does 4 lots of sports
The other exercises daily.... 5 lots of school uniform and 5 lots of hospital uniform ...

ReignOfError · 01/11/2025 22:52

I suppose 3: bedding and towels, 2 loads of clothes, including exercise and swimming stuff.

Omg I would love a decked out dedicated drying room 😍

And I would definitely ditch the ironing 🥴

That's only 2 a day, It doesn't take longer than 3mn to sort and load the machine, 5-ish to put the laundry to dry (I don't use a dryer), folding is at most a 10mn job in front of the tv and putting away must be 5mn? At most?

I am not the poster, but I never understand that idea that laundry is such an impossible task. People spend more time on MN than that

TheZanyZebra · 01/11/2025 22:52

why? Don't you wash yours?

Yes when they need a wash. Infrequently, general wool care. I can't afford to replace my wool jumpers every season!

PerkyCyanPoet · 01/11/2025 22:56

Live on my own and I’d say 2.5 a week is the average - my normal wash, my towels/bedding (I do them week about), and then an “adhoc” wash every other week, eg. whites, woollen, emergency clothes.

WingBingo · 01/11/2025 22:57

So varied!

3 loads a week for 4 people? I do about 12. Towels, bedding, dishcloths and tea towels all need washing, as well as clothes.

I wash mine on cold after every wear, they last very well. I found that washing them immediately, so they are not too dirty, means it's a lighter wash, cold water works perfectly and they stay like new.

Plus I don't want to wear the same jumper non-stop for a week, so by washing it I can put it away instead of having them piling on 😂

lazyarse123 · 01/11/2025 23:08

If I were on my own probably about 3 loads a fortnight. I change my bed fortnightly and just chuck towels in with whatever.
Daren't think how many I did when there were 5 of us at home.
I am one of those sad people who get pleasure from getting stuff washed and put away in one day. Ironing I do when necessary.

SharpBrickMaker · 01/11/2025 23:09

2x daily so 14 a week. Washing machine is 8kg and family of 5

mondaytosunday · 01/11/2025 23:09

Two to three max, and can get away with just one on occasion. You hear of families of four doing two loads a day which we never did when we were a family of five!

I don't have the time, space or inclination to do 12 loads a week 😆

Perhaps our clothes, towels and bedding are small (our young kids at least) and washing machine big?

We don't have the drying space for endless multiple loads a day.

Depends on week could be 1 - 3.

I don’t wash bedding every week though.

Why can't you put jumpers away before washing? I just leaves mine on the bed for a while then hang in wardrobe.

Also the comments answering for the whole family are funny given OP!

However many you do someone will find it insane/crazy/mental and/or think you either wash things 'far too often' or 'not nearly enough'. 😂

Junioh · 01/11/2025 23:16

For a family of four I think I do about a load a day. That includes 1 load of towels and 1 load of bedding per week, leaving 5 loads of ordinary clothes IE just over 1 per person.

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 01/11/2025 23:20

Generally 3 a week.

Dark wash, light/white wash, bedding/towels.

Im not hugely strict though when it comes to mixing loads, so bedding and towels can be combined with a white wash or dark wash depending on the set I’m using.

I change bedding once a week, but have more than one set to rotate.

LoopyGremlin · 01/11/2025 23:21

At least 10. Two children who swim pretty much every day and also 3 king size beds to change every week.

DoYouReally · 01/11/2025 23:23

Two. One of clothes, other for towels and bedding.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 01/11/2025 23:26

1/2 loads a day. Everything is washed after one wear except kids pj’s which last 2 nights. DC play lots of sports
