How many loads of washing do you generate a week?

Inspired by the tumble drying thread, I’m curious.

im not talking about as a family, or your kids who do seven sports. Just you, as one person.

I generate three - two of clothes and one of bedding. Just curious how much other people are washing their stuff as apparently this is a huge amount to do in a week!

1, maybe 2 dark washes
Bedding
Towels
1 coloured wash
Then every 2-3 weeks a white/lights wash

All for a single person. I do some sort of exercise daily so there's always a gym kit to wash or swimming costume, I have a part time job I wear uniform for, then normal day to day clothes, and on rare occasions, going out clothes.

Probably once a month I wash the cat beds and horsey stuff, but that will be multiple washes - 1 on empty to rinse out any detergent in the machine, 1 wash for the dirty items, an extra rinse cycle with the items still in, then an empty cycle with washing machine cleaner in.

ThatsNotAKnife · 02/11/2025 09:07

If it was just me I'd probably manage about 8 loads. Some of that is gym kit that can't hang around and has to go on a small, quick wash.

For me and two teens it's at least 14 loads a week.

gohomeroger1 · 02/11/2025 09:48

I do about 7 a week for a family of four ... once a week is whites. Sunday is swimming stuff and towels . Only change bedding once a fortnight so 1.5 washes per week.

EndorsingPRActice · 02/11/2025 09:53

If it’s just me, DH and the guinea pigs then approx 5, 2 for general clothes washing, 1 for linen (towels one week and bedding the next) and 2 for guinea pigs (cage liners and their towels). If the DC are home, quite a few more! DS created vast quantities of washing all summer - sports washes, white shirts for his waiter job, and seemingly unable to wear anything more than once before it needed washing.

childofthe607080s · 02/11/2025 09:54

One clothes and one towels and bedding I would guess

my gym kit doesn’t go smelly if it’s aired dry before going in the heap

no I don’t wash underwear separately - my bras are Molke so not delicate
I don’t separate according to colour and don’t seem to have a problem

sunlight is a bleach and I don’t wear tight clothes so I don’t need to wash trousers after one or two wears

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 02/11/2025 09:56

5 people - about 7 a week

1 load per week for 2 people

Omg how?! Theres 2 of us and we do 1 bedding load, 1 towel load and 2/3 clothing ones. Not being arsey genuinely interested

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/11/2025 10:00

Two adults here. Laundry is my job, and we tend to have:

One wash of bedding
One wash of towels
Two clothes washes
Most weeks one hand wash (mostly mine, knitwear) at this time of year, which then gets spun

Also random loads like sofa throws, the cat’s beds, dressing gowns etc on a good drying day - a few times a year.

I line dry as much as possible, all the bedding went out on Friday, but we do have and use a tumbler too.

ishimbob · 02/11/2025 10:14

I do mine separately so have a reasonably good sense.

I do one of standard clothes - my exercise stuff goes in that too

And then one of something else - towels/bedding, bras (I do these all together around once a month), knitwear (similarly - around once every few weeks, will do all my knitwear on a delicates cycle)

We have a 10 kg machine

How are people saying one?
So you not have lights/darks/whites plus towels and bedding?

DarkFruitcake · 02/11/2025 10:19

That's not a lot, OP. I do three loads a day! Family of 5.

I have never separated by colour

I don't wear white anyway and not much light coloured clothing

My towels are a light/mid grey so they can be put in with either lights or darks, no need for a separate towel wash

CloverPyramid · 02/11/2025 10:25

For me, one load of clothes and one load of bedding. My towels would go in the bedding wash if I were living alone.

Our household is the same, everyone has one load of clothes and one load of bedding. Then one separate wash for all our towels.

I’ve never separated clothes by colour, we just don’t wear anything light coloured! My son wears white polos as part of nursery uniform and I just don’t care if they’re slightly off-white. His school shirts will be red and then literally nothing except his vests will be “light”.

7*3/5 is about 4 per person per week

NameChangedForThis2025 · 02/11/2025 10:31

Me personally for clothes only: 2
Bedding: 1
Towels (all house towels)f: 1

GentleSheep · 02/11/2025 10:36

Just for me, it would be one load. There are two of us, so it works out to 2 loads. In summer, I mean in decent hot weather, I do around 4 per week as I catch up with things I don't normally wash during cold weather.

GottaBeStrong · 02/11/2025 10:36

On average, I generate around 3 washes a week but not full washes by myself.

I separate, so when you add in my child's, they become full washes:

Whites
Colours
Darks
Bedding x 2
Towels and wash cloths

Additionally as needed:
Pet bedding
Cushion covers and sofa throws/blankets

DiscoBeat · 02/11/2025 10:43

Loads! Towels twice a week, four King and double bed sets a week, five if guests, towels for 4 or 6 people, pet bedding, sportswear, school uniform, tablecloths, clothes of course! I find the bulky stuff really make for extra loads. I also run an empty wash once a week.

MaryGreenhill · 02/11/2025 10:47

As 1 person probably 3 per fortnight

Junioh · 02/11/2025 10:48

SALaw · 01/11/2025 23:36

You can fit all bedding for 4 people in a single wash?!

No, I only do each bed every three weeks, thus one load per week.

Caterina99 · 02/11/2025 11:00

Our family of 4 - one load per day approximately. And if you skip a day the washing pile seems to magically triple in size

Me on my own - I’d guess one load per week of clothes and then another load of towels/bedding etc that I’d probably alternate every other week or so - so 1.5- 2 per week!

FancyCatSlave · 02/11/2025 11:02

Kitchenbattle · 02/11/2025 10:22

I don’t understand though why you wash your clothes and towels on the same programme? Towels get a 40 or 60 cotton wash, my clothes get a much cooler and shorter 30 synthetic wash. The towel temp would damage my clothes, the cooler wash is unhygienic for towels, especially tea towels.

GiddyDog · 02/11/2025 11:02

Family of 4.
I'd say 6 loads a week of clothes then bedding and towels on top.
