How many loads of washing do you generate a week?

Inspired by the tumble drying thread, I’m curious.

im not talking about as a family, or your kids who do seven sports. Just you, as one person.

I generate three - two of clothes and one of bedding. Just curious how much other people are washing their stuff as apparently this is a huge amount to do in a week!

Probably 2-3 for clothes and bedding/towels

user1497787065 · 02/11/2025 07:55

I would think as a single person during the winter I would generate one load lights, one load darks, one bedlinen, one towels
and one woollens. So five in total.

PurpleFlower1983 · 02/11/2025 07:57

At least one a day, possibly more. Family of 4.

WolfieMuma · 02/11/2025 07:57

I have no idea how much I do for myself, but as a family of 5, I do a load every day, sometimes 2.

Kitchenbattle · 02/11/2025 07:58

Family of 4 and we have 2 loads weekly- so half a load per person. I have an 11kg washer and dryer.

Itwouldbesonice · 02/11/2025 07:59

1-2 loads max for just me.

Teen dc generates more, probably 2-3 a week including bedding.

morellamalessdrama · 02/11/2025 08:00

A load a day (family of four) and then extra loads at the weekend for sheets and towels.

SparklyGlitterballs · 02/11/2025 08:02

If I lived alone it would probably be three per week - one of clothes, one of bedding and one of towels. However I live with two adult DDs who throw stuff in the laundry after barely wearing it, so the machine is on most days.

I only ever use my tumble dryer in the winter, for things like towels or bedding. Everything else is dried on racks, or outside if the weather is ok.

MaryGreenhill · 02/11/2025 08:03

About 7 a week, adult family of 4

Fearfulsaints · 02/11/2025 08:09

For just me, 3 i guess. A light, a dark a bedding/towels.

But washing machines vary in size. Mine is 10kg. Our old one was 7.

Plus it has settings like half a load, daily, eco etc. So I dont feel the need to have it full to the brim.

How can 2 people generate this much washing? That’s ridiculous. I never did that much when I had me, husband and 2 tiny children!

Quite easily .
Its not ridiculous but thanks for your thoughts .
Your rudeness is much appreciated .

Fayrazzled · 02/11/2025 08:11

Do people do a separate wash for their tea towels and dishcloths? My mum always taught me to do that but it doesn’t seem other people are?

Zempy · 02/11/2025 08:12

Average of two a week. One person.

I only wash my bedding fortnightly, it’s just me and I barely sweat.

Then there will be dark/colour/white washes on rotation, mostly dark.

3teens2cats · 02/11/2025 08:14

4 adults living at home at the moment and I probably average at 10 ro 12 loads per week, so that's 2.5 or 3 per person. I don't think that's actually too bad when that includes bedding and towels. I do bedding and towels on rotation so everything gets done every 2-3 weeks max.
Just to add, all adults are totally capable of doing their own washing but it's far more efficient to do it as a family.

rolandsrat · 02/11/2025 08:15

3 of us and I will do

Two loads of bedding
One load of towels
One load of gym, rugby kit and underwear
Two loads of work wear/uniforms
One of after work PJs, lougewear and weekend wear

7 roughly a week.

Charlottetharlot · 02/11/2025 08:17

0.25... Once a month for one person

Iridescentdragon · 02/11/2025 08:20

Between 5 and 7 people living here depending on dcs partners, I do 8ish loads a week in a large machine. We only run it when it's full.
I have no outside drying space but a long airer at the top of the stairs, a long banister that's great for sheets or towels and a wall mounted airer. I've also got a dehumidifier. I can put a wash on in the morning and it'll usually be dry at night

FartyAnimal · 02/11/2025 08:24

I guess 3 a week for 2 of us - one is bedding and the other two are clothes and towels.

Yes absolutely .
Kitchen and bathroom/s cleaning cloths and tea towels plus bath mats and I use white flannel daily for balm cleansing. These form basis of my whites load .

Freshstartyear25 · 02/11/2025 08:35

We do a washing load per day for a family of 2 adults and 3 children. For me personally, I’ll say i generate 1.5 loads per week

There’s no need to if you use bio powder

DareMe · 02/11/2025 08:37

Just me. Maybe 1 every 10 days or so on average. I don’t do my full bedding every week, nor my towels because they simply don’t need to be washed that often. I rewear clothes (except underwear) because they don’t need to be washed after one use of a few hours.
I don’t own a tumble dryer so everything is line dried.

Poortraitorsstarbe123 · 02/11/2025 08:39

I do 3 loads a week for 1 adult, 2 teenagers. That includes the bedding/towels. So one load per person. Large drum and only do full loads.

Bufftailed · 02/11/2025 08:40

I was bedding every fortnight. Clothes 1-2 a week. I am mostly at home…

SquitMcJit · 02/11/2025 08:48

Hard to say as an individual because many people
on here don’t live on their own and so aren’t just washing for one person - although I know that is what the OP asked.

i can’t work out how people are doing so few loads (either for themselves or for multiple people). Do people not wash underwear separately from everything else on a higher temp? Delicates like bras separately from jeans? Bright coloured stuff separately from pale stuff? I wish I didn’t have so much washing all the damn time - but I can’t see how to cut it down.

I feel queasy about the poster who said they have worn jeans for a year without washing them. That is very odd for something that is worn around the crotch area and also must have sat on multiple seats all over the place by this time - eg public transport?
