How many loads of washing do you generate a week?

Inspired by the tumble drying thread, I’m curious.

im not talking about as a family, or your kids who do seven sports. Just you, as one person.

I generate three - two of clothes and one of bedding. Just curious how much other people are washing their stuff as apparently this is a huge amount to do in a week!

Me on my own if I washed everything every week and cleared the basket. Think it's a 6kg machine
sheets/duvet cover
towels/bathmat
coloureds x 2
whites
so possibly up to 5 loads?

Namechangeforbabynames · 02/11/2025 00:17

We do 8 a week as a family of 4 including a toddler and a newborn. I’d say 2-3 for me - running regularly, breastfeeding (so bras stink!) and generally change more often than my husband!

Gingernaut · 02/11/2025 00:24

Darks
Lights/whites
Synthetics/fast coloured

If there are enough colours to create another wash, then tend to group similar colours together - Reds/pinks/browns, blues and greens

Flippineck67 · 02/11/2025 00:26

For me, 2 loads on average. Occasionally 3 per week.

For DS, who is a child, but is mahoosive, about 5 loads a week. One day a week, he requires three changes of clothes: PE, uniform and swimming stuff. Then there are the two different sports clubs he does, so two more lots of kit.

In all, for a family of 4, about 10-12 loads per week (and no tumble dryer!)

Westfacing · 02/11/2025 00:33

Usually two - I live alone

This is pretty accurate for me aswell

k1233 · 02/11/2025 02:17

I do lights, darks, linen. The lights and linen may go together if I'm not doing the doona cover or blankets. Towels go in with appropriate load.

I don't have a clothes dryer (live somewhere mostly warm and sunny) and have a backlog at the moment due to two weekends of forecast rain. Ignored the forecast for today (week 3) and it's a lovely sunny 30 degrees.

Very happy mum talked me into the benefits of a 10kg machine - mainly being able to wash winter blankets. Mine are king sized, so definitely a good idea. It's utterly amazing and what would have previously been two loads is one. Great for days like today.

coxesorangepippin · 02/11/2025 02:58

Probably two

Exemptfromcontent · 02/11/2025 03:04

Maybe 4 maximum.
4 people in the house, DDS uniform is one load by itself, DH uniform for work is the same as it’s usually oily and grim, then me and DS clothes depending on how many changes he’s had at nursery, or many spillages he has. I tend to re-wear clothes a couple times so I don’t really have 7 days worth of clothes to wash.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/11/2025 05:41

There's 3 adults living here and we do about 6 x 7kg loads per week - so averaging 2 per person. I wear tops for two days mostly, jeans and trousers for longer. We each have a clean bath sheet once a week, hand towels are changed twice a week. Bedding changed fortnightly, pillowcases weekly.

NoSoupForU · 02/11/2025 05:53

I do 1 of clothes, but sometimes that's more than a weeks worth. And 1 of bedding and towels.

GehenSieweiter · 02/11/2025 05:59

SALaw · 01/11/2025 23:36

You can fit all bedding for 4 people in a single wash?!

We could fit bedding for 4 people in our washer, if it was a double set (two adults) and two singles (two kids).

GehenSieweiter · 02/11/2025 06:03

Anyway, to answer the actual question, 2 or 3 loads per week when I lived alone - clothes x 1 (pretty much everything went in together and no incidents), bedding x 1, and towels as required (let them accumulate so maybe actually once per fortnight). I didn't own a tumble drier.

Pricelessadvice · 02/11/2025 06:59

A lot! I have horses and a lot of animals, plus I run an animal related business.
At least 2 washes a day of my stuff.

Wow I need to upgrade my machine! I’ve never had one that could do that.

Ours is just a standard larger sized (9kg) drum. We actually inherited it pretty much new from a relative who passed away, prior to that we had the exact same model with a smaller (6kg I think) drum. Nothing special, just a Hotpoint.

I sometimes feel that the reason so many people on mumsnet wail that they have no free time in their life is because they spend it all doing multiple loads of washing and cleaning the bathroom 3 times a day…

I do about 3 loads a week for 2 people and we both exercise and play padel several times a week. Why on earth do you need to wash towels 3 times a week??? We have water shortages where I live so I try not to use too much water and most clothes don’t need washing that much anyway, especially woollens and jeans. I have a pair of jeans I’ve owned for a year and I’ve still never washed them!

Towels do get a damp smell quite quickly if not aired between uses, so I suspect if people are just throwing them on the floor they'll need washed quite often. There's no way I could wait a year before washing my jeans though. Boak.

Family of 4, about 5-6 loads a week all in. I do feel it’s a lot and have to check the kids aren’t chucking things into laundry that don’t need washing.

just for myself, it’d probably be 2 - one clothes load and one towels / bedding alternated.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 02/11/2025 07:49

I live alone - generally a light a dark and a bedding

Gymbunny2025 · 02/11/2025 07:51

2-3 loads a day! But that’s 4 lots of bedding washed a week. Loads of towels. Then a boy who gets very muddy. And I separate out darks/lights/whites. Shocked some people manage that in a week though!

Terrytheweasel · 02/11/2025 07:51

3 half loads 3 people

pinkspectacleframes · 02/11/2025 07:52

One a day? Me, DH and 3x Primary / nursery aged DCs.

TheatreTraveller · 02/11/2025 07:53

We do about 3 a week. Family of 4. Kids are little and their clothes are tiny. We all re-wear clothes if not dirty. We're honestly too busy to be doing laundry all week.
