Do you tip the hairdressers?

First time I went to a new place today. Paid £290 for cut and colour (short hair).

I was really pleased with the colour and cut!!

two different ladies I had, one for cut and one for colour.

I found they were sort of ‘hovering’ around me when I left, even helped me put my coat on.

aibu to have not tipped them? I feel awful 😢 I don’t usually go to the hair dressers often at all and now I’m worried I should have done? I feel now they may have been expecting it.

I tip 10%

GarlicBreadStan · 01/11/2025 18:54

I usually don't.

However, when I last went to get a haircut (my first professional one in YEARS), the hairdresser was so chilled out and really chatty (but not in a way that makes me scared or makes my social anxiety flare up) and so kind, and the haircut only cost £10 so I tipped her £10

Timeforabitofpeace · 01/11/2025 18:55

Never. She’s really expensive, and no doubt tips herself. She’s also the owner, and sets the prices.

EachandEveryone · 01/11/2025 18:55

I’ve just been and tipped £10
on a £55 cut and blow. I really like my hairdresser. They often have their own card machine now in their pockets so there’s no need to look for change. I did feel bad about the apprentice though.

BowlyLarr · 01/11/2025 18:56

Never. It’s expensive enough as it is (I’m horrified at the thought of £290 - how long will that last?)

AlwaysHopefull89 · 01/11/2025 18:57

@BowlyLarrim actually really regretting paying that price to be honest I probably won’t be back. It’s a shame

CosySeason · 01/11/2025 18:59

I have stopped as the price is increased every six months at the salon I use.

skyscrapersinging · 01/11/2025 18:59

I always tip my hairdresser in cash after a cut. Tip both when there’s cut and colour (ie stylist and colourist), usually £10 ea.

Chinsupmeloves · 01/11/2025 19:00

Me and now members of my family all go the same hairdresser's and have build up relationships with the stylists so always tip. They are good, great value, so at least 10per cent.

I used to go to a more expensive one before moving town and did tip but didn't really want ro because the cost was high enough! Xx

Pemba · 01/11/2025 19:00

That's so expensive! I assume the salon must be in Kensington or Mayfair or somewhere like that?

Pinkearedcows · 01/11/2025 19:03

Yes. 10%. I am probably a mug as she co-owns the salon, but businesses are struggling and she is very good with curly hair. I don't want to have to find another hairdresser!

Jol145 · 01/11/2025 19:04

Yes, I’ve just been and tipped £5 on a £35 trim - only there 30 minutes. I’m getting a colour in 4 weeks and they said between £95 and £115 and I’ll only be tipping £5 again. I don’t like the tip culture but it feels awkward giving nothing.

PurpleFlower1983 · 01/11/2025 19:07

I tip £5 but my hair cut and highlights is only £80.

Tequilamockinbird · 01/11/2025 19:09

£290 for a cut and colour? Shock

I have long hair and pay £90 for cut and colour! I do also tip £10.
I probably wouldn’t have tipped anything either if I’d been charged £290!

TheatricalLife · 01/11/2025 19:12

£290 is ridiculous. There is no way I'd tip on top of that.

MumChp · 01/11/2025 19:15

No. I don't tip.

But I would never pay £290 at a hairdressser.

sheistheslayer · 01/11/2025 19:21

No, he owns the salon and it is £140 for my cut
I usually bring him a coffee or a cake or something

Allseeingallknowing · 01/11/2025 19:45

PurpleFlower1983 · 01/11/2025 19:07

I tip £5 but my hair cut and highlights is only £80.

Only!!!

I don’t tip. I hate tipping through the year. Instead I look after everyone at Christmas and do everyone a little envelope with some money inside. I find it’s more appreciated at that time of year. Varies depending who it is/how often I see them or a food hamper or a nice practical gift rather than cash depending on their age. I find the older generation don’t appreciate cold hard cash and much prefer the well thought out gift or hamper. Nail lady will get £100 as I see her every 3/4 weeks. Husband and sons barber will also get £100, my hairdresser £50 as I only see her a couple times a year, facialist £100 as again I see her monthly, Botox lady will be nice bottle champagne. Gardner and his team will be £100, ironing lady will be champagne, gym staff will be a huge biscuit/tea/coffee/crates of Diet Coke hamper to share amongst themselves as there are so many of them so I’d rather spend £100 and go get some goodies for the staff room. It does end up costing a fair bit but it actually costs me less than tipping in the year and as I’ve said it’s much more appreciated this time of year.

BoarBrush · 01/11/2025 20:05

I used to chuck a tenner in the jar but now it's so expensive for about 20 minutes work? Nah! I spent £235 on me and the 3 dds hair last month.

BeaLola · 01/11/2025 20:06

I have a wet cut at local small hairdressers and costs £20 - I sometimes tip 5 and at Christmas etc I give £10-20. She does a really great cut

cramptramp · 01/11/2025 20:08

Yes I do, but I wouldn’t if a visit to the hairdressers cost that much!!

Berlinlover · 01/11/2025 20:12

Never, my hairdresser charges enough as it is.

youalright · 01/11/2025 20:13

If im paying cash i will say keep the change but if im paying card no
