Do you tip the hairdressers?

First time I went to a new place today. Paid £290 for cut and colour (short hair).

I was really pleased with the colour and cut!!

two different ladies I had, one for cut and one for colour.

I found they were sort of ‘hovering’ around me when I left, even helped me put my coat on.

aibu to have not tipped them? I feel awful 😢 I don’t usually go to the hair dressers often at all and now I’m worried I should have done? I feel now they may have been expecting it.

I don’t tip. She can charge me what she actually wants but I also always pay cash.

Luckykittycat · 01/11/2025 20:14

My cut and colour is 210 - I tip 20 quid to take it to 230 but I do feel sometimes like that’s seen as being cheap (the reaction is never anything other than ‘oh…thanks’) and it annoys me because tbh I feel 210 is a lot!

Drivingmissrangey · 01/11/2025 20:18

I don’t tip for hair, nails or any other beauty treatment in the UK. My nail lady as commented a couple of times how well paid they are at that salon so I definitely don’t feel the need to there.

Exception is I tipped at the hairdressers the other week because it was her birthday.

CocoRats · 01/11/2025 20:20

I always tip. I love my hairdresser.

SErunner · 01/11/2025 20:21

I used to but not anymore. Prices are extortionate compared to what they used to be and something has to give.

Ilovehighlandcows · 01/11/2025 20:21

No.

I really don't understand tipping culture, I need it obviously explained to me if I should tip.

Owly11 · 01/11/2025 20:22

I pay £15 for my haircut and tip £5.

Moglet4 · 01/11/2025 20:26

Never. It’s quite expensive enough! Also, £290???? For a cut and colour? Where on earth did you go?!

Menocandoone · 01/11/2025 20:26

I’ve had this argument on a thread before. Yes I always tip, no I don’t care if anyone else doesn’t, and no I clearly don’t think it’s wrong. My money, my choice.

TiredLimeUnicorn · 01/11/2025 20:26

Yes, I tip £10 but my cut and colour is £65 and I know my hairdresser doesn’t make much profit due to the cost of materials and the rent / electricity, etc. Don’t think I would if the price was over £100 though.

I don’t tip. I hate tipping through the year. Instead I look after everyone at Christmas and do everyone a little envelope with some money inside. I find it’s more appreciated at that time of year. Varies depending who it is/how often I see them or a food hamper or a nice practical gift rather than cash depending on their age. I find the older generation don’t appreciate cold hard cash and much prefer the well thought out gift or hamper. Nail lady will get £100 as I see her every 3/4 weeks. Husband and sons barber will also get £100, my hairdresser £50 as I only see her a couple times a year, facialist £100 as again I see her monthly, Botox lady will be nice bottle champagne. Gardner and his team will be £100, ironing lady will be champagne, gym staff will be a huge biscuit/tea/coffee/crates of Diet Coke hamper to share amongst themselves as there are so many of them so I’d rather spend £100 and go get some goodies for the staff room. It does end up costing a fair bit but it actually costs me less than tipping in the year and as I’ve said it’s much more appreciated this time of year.

You can't be serious!? Spending circa £1k on Christmas present for people you already pay for their services and aren't even friends or family!?

That is a lot! Are these London prices? I go to a salon that’s considered upper end in my town and a cut and colour is £100!

Allseeingallknowing · 01/11/2025 20:37

Some of these tips are crazy- ridiculous!

ImWearingPantaloons · 01/11/2025 20:42

No, not at the prices they charge!!

OhDear111 · 01/11/2025 20:54

No. They pay staff properly and I pay enough for that to happen. No one tips the TA in a school who is kind to dc or the bus driver. We just seem to choose random jobs and forget others.

I’ve been to the same hairdresser for over 25 years. They get my repeat business. As for a Christmas present of £100 for the nail salon! Words fail me.

Hiptothisjive · 01/11/2025 20:54

Yea absolutely but I also would never pay that kind of money (choice not ability) for a haircut and colour. That is obscene.

Youhidaway · 01/11/2025 21:21

Absolutely not. Tips these days are getting ridiculous. They’re doing their job and you already gave them £290!!!

KoalaKoKo · 01/11/2025 21:27

Tip £5 on a £45 cut - I go with roughly 10%.

citychick · 01/11/2025 21:40

I tip £10 on a £75 cut and blow dry on shortish hair in SW London. Cut, colour and blow dry was £200 so I now do colour myself.
Cut is great and can last me up to 3 months.

Zov · 01/11/2025 21:47

No I never tip anyone. Why should I? No-one tips me for doing MY job.

There is no need to tip ANYone in 2025. It's not been necessary since the late 1990s, when the National Minimum Wage became a thing.

I do find it hilarious though that you paid nearly £300 for a haircut, and thought they were so hard done by that they should have had a tip. 😂

NewDogOwner · 01/11/2025 21:50

I am socially awkward so find this excruciating. It is so expensive not (£250 for cut and highlights) that I can only afford once or twice a year so am not tipping now.

Allseeingallknowing · 01/11/2025 21:52

Owly11 · 01/11/2025 20:22

I pay £15 for my haircut and tip £5.

They must love you! Why on earth do you tip 33% of the price of the cut? Normal tip is 10% and quite enough!

EveryDayisFriday · 01/11/2025 21:55

I go to the hairdressers (she runs her own salon, no staff) every 3 weeks for roots colour and blow dry. My tip is regular appointments.

I don't tip my beautician, nail tech or waxer either but I am a regular customer every 3-6 wks. I think that counts for a lot IMO.

SunnyDolly · 01/11/2025 21:57

£290!!

I’ve been with the same hairdresser for a decade, I no longer tip at every appointment and instead I give a tip in a Christmas card at the end of the year and chocolates for the salon.

Dinosweetpea · 01/11/2025 21:57

I have never tipped a hairdresser. I have to save up to get my hair cut as it is so expensive now(nowhere cheaper than £65 for a cut & blow dry near me).
