Do you tip the hairdressers?

First time I went to a new place today. Paid £290 for cut and colour (short hair).

I was really pleased with the colour and cut!!

two different ladies I had, one for cut and one for colour.

I found they were sort of ‘hovering’ around me when I left, even helped me put my coat on.

aibu to have not tipped them? I feel awful 😢 I don’t usually go to the hair dressers often at all and now I’m worried I should have done? I feel now they may have been expecting it.

My hairdresser is £25 for a cut. I don't tip. When I take the daughters it's £27 for the 3 so I do give £30 so I suppose I am tipping 10%

TheHairInClaudiasEyes · 01/11/2025 21:59

I give her a £20 tip at Christmas.

CarpetKnees · 01/11/2025 22:01

My hairdresser was still charging me £10 for a cut, and I insisted on giving her £15, so, technically, you could say I did tip her, but, I don't generally tip in life.

People offer a service advertised at £X . Nobody should then expect anything other than the £X agreed, certainly not £X + 10% Hmm

But £290 !!! Shock <faints>

They must love you! Why on earth do you tip 33% of the price of the cut? Normal tip is 10% and quite enough!

Because i think my hairdresser undercharges (maybe she doesn't think she is worth more?) and i like to pay her nearer what i think she is worth. £20 for a haircut is still under half of what my previous hairdresser charged and is good value for money.

RosesAndHellebores · 01/11/2025 22:07

My hair costs £150 to £180 every 6 weeks. I tip £10 or £20 depending what noyes I have in my purse. DH's cists £50 and he always gives £10.

Gardener/cleaner get a week's money.

Restaurants, cabbies, etc, get 10-12%

staringatthesun · 01/11/2025 22:13

My hairdresser is self employed with her 'salon' in her garden. She sets her own prices, so I don't tems to tip, but I'll give her £20 in a card at Christmas and give her a box of chocolates or biscuits.

Alittlefrustrated · 01/11/2025 22:15

10 %
I do begrudge it a bit now however, as she is co-owner and they seem to have a better lifestyle than me.

Odiebay · 01/11/2025 22:21

I would if it was cheaper but his prices are high. I went for a cut and half highlights which was £210 just had balyage and cut which was £275 and said no more. Il just get a quick cut from now on. As prices have done up so much near me!

mondaytosunday · 01/11/2025 22:23

Yes. I tip 10% to the person who does it (so in your case I’d split that) especially if they’ve done a good job, and a couple quid to the girl who washes it if different. I think they expect it but I think many people don’t so don’t overly worry.

MsFogi · 01/11/2025 22:24

Nope - I never tip at the hairdresser

mondaytosunday · 01/11/2025 22:25

@AlittlefrustratedI thought if it was the owner you DON’T tip. Regular stylists have to give the owners a share but the owners don’t therefore no need to tip.

Wow, very generous - Is that for a trim?

Melancholyflower · 01/11/2025 22:32

It depends on who does my hair. I had the same hairdresser for years, who is now the general manager for all of the salons and she stopped working on the shop floor, so I got her to recommend a junior stylist who I did tip, as she was much cheaper. Now my old stylist has gone back to doing some days, so if I can get her I don’t tip, but if I can’t I’ll tip the more junior stylist.

Cut, blow dry and colour - she is v reasonable for SW London. DH has a trim. She will always fit me in at the last minute for a blow dry if necessary.

Should have said, gardener/cleaner get a week's money at Christmas.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 01/11/2025 22:47

I definitely wouldn’t tip on a £290 haircut!!

That is insanely expensive.

MagdaLenor · 01/11/2025 22:50

I don't tip. They set the prices, I pay what they charge.
It's £85 for a cut and blow dry. That's enough.

Your gardener and cleaner gets a week's money as a tip?

AlwaysHopefull89 · 02/11/2025 00:28

Thanks all!!

We are about 30 mins from London

Never. A cut and full head of colour is about £160 so think that’s plenty. Yours sounds extortionate OP.

3678194b · 02/11/2025 01:31

I round it up, but it's not 10%.

She's self employed, sets her own prices, there are no juniors washing hair etc and she's just put the prices up. Which I got a shock on actually as wasn't told about the increase from the time I'd booked it. So no, I'm not tipping a significant amount.

FoggyFriday · 02/11/2025 01:45

20% even if it's awful (and it's usually approx 300e 🤢)

hattie43 · 02/11/2025 01:54

I do tip but my hair is certainly not £290 .At that price they should be grateful to have any customers . I also hate this thing of hanging around expecting a tip . I’ve recently visited Japan and they don’t tip . It’s liberating .

BoxesBoxesEverywhere · 02/11/2025 04:08

Two hundred and ninety quid for your hair 😕🤣
No I chuffing wouldn't tip. That's insane!
Regardless of price actually I wouldn't as I just don't get tipping in the UK. It's an outdated, patronising practise. Everyone gets a minimum wage, so why are some deemed worthy of tips but not others?!
It's not like we're America that can't be arsed to pay people properly and rely on other people to top up wages.

I wouldn't tip at all. She's set the prices, you pay that.
