Do you tip the hairdressers?

First time I went to a new place today. Paid £290 for cut and colour (short hair).

I was really pleased with the colour and cut!!

two different ladies I had, one for cut and one for colour.

I found they were sort of ‘hovering’ around me when I left, even helped me put my coat on.

aibu to have not tipped them? I feel awful 😢 I don’t usually go to the hair dressers often at all and now I’m worried I should have done? I feel now they may have been expecting it.

I hate tip culture. I also find the awkwardness of them hovering so off putting.

Freysimo · 02/11/2025 06:57

I go every six weeks for cut and blow dry in hairdresser's home salon. Cost is £25 and I give her £30. I'd pay far more elsewhere. I'm in West Wales.

I get my hair cut for £15 but don't tip. I do get it cut every 3-4 weeks.

The etiquette rule is to tip stylists and colorists unless they are the shop owner.

I definitely wouldn’t tip on a £290 haircut!!

That is insanely expensive.

Not really, for highlights/lowlights, cut & style.

Why? What "etiquette" rule? It just seems silly to me, and very awkward, and completely unnecessary.

MinnieMountain · 02/11/2025 07:29

Good grief no!

The only person I ever “tip” is our cleaner at Christmas because good cleaners are hard to find.

Screwyoucolin · 02/11/2025 07:35

No I stopped tipping last year, I will give a bit extra for Xmas. I don't understand how we have got into the culture of tipping hairdressers when so many other services we don't tip for. Mine is self employed so sets her prices if she feels she needs to earn more she can up her prices.

This ⬆️.

MagdaLenor · 02/11/2025 07:37

I was reflecting about our cleaners at work, they are all migrant women who are low waged. No-one tips them, and they're not in the same league, income wise.

Movingtodarkestperu · 02/11/2025 07:37

At 290 pounds, it would be cheaper to get the train to my (much further north) town and come to my hairdresser who only charges 60 for a cut, colour, blow dry and straighten! You could then leave a tip 🤣🤣🤣
You wnbu to not leave a tip!

66babe · 02/11/2025 07:43

£290 ! I hope your hair is now gold plated and will stay in perfect position until next summer ?
I have short hair and pay £80 for cut highlights tone and finish and whilst I do not tip , I always bring drinks from posh coffee shop next door as my way of a personal thank you

zaxxon · 02/11/2025 07:56

Yes, always. A haircut is about £80 so I usually round up the 10% tip and pay £90.

Hairdressers often are not on staff. They have to pay the salon a fee to use its premises, and this can be pretty steep, depending on the ponciness of the salon. Some hairstylists might only see 50,% of what they're charging.

Unfortunately, in the gig economy, many people are low waged. I didn't think hairdressers fell into this category. If a stylist has to pay 50% of each client's payment to the salon, that sounds like a bad deal.

No such rule exists. No one tips me in my public facing role in which I earn slightly over minimum wage, so I'm not tipping hairdressers. The price advertised is the price I pay. Simple and straightforward.

GehenSieweiter · 02/11/2025 08:07

They did probably expect it, however if you paid the price asked then you've fulfilled your part of the contract. Tipping culture needs to stop, just set prices accordingly.

No, it isn't.
Tipping is outdated and unnecessary.

That's really more of a Christmas bonus? A nice thing to do and probably really appreciated. Many cleaners are paid really well, but they're still cleaning up other's mess and dirt! 😁

SpigTheFish · 02/11/2025 08:23

Yes, generally 20%. I get a cut and foils 4 times a year at a cost of around £160.

Says who?

I just wish people would set their prices accordingly. It’s just a faff and creates awkwardness.

I loved Japan where it’s considered rude there so not done at all.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/11/2025 08:55

I book and pay online (£45 for a cut and blow dry) and leave him a fiver. So assuming I’ve got at 10 or a 20, that usually means calling at the small Sainsbury’s on the way, and buying something little. Or using the cash machine first….

Or just pay the price set, rather than faff?

Zanatdy · 02/11/2025 08:58

Yes, always tip the hairdresser.

WeAllHaveWings · 02/11/2025 09:01

She own the salon, has several holidays abroad each year and drives a Land Rover. Don’t think she needs a £5 tip from me 🤣

wonderstuff · 02/11/2025 09:02

I don’t, because when I asked if I could add a tip they said only on cash and I never have cash on me. I pay £65 for a cut so feel it’s expensive enough to not worry about it.
